Wish I had enough money to go to this concert: http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2012/0 ... our-dates/

When I see the phrase "slicing up eyeballs" I IMMEDIATELY think of the Pixies.

I had to click the link to be sure that I didn't miss some detail - maybe the Pixies touring again or some shit.

NOTE: happy to see people listening to Hawkwind. They're awesome.
ANOTHER NOTE: Hawkwind's bassist for that album was Lemmy Kilmeister, who would leave to form Motorhead.

I was a part time fan of Olivia Tremor Control but I'm liking this stuff as a whole. Has a nice, dreamy feel to it.
Nice! :D I'm an OTC fanatic. Still waiting for the s/t CS album to be released on vinyl...

You should check out Inside Views if you haven't already. Really cool reanimation of the self titled album.

New Last Step. Trying so hard to be AFX, but this time it actually works.

Saw SunnO))) live last night. Pretty intense. Less like a gig and more like being trapped on a fairground ride for 90 minutes. Felt like I was being throttled at times. No gig will ever be loud enough again...

Also good to see Nurse With Wound supporting. Good old eccentric British noise. Fun gig all around.

Pearl Jam, lots and lots of Pearl Jam, getting myself hyped to go see them next Wed, it's been eleven fucking years.

Still think Vitalogy is their overall but Vs is a strong rocker, No Code is a likeable oddball, and BackSpacer is just fucking good fun.

About Tori Amos, it was 'Liquid Diamonds' that sold me. It was on a cd my girlfriend had in her stereo when I borrowed her car some weeks ago and I was blown away by all the multiple layers in the music + her vocals. I had to ask who it was when I got back home, which is crazy because she's pretty famous. I just never knew she was that good. I've been listening to alot of her stuff on Spotify since then.

Susan Christie - Yesterday, Where's My Mind?
Susan Christie - Paint A Lady

I discovered this album about a year ago and it's never left my list. Really good stuff from the late 60's/early 70's. It's very chill and very trippy, but also has sort of an underlying scariness. It's pretty powerful sometimes really.

Going through the Can Lost Tapes box right now. Clearly an essential purchase for fans, but like the Henry Cow box, this is certainly a secondary purchase to owning the albums. I need to go through the set a couple more times, but my favorite cuts sound very similar to previously released tracks. Also, there is was once again some tension between Irmin and family to release more or less. Irmin always argues for less, and given how puffy the third disc is, I'm starting to think a two disc collection might have been a bit tighter. The good news here is that virtually the vast majority of the material dates from Can's prime--11 of the tracks are from the 60's. Only 8 tracks are from later than 73, and these are almost all on the last disc.

So far, my only really negative comment is the packaging. Coming in a 10" collectible box, the actual storage of the CDs is poor and should probably be replaced immediately as they fall out and roll around inside the box. I am also tired of the necessity of a physical artifact when this is only 3 discs long. The book however is fairly nice. With so much space though, why not include a 4th disc of additional live material? (the bonus disc that was included in the Tago Mago anniversary box actually belongs here.) There's also the question of the Prehistoric Future album, but that may be one best left forgotten?

St. Vincent - Actor

Dear God, yes. It's a much stronger album overall than Strange Mercy. I can't wait to hear her debut album for the first time, though I'm holding off on doing so until I have some shit straitened out, kinda as an award to myself.

On the subject of Can, I need to do some more exploration. I have Tago Mago, Soundtracks and the Anthology 2cd edits. Mother Sky is probably my favourite track, almost trance inducing. Anything along similar lines to that? I love the sustained tension and build of the track.

I have been listening to:
Neil Young - Americana
of Montreal - Paralytic Stalks
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom, End of an Ear, Matching Mole, Little Red Record, Nothing Can Stop Us
Duke Ellington - Masterpieces
Decemberists - Picaresque
Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium and Goliath

Strongly recommend completing your collection up through 73 (Delay, Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days.) Among some of the best music ever recorded. Ultimately I think Can is a bit on there own, and though it is easy to hear their influence, it is really hard to hear their equal. I don't know what's on the anthology, but there's no bad track on those albums making the idea of a 'best of' really stupid.

Going through the bonus disc on the Tago Mago Anniversary edition right now--not essential, but it is great to hear Can live from this period.

Returning to your question, it might be easy to recommend other krautrock (superficially Neu), but this misses the mark so badly. Can at its best has both this trance/hypnotic element, but very minimalistic melody and noisy/grungy production. The connection to Stockhausen is there at least through Ege Bamyasi and the sound is unapologetic and raw. I end up drawing bizarre connections with things like the first album by Suicide (Red Star), or other early punk/noise/industrial, but Can is really alone. Have you're heard Faust's Munich and Elsewhere? Not like Can either, but a driving pulse, primitive electronics and surreal atmosphere. If you find another band that is satisfying in the same way, let me know--that's why I plunked down the $30 for this box set without even thinking about it.
I have been listening to:

Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom, End of an Ear, Matching Mole, Little Red Record, Nothing Can Stop Us
I feel like Rock Bottom and the first Matching Mole are by far his best releases. I have a few others but never listen to them.

MudHoney lately. I know Superfuzz Bigmuff is largely considered their career-defining record, but I actually prefer Piece Of Cake and My Brother The Cow. The groove on MBTC in particular is so fucking ramshackle, it sounds like every song is about to collapse in on itself.

Thanks cmoon. The anthology is really interesting as it contains new edits of a lot of things as done by the band. It was also released before the remastered and had far better sound than the old CDs.

As for Robert Wyatt you need soft machine 1 & 2, comicopera, dondestand for a start. I love the man's music. I have come to view him almost as a friend. I listen to him every week.

Oh, I have those. I just don't listen to them anymore. I don't find myself coming back to Wyatt all the time like you, so when I do return to his music, I basically stick with Rock Bottom and s/t Matching Mole. I suppose I should go back and check them out. Recently was listening to the 3rd Soft Machine which is weird for both being amazing and rather dull at the same time.
