Re: Best Arcade-Only Shmups?
I know everyone around loves Batrider, but may I recommend these old shooter gems which never got a port(as far as I know):
Exed Exes(Capcom, 1985-released in the US as Savage Bees)- a great early vertical shmup with a nice buggy theme and some fine two player co-op.
Stinger(Sebu Denshi, 1983) Ooooh man...the "Twisted One" was totally right about this one- Intense action from the moment you plunk down a quarter. Imaginitive enemy designs, cool pseudo 3D art style, wicked patterns, unique "ledge raids", eye pleasing colors, and one hell of a loop boss. Add an monsterously catchy synth melody to all that....and you'll be sucked in for hours...Trust me, I've wasted plenty of em on this one- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0BsPqLupDI

If I had the money, I'd get Ibara. The PS2 port is supposed to be ass, and it's Yagawa-CAVE. Note that I haven't actually played it. But I desperately want to, and I'd most certainly buy it on faith and the gameplay footage I've seen. (This of course means I'm already a fan of Batrider and Bakraid, which have already been mentioned, as well as MMP&PS for the 360).

I hear Ibara/Kuro runs well enough in MAME if you have a good enough rig.

I'm still a big fan of Cyvern. I always liked that style of medal chaining, and it has badass mecha-wyvern things spewing breath weapons everywhere.

Battle Garegga has a port for the Sega Saturn in Japan. But the sequel Battle Bakraid is a great game that's Arcade-only.kingka wrote:garegga

Speaking of Battle Garegga, does anyone here know how to play as the hidden characters from Mahou Daisakusen/Sorcer Striker?ReSe2k wrote:Battle Garegga has a port for the Sega Saturn in Japan. But the sequel Battle Bakraid is a great game that's Arcade-only.kingka wrote:garegga
I tried inserting a coin at the title screen, then pressing Up (x2), Down(x2), Left, Right, Left, Right, Button 1, Button 2, Button 3, then Start, and it doesn't work in Mame.
Is that code correct or is it another combination?

Re: Best Arcade-Only Shmups?
I think you have to input the code quickly. You also won't get any confirmation beforehand like in Batrider.

Let's see what hasn't been mentioned yet
Thunder Dragon II, P47 Aces, Viper Phase 1, Scramble Spirits, Zing Zing Zip, US AAF Mustang, Twin Hawk, Ryu Jin, Final Star Force, and Storm Blade are a few I've thoroughly enjoyed

Thundercross 2. Shits on Gradius from a massive height and it's a mystery to me why this didn't take off. Certainly seemed a lot more prevalent in UK arcades back in the day.

I guess it depends on if you're only counting games which had perfect ports, but very few actually were perfect... Also some games ended up with nearly incomparable ports on 8-bit computers

Raiga - Strato Fighter wasn't ported was it, aside being part of some emulation compilations much later.

My bad, I didn't realize Fire Mustang was a port of UPL's US AAF Mustang as I've never played it. I second Thunder Cross II, and highly recommend the original as well which I enjoyed more honestly.

Semicom's "Wyvern Wings: Space Opera" PCB circa 2001 for the Korean arcades never got a proper home console release either. Quite easy to see how it borrows some of the usual Psikyo flavored sprites and bullets from the likes of Strikers 1999/Strikers 1945 III and it's ilk to call as it's own. Is regarded as a Strikers wanna-be clone or rip-off if you will...still impressive ending FMV clips when the staff ending credits scroll on by.

Oh man, I forgot about this game. Definitely pretty fun from what I remember [played it tons at Movietowne in Trinidad], and IIRC MAME doesn't emulate properly. Also, cheesy MIDI metal music.

It's literally MIDIs of Metallica. Also, cheesy MIDI metal music.
Wyvern Wings is imperfect but playable in MAME. A nice bang-up job for some no-name Korean guys, but it's nothing more than a broken Strikers knockoff.
