None of them were awful if you were the target age range. I'm still curious as to how old Pony enthusiasts are, because if they're the generation that missed all the good stuff, well, that explains a lot.

In that list, the ones that stand the test of time are:

Batman: The Animated Tales
Animaniacs
Galaxy High
Tintin
Mysterious Cities of Gold
Dragonball (not 'Z')
The Real Ghostbusters
Ducktales

But generally speaking they were all good imaginative fun.

Japanese animation studios & Tokyo Movie Shinsha were responsible for handling a certain number of episodes (sometimes specific scenes) in:

The Real Ghostbusters
Ducktales
Galaxy High
Animaniacs
Mysterious Cities of Gold
Thundercats
Transformers
COPS
Batman: The Animated Tales
Samurai Pizza Cats
Defenders of the Earth
Jace and the Wheeled Warriors
Ulysses
Wowser
Inspector Gadget
Macross & Dragonball (obviously)
Captain N
Gummi Bears
Turtles
Pole Position
Dungeons & Dragons
Centurions
Saber and The Star Sheriffs
GI Joe
Silverhawks
Galaxy Rangers
Muppet Babies
Tiny Toons

Amongst others.

Yeah there's definitely some shows in Skykid's list that i would call crap, but you know what? I don't really care. Taste is purely subjective and we'll never all agree on what is definitively good or bad. If he enjoys wathing something who are we to tell him it's wrong? It's not like him enjoying a show has any impact on our lives. Unlike my enjoyment of a show apparently has a huge impact on his life.

For the record (and if it hasn't already been made obvious enough) these are shows I grew up watching.

I don't roll out of bed these days and catch an episode of Visionaries, I'm thirty-years old.

I'd watch Ducktales again and I'd definitely buy the box set for The Mysterious Cities Of Gold. Just makes MLP look like the terd that it actually is 8)

I think most stuff on that list makes MLP look feeble. Imagination, action, heroes, villains, moral messages, TMS animation, role models, god-like theme tunes, artistry, sci-fi, fantasy, comedy, adventure.

Although I won't have the time to be watching cartoons again unless I have a kid to watch them with, I did get the Batman: Animated Tales complete boxset a couple of Christmasses ago, and it's pretty much a masterclass in animated TV shows. Its level of artistry is beyond just about anything else in the field:

I was always very middle of the road about how I felt about Batman. At the end of the day, besides the overall :| of most episodes, he's still a mass murderer because he repeatedly fails to apply a little snip-snap to the Joker's neck. Then again, Invincible makes all mainstream superheroes look like shit.

So let's watch some short clips of cartoons.

There's the dark alternative opening to duck tales.

There's the super high quality long version of the theme. Let's not fool ourselves, theme songs were the best part of these shows. Even modern day ponies.

There's the trailer for the first Berserk movie. Up to movie #2; soon they'll get to a point that Berserk Abridged didn't cover. Which I'll like more than Final Fantasy 8.

Like most things, being drunk enhances the experience.

Galaxy Rangers definitely was, GI Joe was transmitted as Action Force, Silverhawks I saw on Yorkshire TV and Saber I might have seen in the US but I think we had it on a random VHS tape iirc.

Skykid, I know its a small thing, but thanks for giving a shout out to Mysterious Cities of Gold (twice); that was an awesome series.

If somehow this became a random series about cartoons for kids, I wouldn't mind. Again, the Avatar series is for kids and is one of the best damn things I've seen in years.

MCOG is actually quite amazing. I caught the pilot a few months ago while visiting my bro in London and he recommended we see if it holds up, and it does, better than I would have thought. The quality of animation is so high, it's on the level with some of the more major Anime movies. That series was exactly the type of thing that broadened my imagination when I was a kid.

Great list of shows, period. Some of the Disney stuff was very good around that time - the only time they were a little experimental with their properties. Duck Tales is amazing, hell even Tail Spin was very good.
Stuff like Silver Hawks tried to go back to the gritty preteen shows of the early '80s, like Thundarr, Crystar Warriors, and Inhumaniods.
Pizza Cats! There's something truly awesome about a princess that releases cluster bombs when upset.
Sure, we are always going to look apon this stuff from our youth fondly, and have personal favorites, but there was a certain element that is missing from most of today's series. A lot of it seems so unique even when you look at them now. Even with the toy tie ins - like that show for the hologram knights, whatever it was called - made to sell toys, but bat shit entertaining to a 12 year old.

There's a full series release due on DVD this fall. I can't wait for it. Been watching web rips of VHS recordings lately and the show is even better than I remembered. So many jokes I'd have never gotten as a kid.

Visionaires? I heard that got panned and canned.

Something I wondered about Silverhawks was how with all the crap they had in their base (It's a FREAKING ASTEROID!) they could seldom ever slap a pair of cuffs on Mon-Star's minions. What? It's the 23rd Century and no one knows of arrest warrants? I know it's a kid's show, but sheesh. I wonder how they ever justified their budget given they were government-sanctioned LEOs. At least the 1-shot villains did get put behind bars sometimes.

Also, F*** Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors. Never went anywhere, seldom accomplished anything, and F*** HIS DAD FOR MAKING THE F***ING ROOT SO HARD TO FIND. Fleeing from the Monster Minds? Bastard was probably trying to avoid Jayce so as not to pay back-owed child support.

Damn, looks like I missed the topic asplode while I was away for a weekend.

I actually went to Bronycon (had an old friend that lived 6 miles from the convention center, so I stayed with him), met up with some other people I'd talked to from other forums, had a great time. I arrived the second day about an hour after that fire broke out, people were crowded into just about any open space that wasn't a road in front of the convention center while the fire crews sorted everything out. But everything was pretty orderly. Overall, the people were great, the panels were fun to attend, and it was just a genuinely fun time all around. Especially the huge dance/rave the first night, ended up staying for that whole thing and leaving the convention center at 2AM when the music was done. Didn't pick up much in the way of swag, except for some neat looking art prints and a nice poster:

Image

Spent the rest of my time off that weekend strolling about NYC with my friend, stopped at the Nintendo World store, which was awesome, and the standard NYC landmarks (Freedom Tower construction site, Times Square, Empire State Building, etc).

All in all, it was quite truthfully one of the best weekends I've had in quite some time, and I would gladly repeat it if I could. Life in the midwest US is so boring :(

Also, I took my 3DS with Streetpass tagging on to the convention, ended up getting tags from people in 28 US States (up from 2 I had previously), 5 Canadian provinces, and even 1 from the UK. Needless to say, I upped my Streetpass Mii population quite a bit

That's what made me feel the worst about missing it. Watched the live stream of the event and it looked like a hell of a good time, especially with De Lancie surprising Tombstone and Eurobeat. I had planned to make it out to the convention, but had to cancel my plans when my shitty company decided they weren't paying the annual bonus. No extra $6000 in June meant no travel to New York.

Damn, that sucks, would've been awesome to see you there as well. Yeah, that whole night was amazing. There were also a huge crowd of people dancing to the music played from the semi in front of the convention center before they had everything ready inside. Even got a few people watching us all from their hotel windows to dance along

I highly suggest you check it out. I've only seen the first episode, but it was really fun.

I really like Adventure Time. It's a classic that's better than any of the cartoons I watched when I was a kid.

Let's all hope he goes away, again.

Music in Adventure Time is too good. I find myself watching more Cartoon Network than anything anymore (the half hour of TV I watch a week). Science, Discovery, and Nat. Geo. have all been going to shit in the last couple years.

I had no idea that was even a thing. May consider going if I can get time off and depending on what they get organized. Was looking at Canterlot Gardens as a possibility as well (mostly because the Fighting is Magic crew'll be there).

If you're planning on driving there, let me know regardless of my own attendance, cause I literally live like 20 miles off of the main highway you would need to take in Missouri to get there.

I've been thinking about Canterlot Gardens as well as it's not a huge drive for me. Only 6-7 hours.
