I'm interested in importing some PS2 SHMUPS, but I'd rather not shell out for a JP PS2. Are there any swap discs that don't require you to jimmy the CD tray open?
I'm kinda looking for something where you pop in the swap disc, it boots up, prompts you to pop in the game disc and sway you go.
does such an animal exist?
Best PS2 Swap Disc?
Well, I can only speak for the non-slim PS2's so ignore the following if you own a slim:
You can opt for a fliptop, which requires you to replace the top cover of your PS2 but which will only involve swaps after the initial install rather than the annoyance and potential dangers of using slide cards.
The only PS2 swap disc is Swap Magic. All no-name brands that I've seen are bootlegs of Swap Magic. You can't just put in a disc, eject, and put in another disc because the PS2 rechecks for region and piracy upon each eject. That's why the slide card, which circumvents ejection by pulling the emergency eject, and fliptop, which has you replacing the discs from above, work. You can't avoid that unless you have the console modded.

Swapping out for the flip top sounds like the way to go.
When you swap out using the flip-top method, I assume the disc in not spinning anymore, so no chance of FUBARing the mechanism (ala Saturn swap trick)?
What would be different if I picked up a Slim Line PS2?
Does the swap disc just override region coding, or does it also enable playing of backup discs?

The slimline PS2 also have a fliptop lid. This is what I just ordered:

Swap Magic stops completely before it prompts you to replace the disc with your own so there's no worries there. Just be sure not to open the fliptop during play or else your disc might fly out.
The swap discs override region and piracy protection. Swap Magic 3.3 and 3.6 can support pretty much any game except large dual-layered DVD9 games (GT4, Xenosaga, MGS2 Substance, and that Sakura Taisen adventure game).
