Interesting Darius Gaiden/G Darius observation

Post by Skyknight »

I remember hearing that the way to get control of the Captains in Darius Gaiden was to find a little orb on its surface, then open fire on that. Destroyed orb=converted Captain.

Well, in G Darius, in order to get a Captain, one must first Do Something about the solidnite hull, then send a capture ball after it. And the effects on the Captain's appearance?

1. Greyed out (like any other captive).
2. There's a little orb on its surface.

In other words, the Gaiden Captains apparently got on the wrong end of Belser's capture balls, and your gaining their support actually consists of you undoing their enslavement, and their happily joining you in order to get vengeance for their enslavement. At least until the boss appears...

It does make me wonder if my hypothesis of Sameluck and Lutia actually making peace with (at least some of) the Thiima has more bearing than I thought. G's Omicron ending ("Birth of the Belser Army") implies that Belser and Amnelia are connected (if that vessel wasn't the Angel Guard that brought Our Heroes to Darius...), so he wouldn't have a problem getting capture ball technology. And if during the events of Gaiden, he had to hijack Thiima with those things, then there must be some free Thiima even then.

And if they were still hostile to the Amnelians, then anybody from there trying to settle on Darius--in very close proximity to their main locations, the moon Kazumn (i.e. zones Mu and Xi) and the Genesis space--would have to be suicidal.

I can see Belser breeding his own Thiima (after researching matters on any other worlds the ancients settled--probably Mabaher [G, st. 4], at least), and then, during the Exodus War (and anything that might have occurred beforehand), fattening the ranks by enslaving Thiima that would otherwise be defending Kazumn and Genesis...

Let the record show, by the way, that IF Taito ever had the "enslaved" idea in mind, it probably wasn't until G's production (they probably didn't even have the term "Thiima" then).

Yes! I love it when people actually care about the story! I should start up my own R-Type or Gradius thread like this :)

Interessting, although I have yet to try G Darius (more than the dodgy MAME emulation). Listening to the Darius Gaiden soundtrack right now, btw. :)

Oooh, please do! I don't know enough about the Darius series to comment on this, as I've only played G-Darius and a teensy bit of Darius Twin. But I'd love to hear some thoughts on the Gradius storyline, and R-Type as well (though I've yet to play the first two R-Type games :/ ).

They run very well in MAME, sir. Go to it! You owe it to yourself.

I'm dying to, believe me. There's a ton of shooters I've heard about here that I haven't played yet. But I don't have a computer; I do all my internetting through my work computer. :/

Soon.

Hey, if you don't mind losing out a bit graphically then you should try to pick up R-Type DX on the GBC. You can find it easy in those GB displays they keep in EB (not that i like EB or anything... snicker). It contains extremly well done conversions of the original two R-Types and the graphics are actually very killer for a gameboy game.

Or just play the arcade perfect ports on the psx...

R-Type DX isn't bad for a Gameboy translation, but compared to the arcade versions it's fairly lacking. Graphics aren't even close to arcade, your ship is too big, and I recall some hit detection issues with some of the bosses. PSX R-Types is the way to go.

I had no idea that DX cart had R-Type II on it as well. I just saw it for $7 a few weeks back, too.

I've been keeping an eye out for R-Types for several months now. I bought it on ebay back in May, but I received the case with a Delta disc inside...sorta useless when I've already got Delta.

The emulation of G-Darius on MAME is quite good. Only the music is missing.

R-Type II is horrible on R-Type DX. Half of the levels are missing and the hit detection is horrible. It's so bad that I'd play the SNES version, Super R-Type over it anyday. The origional R-Type is still solid though.

Actually, both these games were released seperately back in the days of the old GB. They just put both together on one cart, added color, and dubbed it DX.

Thus rendering it unplayable. ;)
