Gunbird 2 - hard!

Post by Spyke »

Hi all,

Ok, I'm being a wuss. I got Gunbird 2 for DC and find that compared with Gunbird 1 on Saturn the difficulty is like crazy! Seems to have been ramped up significantly! Is this just me or do others notice a huge jump in difficulty too?

I didn't even know you could use Morrigan until I watched Rob/Xoxak's PRO Review.

I like using Marion, myself. Mainly for the homing shots.

Psikyo games are always really hard for me because the bullet patterns seem to have a lot more twitch reflexes to them (if there's a strategy for easily dodging them I'd love to know!). It was hard in Gunbird 1 (a game I LOVE), but they really ratchet things up in Gunbird 2. I can't get to the North Pole without using several credits.

The vast majority of Psikyo patterns are either fixed, aimed, or some combination of the two, and can be dodged consistently by learning how they work and developing a path. Try watching some high-level replays. Using all three of your weapons skillfully to take out enemies fast is also very important.

Yeah I've always felt the Gunbird series was seriously over looked. I too was playing the dreamcast port the other day and was so enjoying it. I also wonder how much Touhou series was influenced by it? Visually not...but cast wise maybe.

I'm seriously glad I'm not alone! I generally like Psikyo games and I like how the Gunbird series has a cutesy look and hard-as-nails action! I haven't completed Gunbird 1 yet but think I'll be much more likely to do that than GB2 for a long time. If ever...

There's a lot of learning to do avoiding all those bullets - and no way of sucking them up and turning them into points... LOL ;)

I wish the Touhou series was more influenced by Gunbird...

Gunbird 2 is actually an allegory for the search for our personal lord and savior Jesus Christ.

Try setting the difficulty low at first, then kicking it up a notch each time you 1CC the game.

Unfortunately, planned sequel Gunbird III: Are You There, God? It's Me, Valnus (and its "Black Label" variation "Are You There, Allah? It's Me, Hei-Cob") never came to pass.

Do the different characters have different-sized hitboxes? I've decided I dig Valheli... the robot guy's charge attack enough to switch from Tavia, but now have trouble making it through bullet corridors that I wouldn't really need to think about before.

[Obligatory joke about nailing Morrigan's hitbox.]

Well, you can rest assured in knowing that my dislike for Touhou goes way, way back and is not jumping on any ol' bandwagon.
Compared to about any arcade shmup I've played released in the last 20 years, I find the Touhou games really really boring (not to mention sparse and ugly!).

===
===

You know, now that I think about it (or rather, now that I'm practicing for SGTG July), the game's levels are really best completed by killing those "miniboss" enemies before they have a chance to shoot. I'm kind of embarrassed that I've never put two and two together to realize "killing enemy before they shoot = good" in the Gunbird games.

I can get to the North Pole before I lose my first credit. Not really saying much but this game is hard >.>

What's the advantage of Aine? Is it his sword? I thought his standard shot was too weak and he doesn't cover a wide enough area.

Keeping a chain going is brutally difficult. Strikers 1945 was somewhat forgiving with the timing on the gold bars' "shine." Not so here.

I'm actually not sure what constitutes a chain in GB2.

Do you have to have a little bit of delay between collecting gold coins?

(and I didn't even know there was a pattern involved in Strikers, either...)

I think you have to collect the coins in the order of the enemies you killed. Things are usually too fucking nuts on screen for me to test the theory. There may be a predetermined order or location (like the gem pots).

Grab a coin when it flashes white (you have about 7 frames to do so) to collect it at maximum value. With every coin you collect, the max value goes up and you'll build a chain, as shown by the number that appears on the top left. The value of a coin maxes out at 4000.

I think there is a max chain bonus if you can 2-all the game.

Aine is difficult to use in the later stages. His speed is great, but his shot and charge are linear. You can't play sloppily with him or you'll become overwhelmed. RNG covered the pros and cons in the HS thread.

Coin chaining is great, but the gemheads was the most stupid idea ever, almost ruins the game for me.

If you're mediocre at dodging fast bullets, like I am, I suggest treating the game like a memorizer and using Valpiro. Valpiro has disadvantages for advanced players, but the strength of his attack often helps eliminate the need for fancy dodging. For example, stage 4 is pretty straightforward with Valpiro. If you get better at the game, you'll probably want to shift to a faster character that will afford a better score.
