Recording a video on Shmupmame v3.0b

Post by O. Van Bruce »

I've been reading This thread but it seems this only works for shmupmame 2.2.

Fraps doesn't recognize MAME. Does somebody know how to make it work? If not, which program do you recomend me to record a video? Disk space is not a problem so a non-compressed video is ok.

VirtualDub now has an AVI screen capture function. Bit complex to use but you'll get the most performance out of it.

There's also SnagIt, if you can figure out how to get any good video settings out of it.

Also, inb4 shmupmame haters hatin'.

Because it somehow manages to both suck and blow at the same time.

Tried the AVI recording of virtual dub but it's choppy all the time. I want an smooth uncompressed video file with sound of an imput file of shmupmame v3.0b...

There must be a way to do that -_-

Write out an input file, then play it back with -aviwrite

Most of you are on the level of demi programmers so someone like myself, who has only get the emulator and then played the games doesn't know how to do what you said.

Can you please elaborate it a little more?

Predictable as always, trap15.

OVB, he's referring to the command line or otherwise putting it at the end of a shortcut's Target line in its Properties page. I believe there's some text files within all MAME variant's folders that should elaborate on it a bit more.

Also, do you use MSN ever? I'm sure I added you after one of our last PM discussions but seen nothing of you online. :P

I barely use msn now, mainly because I don't "own" a computer... you can get me on Twitter though.

Well... it's now confirmed that shmupmame v.30b doesn't have the -aviwrite feature on it.

Last I tried it didn't accept ANYTHING via commandline which sucks.

As an alternative I recommend MAME Plus!. They fixed the autofire so it's got pretty much everything Shmupmame has short of the lagless stuff and it's newer.

Exploring on the options of the rom I found that you can enable Direct 3D. Once enabled, Fraps recognizes shmupmame

At least I don't have to use camtasia anymore.

Yeah, Camtasia last I checked was pretty terrible. VirtualDub's latest release (which even the one I've got is probably outdated by now) if set up correctly with the right encoder will run better with less choppiness than anything else I've ever tried. I totally swear by it now. Just don't bother with 60 FPS recordings if you want to put something on YouTube because YouTube does everything in 30 FPS anyway.

Further proof that shmupmame is awful

Another reason to hate it, lovely.

I've tried MAME Plus and it has imput lag so... no, I prefer my imput to be instant.

No wonder this place gets a bad rep.

Look, I'll give you an honest account of Shmupmame v3.0b in it's current form.

Pros:
- lagless: to be as precise as my memory allows it disables the MAME driver's sprite buffer for that game which reduces response time by one frame
- lagless Garegga, Batrider and Bakraid: I mark this as different because apparently Nimitz did something different for these drivers but contrary to his 2011 blog post he has yet to have elaborated
- no nVIDIA crash bullshit: for those using nVIDIA cards on XP machines using Direct3D on this (from my tests anyway on a PC that has the same issue) will not result in crashes unlike newer versions of MAME
- games run faster: improved performance on older machines, thanks to it's MAME 0.99 base being before the C++ conversion and MAME's recent loadtime issues
- reduced loading times: again, old base and old engine etc

Cons:
- games not necessarily run better: RayForce has driver-based ingame slowdown that wasn't originally present and has been fixed, and most of Raiden Fighter's music issues has since been fixed too
- the 0xc000000005 exception: stops anyone from using it on most Windows Vista/7 64-bit machines
- visual tear: same thing that makes games 'lagless' gives visual tear affect due to sprite/background layers no longer being in sync - some people really dislike this, it's a matter of preference
- your -aviwrite problem: not sure if MAMEUI version of that time or something Nimitz did, but will not accept -aviwrite and (from memory) all other commands

It's a matter of preference, really. People who are developers themselves like trap15 or otherwise in bed with the MAME Team pretty much hate this thing because of its issues. Folks like Kaiser and myself appreciate it for its benefits and use newer stuff when we need to. Make your own choice.

PS: if you can think of anything else Shmupmame sucks/rocks at that isn't a cuntish one-liner statement let me know and I'll add to the list.
