It's quite impressive they managed to bring it down that much. If you happen to live in a place were electricity actually costs money (=not the USA, where energy is hardly taxed at all), the annual cost difference is noticable. At 22 EUR cents per kWh and 3h average use per day, a modern PS3 costs ~35 EUR less per year than the launch model.Ex-Cyber wrote:60W typical is plausible; I was quoting maximum ratings for both systems. From the label, the corresponding rating on my CECHA is 120V * 3.2A = 384W.Friendly wrote:Current PS3s (CECH-3000) use about 60W. Launch units (CECHA) used ~200W.

I don't think any of the PS3 revisions looked any good at all, so I think this is real.
Re: Super Slim PS3 CECH-4000 Coming Up
Really? I actually quite like the look of my slim compared to the original. The matte finish and more compressed form factor are more appealing to me than a big chassis and gloss. That said these redesign pictures make my look favourably upon the aesthetics of my FZ-10 3DO.ZellSF wrote:I don't think any of the PS3 revisions looked any good at all, so I think this is real.

Christ, that looks bad. I liked the other PS3 designs a bit. This looks like ass!
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Its probably going to cost about £150 in the shops. You get what you pay for.

And lower, i.e. 3.3V, 1.5V, etc. 5V logic in most digital applications has been replaced by 3.3V for 10+ years. Some chips are 3.3V w/ 5V compatibility, but even the 3.3V stuff is getting replaced by 1.5V in many applications. The danger with the lower voltages is more electrical noise susceptibility.shmuppyLove wrote:I would reckon like most electronics these days, components are running at either 12V or 5V DC.

If this is what the finished model looks like, no wonder Sony are short of a few billion dollars. The second revision is vastly more attractive.

Why do they keep going for the corrugated look? It's like, "yes, we know, you almost made the SNES CD-ROM drive. Nobody cares anymore!"

If this is cheap, it might be appealing. I don't have a modern system yet except for the Wii, but I'd also be hesitant to pay anything over $200 for one so close to the end of the generation. I guess you have to count for inflation and Sony being Sony, but I seem to remember that by this time in the past, you'd have $100-$150 consoles
I guess *that's* never happening again.

Keep dreaming, Sony says the PS3 is going to have a 10-year lifecycle. And I won't be surprised if the Orbis is just a Gaikai cloud streaming box that plays PS3 games.but I'd also be hesitant to pay anything over $200 for one so close to the end of the generation.
I hope this isn't another PSP Street (El Cheapo model with shoddy manufacturing quality and missing major features). If so, I hope they keep it to Europe like before. I'm perfectly happy with my late-model Slim, which already puts out a lot less heat than the 360.
Seems like it might be a top loader, can't really tell. I don't see a disc slot on the front.
Re: Super Slim PS3 CECH-4000 Coming Up
better pics are available. I don't find the design too bad. Sure, cheaper, but I don't use the PS3 for BDs anymore and I could imagine that the top loading mechanism is less prone to failure compared to the slot-in drives.

Awesome, it's top loading! Kinda wish I had waited to get a Triple.
Of course, it could have issues of its own.

^ Er, Fudoh they're mock-up CG concepts based around the leaked pics. They've been created by someone on NeoGaf, not released by Sony, so they're erroneous in terms of hardware indicators.Fudoh wrote:Mock Pictures

ups, sorry, but ok, I guess the real units to show up at the Gamecom in Cologne in august won't be much different.

This may be trivial, but I hope they release it in the US this time with multiple color options. I never really understood why the alternate colored units never left Japan, anyone know why?

I don't know what you guys are whinging about the model design. I mean, it's the PS3: Scanline Cover Edition. I thought you elitist pricks were all into that sort of crap.
If there does happen to be a new one and it looks like that I can't say I'd mind. Not sure about the cut out of Blu-Ray though. I realise that does make the bulk of the price but it's also one of their key selling points, at least where I live it is.

Hmm, ridges on top. Now all it needs is a wood grain front and big switches on top for the 2600 look.

Re: Super Slim PS3 CECH-4000 Coming Up
well, what do you know... I just got the YLOD on my 40gb fat. All of a sudden I need a serious showdown between the still-on-shelves slim and the superslim. Which one would you go for?

I've heard the materials and build quality on the super slim are shit.
Grab a 160GB slim before they're gone.

If there are knobs on it (I don't know what the hell they'd adjust), I'm buying one. The more it looks like a vintage synth or a foreman grill, the sexier it is!Jeneki wrote:Hmm, ridges on top. Now all it needs is a wood grain front and big switches on top for the 2600 look.

And here's the new PS3 controller...

Re: Super Slim PS3 CECH-4000 Coming Up
Is the YLOD really guaranteed? I have a launch 60GB PS3 that's so far been very stable. I don't often use it but when I do, I've left it on overnight several times without any problems. Everything is out in the open and off the carpet so ventilation is assured. I've been considering getting a later model PS3 for security and before the good models are gone but I haven't once experienced any issues yet.

I've also got a launch model, and for sure it's staying vertical outside of my TV stand. It does get quite warm during extended sessions, I can't imagine if it was horizontal inside a cabinet ...Ganelon wrote:Is the YLOD really guaranteed? Re: Super Slim PS3 CECH-4000 Coming Up
Replace the thermal paste if you don't want your phat PS3 to YLOD. The sooner, the better.
Re: Super Slim PS3 CECH-4000 Coming Up
Does YLOD occur in case of a broken HD? I admit I used my fat model quite heavily, playing games from HD and filling the 40gb space... Now I'm not sure if I should just replace the HD.
In other words, can an YLOD be triggered by HD break, and NOT by the overheat/thermal paste thing?
(also, need tips to try recover savefiles)

Re: Super Slim PS3 CECH-4000 Coming Up
What's the life expectancy of a slim? The main reason I want to get a super slim is because my console is almost 3 years old and I don't want a sudden YLOD to hit me.
The top loading thing is also a big plus for me, my drive is already showing problems.

Normally you just need to copy your files to a USB drive and then copy them back to the new console, but most games nowadays have locked saves. I think the only way to backup them is to use the cloud storage service, which only PS+ members have access to.Turrican wrote:(also, need tips to try recover savefiles)

And as long as your PS3 still works, you can transfer all data (including locked save files) to a new PS3 with an ethernet cable.
