Some more ideas- Taitortoises, SNKittens, Segazelles, and Capcomonkeys.
The Gradius Gerbils could also star in a minigame in Konamice as well, taking out the enemies with sunflower seed shells.

You shoulda had one of them holding a fork or something, heh heh. And maybe a speech bubble for the boss, saying "Nooooo! Whyyyyy?" or something like that.

Eh, problem is gerbils really don't lend well to shmups... about the only ones that do are ones that fly... or monkeys, maybe... flinging poo
