pad hacking issue

Post by ryu »

i've recently followed this guide here to make a saturn pad work with playstation systems (though i've put all of the psx pad's buttons to use and added an external switch on the project box to compensate for the saturn pad's missing select button), and ended up with some weird problems that i really can't explain myself.

i've tested this with fate/unlimited codes and the darkstalkers collection so far, with the following results:

fate/unlimited codes menu/button settings: everything but R1, R2 and L2 works. normally I'd assume that that's just because i've poorly soldered some spots, but when i go and try the pad out in an actual match, the buttons that were working previously no longer work (though the d-pad still works just fine).

darkstalkers: everything works fine in menu. can't test R1/2, L1/2 there, but i assume that only R1 of those would work. now when i go into a match, square, triangle and R1 suddenly work. the other buttons (aside from the d-pad again) however don't. i've then switched around the button configs a bit (since i'd want HK on R1 instead of HP) and ended up with nothing but the d-pad still working in game.

i don't get what's causing this. would someone happen to have some knowledge on this stuff and have an idea what could be wrong? :?

Was it a dual shock controller that you pad hacked? I thought R2 and L2 were both analog buttons.

yeah.

i thought that might be a problem as well, but the R2 button's used in that guide like that as well. i guess there's something inside of the triggers where the signasl are digitialized.

ryu, which version of the dual shock controller are you using? What you can try doing is testing the playstation PCB by grounding the R1, R2, and L1 contact points with a wire. This verifies if there is a proper connection. If so, then do the same test for the wires connected/soldered to the playstation's contact points. Afterwards test the saturn pcb. Theoretically you can skip the second step since they are soldered directly from the saturn pcb, but the redundancy is there to check where the connection isn't being made.

I know for sure PS1/PS2 dual shock controllers have digital r2 and l2 triggers. PS3 is a different story.

it's a ps1 dualshock pcb.

thanks for the tip for checking the shoulder buttons, i'll be doing that when i open the stuff up next time. however my real problem is how depending on the ingame button configuration some buttons may either work or not. i have no idea what could be causing this. :?

All buttons on the DualShock 2 are analog, except start, select and L3/R3.

for ps1 padhacks, i like to use the original non-dualshock pads. nothing analog to worry about, small board size, great adaptor compatibility, and nice big pads to solder to.

and sorry, but i can't help you with your original problem. i ran into something similar a long time ago and just scrapped that pad. there's a bunch of dualshock revisions and some are more of a pita than others.
