Bubblegum Crisis 4 (the revenge car one) - pure anime magic, the art and soundtrack are incredible, I don't know how to describe it, but there was something about it that just seemed perfect to me, It's like the Gunbuster OVA's, theres just something that seems really good in them.

This is why I have, like, zero respek for the animu being made nowadays. There isn't anything nowadays that comes anywhere near the badassery of those OAVs, except for maybe Black Lagoon (although I still hate CG and rotoscoping) 8)

And the best part of BGC is the soundtracks. I got all the soundtrack CDs of the OVA series. It's amazing stuff!

Amen. I want women to look like women and men to look like men. I prefer the animation to be done by hand, gives the animation more life to it.

yep in general from what I've seen I'm not really into newer stuff at all, I think Gurren Lagann is the 'newest' thing I've liked, and spiritually that's pretty old school. Well ok and Gundam Unicorn but I would like that probably no matter what at this stage :p

Yeah I noticed some really intensive aggressive panning on one of the later tracks during the car chase scene - the snare was panned hard left and its aggressively comped (and gated of course) reverb was completely miles over on the right - hardcore 80's production right there :p. In general the OST has some classic DX-7 (or maybe Roland D-50) basslines and lovely workstation pads and strings (possibly Korg M1 or similar)) - great stuff. Up there with War In The Pocket which for some reason a lot of people seem to hate it's OST :( .

There is definitely SO much more 'life' in hand drawn art...

it's interesting actually some guy on animelist commented the exact same thing that I was thinking when I went to update my list - he said this about the same episode:

'I dunno know... there's something about this series that its making them one of the most entertaining anime I've seen'

just beautiful

Just started watching Episode 5, there's been more art in the pre credit intro than most full episodes of other anime I've seen...

man that's it, if I and when ever have any spare money again (which won't be for a good while as I've got 4 children under the age of 5 :p) - I have to start collecting Laserdiscs of these classic OVAs...

You should start with LD releases that never made the transition to DVD and Blu-Ray, or LDs of anime that was cut, censored, and altered in later DVD and Blu-Ray releases. First things I'd get would be La Blue Girl, "End Of Summer"/Dokyusei, Twin Dolls, and pretty much all the 90s hentai that was destroyed when they were released on DVD 8)

Just got the second season of Rosario + Vampire for 24 bucks total (including shipping). It's a crappy cartoon, but the price was okay 8)

Thankfully a handful of those have been picked up by Discotek. Most recently is Mad Bull 34. Can't wait to finally see this one in Japanese! So violent

tbh I'd probably just try to get LDs of things I like (and yes that means lots of UC Gundam), but also stuff like Venus Wars and Bubblegum Crisis - is there anywhere with an accurate complete list of anime LD's?

watched Wonderful Days - emm did not really like it...

on a better note just finished Bubblegum Crisis episode 5 - more brilliance! pretty sure Eva Unit 01 is influenced by the DD or whatever it's called (also in that it kinda goes into 'berserk' mode itself).

yeah I don't know why I thought I might like it, but emm well I definitely didn't. I think maybe I was hoping there'd be loads of kicks in it and stuff cos it's Korean, but it was mainly punches, only one kick in fact, and it was a pretty shitty front-snap kick :(

Re-watching Haibane Renmei as my mom watches it for the first time.
Looks as half-amateurish as ever, but I find it even more remarkable than before. Blog-like digression ahead. The first half of May I spent unconscious/asleep/waking up slowly. When I finally stood up and walked outside, what particulary brisked me up in the bewilderment of it were various corvidae around me. Almost like a message from somewhere.
Today I saw a leucistic... jackdaw I think (not sure because of its unusual appearance), sporting seemingly fewer black feathers than this one. Birdwatching isn't much of my thing, but I pay more attention to this kind of stuff nowadays.

I'm pretty sure that Haibane Renmei remains the only professionally released anime to be based off of a doujin manga, so its poor production values can be somewhat excused.

Even still, I don't think it's that bad compared to some of Gonzo's works, which are full of terrible 3D CG objects that look pasted on to the scenery.

Riding Bean - amazing, wish there was more - I was kinda hoping that he'd be a boomer or something though as an explanation for taking a bullet straight to the head and surviving, still - who cares? - it was great :p

'manly anime' is too unmanly a term for how manly Riding Bean is... :p

seriously I really would like to thank this forum for steering me in the direction of good anime constantly, the odd time I veer off your path, I always regret it hahah

Ironically, continuous anime watching has meant I pretty much haven't played any shmups since setting forth on this neverending journey o_O

yep it really is a visual and aural feast Episode 7 :) - I think some of it's direction is an influence on Eva too (I don't think you'll like that :p).

Kaiser wrote:Watched all 26 eps of Gungrave in last 7 days. While it's loosely based on the franchise (the ps2 action games which weren't too bad but lacked in lots of regards), it's for the better as the story is great. It's a godfather-like drama, where the story is about two punks entering a mafia organisation and trying to climb their ranks up, surprisingly this show made me care about every character, because they all had a depth to them. In last 1/3 however a bit of sci-fi is being added and it's mostly about wrapping things up, the build-up to the ending is incredible, so is the ending itself. One of my favorite animes in recent time.

Pros:
- Animation
- Story and the cast
- Action scenes
- No fucking lolis
- No panty shots

Cons:
- Last 1/3 could have been written a bit better but can't complain considering that it's all about wrapping everything that was set before it.

By any means, it's a man's anime, the story will not be everyone's cup of tea as it can get really depressing.
No, no. I like depressing. Besides, if Ghegs has that dude for an avatar, it can't be bad 8)

One of my favourite series from the past 15 years was Blue Gender, which stays pretty fuckin' bleak for most of the series. The animation and chara designs were not up to scratch. Actually, the animation was choppy, the CG (if it was CG) seemed primitive, and the chara designs weren't attractive... but since I really liked the series, I just refer to these flaws as "characteristic of the show" since you cannot mistake it for anything else 8)

I've never actually seen the anime. The avatar comes from the Gungrave game which I didn't play much either, but the visual style is cool.

Then you both definitely will enjoy the Gungrave anime, as it's a mature and very depressing story all the way through with many twists on the way. Especially the second half. What I like about the Gungrave anime is that while it's modern, it's without the bullshit animu crap of today.

Probably watching like 10 series right now. Devilman Lady, Sherlock Hound, and now getting back into Creamy Mami, the Magical Angel. Studio Pierrot used to be so awesome...sigh.

Pc engine fan X mode on:

Creamy mami reached legendary status in Italy and France. In both countries, live-action tv series based off the anime were produced, with original plots. I think that the movie ranked first in cinemas for the whole year, too. Almost every boy of my generation was in love with Creamy. It was the first anime that attracted a public debate, as suddenly millions of boys were watching a girls' anime.
