Verts which make good horiz

Post by theevilfunkster »

Was feeling a bit lazy today and couldnt be bothered to rotate my tv for a bit of a go on Strikers 1945 on the Saturn. I couldnt put up with the yoko or wobble mode so I tried lying on my side and playing it full screen. This didnt really work either, it just felt wierd. So I was about to quit when I realised that it had a pad rotate option. Tried this and found out that Strikers 1945 makes a fucking good horizontal shooter.

So I was wondering, what vertical shmups make good horizontal shmups?

Eh, I hate that pad rotating shit, but if you're looking for other games that have it, I know Layer Section does for sure.

Thing about Strikers 1945 is that it actually looks pretty good in Original mode on the saturn, unlike other vert shooters (dodonpachi for instance) where the graphics become horribly compressed when you don't flip the screen =/

I can tell you this much, Ikaruga makes a terrible horizontal shmup, but if you want to, the pad rotation option is there.

Gunbird 2 on the DC has a pad rotation option also. Maybe you would enjoy that one since, well, most Psikyo shooters play very similar.

I think all psikyo console games (at least from the gunbird/strikers series) have the same/similar options (art gallery / plane specs are kinda different)

But seriously, playing Dodonpachi on a horizontal screen looks justhorrible, all the graphics are squished. However, the psikyo games on saturn do not suffer from this, and look clean whether they are played in arcade mode or original.

Actually I found Ikaruga very playable as a Hori, since the game design is tactical.

I find playing Verts as Horis to be very disorienting. The level designs are based around a top down perspective, and make things seem very odd when they're viewed from the side. Like the beginning of Ikaruga, I got nauseous from the thing in the background rotating. It was a total non-issue when it was top down, but it was just an awful sensation viewed from the side. And it's not as though horis can't have rotating backgrounds. Darius Gaiden's got a few. But the Ikaruga rotating was from a bizarre angle that just fucked with my head.

Hmmm... Interesting... In future 3D shooters, if a horizontal mode was allowed, it could be possible to view the ships from a side perspective as well :) That would be interesting. It would work especially well in Ikaruga, I think, because there are plenty of obstacles to crash into, which is of course one of the clichées of horizontal shooters

Gekiridian works nicely in "horizontal tate" mode. IMO.

Anyway, Psikyo game always had the best support for screen modes. They give you original 1 where the game is CHANGED so it fits the smaller screen better, wooble mode and tate, with the rotate pad option. Its just perfect.

Sonic Wings is more than that, as it gives all that AND an interlaced mode. THats all you need really.

Ok, I've tried a few more now so here's what I think,

Ikaruga is surprisingly good although I'd have to completley re-learn how to chain. Layer Section is just horrible as a horiz, doesnt work at all. And Gunbird 2 is pretty much just like Strikers 1945.

I tried playing OutZone horizontally, and I must say it is incredibly disorienting, I couldn't even recognise my player any more...
