Monitors for shmups

Post by Fu »

Hello, I'm making my homebuild computer for video games (shmups, BF3/Crysis 2 etc) and movies. I don't know what to buy. Some people say buy an IPS like the http://www.amazon.fr/Dell-859-10143-DEL ... 452&sr=8-2 . There's also this one :
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... rs#p788159

Other monitors from my personal research :
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0062K ... B0062K9LXE
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004NB ... B004NBZ994
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004R5 ... B004R5SLJG
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005HI ... B005HIRG52

Which one is the best ?

Some sites I found about rotating monitors :
http://www.ipsmonitor.com/
http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/s-ips-lcd-list.php

A clerck at a computer store told me to buy : a TN, LCD screen. No IPS because it's for graphists. It must be full HD 16:9, LED. He advised me to buy an Asus or the Iiyama ProLite B2475HDS.

tl;dr What to buy, an Asus, the Iiyama, or a Dell http://www.amazon.fr/Dell-859-10143-DEL ... 452&sr=8-2

I believe the reason an IPS panel is preferable is that you don't get the viewing angle problems that TN panels have when you rotate them.

However, the salesperson is mostly correct - IPS panels have a wider colour gamut, and generally lower response times because of this. However these days I don't think response time is really an issue. It's not like 20 years ago when LCDs were new and still had "ghosting".

Moved to Hardware.

It is worth stating yet again that input lag and pixel response times are two different things [that illyama link seems to be purposefully confusing the two...although it is in French so what do I know :P]

Ghosting is due to pixel response speed - it's always worth checking on this, but as shmuppyLove says it's not typically an issue these days.

With TN panels you're usually getting a near negligible input speed - but a shocking viewing angle. When horizontal this won't matter too much when sitting straight in front of it, but if you move your position you will notice the shift. If you rotate the monitor your large vertical view will likely accentuate the effect. This kind of thing isn't the end of the world, but when the difference is only 10-15ms I'd go IPS.

Personally I would probably go for one of the dell monitors ending 'HM' - all seem to have good color reproduction and low input lag. Pretty sure I have used the previous model U2212H(?) before...

Otherwise perhaps a bit of research will snag you a 24" panel with low input lag, but you're options will be limited if you want a rotating stand to come with the monitor...
http://www.shavedape.com.au/jedi/images/lcdsizes.gif < for fun relax stuff, as opposed to the desk, I'd prefer the 24 size...

... The other thing is if you're in store - simply have a look - you may decide you're fine with certain TN panels...

Did you look at this thread?

Low latency is good - probably your #1 concern actually. However, this doesn't entail making too great image quality sacrifices.

Not all IPS panels are ghost free (like my Planar), but in practice I don't find it's a problem for shmups. It can be a problem in first person shooters, but I'm used to even that.

I ordered the Dell U2312HM. I'm gonna buy a capture card too. I saw the Avermedia Broadcaster HD is good, but there are more positive opinions on the Blackmagic Intensity. Which one do you recommend? I plan on streaming with it too.

completely different approach: The Avermedia is a live encoder, while the Blackmagic captures in it's own codec and you'll have to encode on your own after that. On the other hand the BM allows much easier editing of your files.

What do you advise to buy, the Avermedia or Blackmagic? I plan on having the best quality possible while streaming, recording game for future uploads is secondary.
