About SDOJs use of dubsteps beats in that bossfight in the trailer, its possible that they are using it just in intro or bridge sections of the music, kinda like the overly distorted guitars in DFK. I quite enjoyed the non dubstep beats in that trailer so im hoping thats the case

I think the boss music format in SDOJ is almost precisely like the boss theme in Deathsmiles and a few others.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:About SDOJs use of dubsteps beats in that bossfight in the trailer, its possible that they are using it just in intro or bridge sections of the music, kinda like the overly distorted guitars in DFK. Namiki has done it like that for most of the boss tracks he's made in the last several years. Muchi Muchi Pork's was a bit different though. It's the same tune with alterations to the pitch after certain segments. I'd say the entire SDOJ boss track is leaning towards that spectrum of music but that particular part's about as 'bad' as it gets. Personally I quite like the track, but the rest of the stage music doesn't strike me as very memorable.

Yeah thats the part I was refering to, ive just listened to a replay and the boss music is my favorite track. The other tracks dont sound as good imo, although the bad sound quality doesnt help with this type of music.Segment #1
The main reason I watched a full replay was just to see if the words "master" were used in the actual game. I die a little inside everytime I hear it spoken in the trailer
Anyone else getting a Zillion Beats vibe from watching replays?

I was asking myself recently how did Namiki even got the inspiration for Mushihime-sama soundtrack. I mean, it's so unique and fits the game so well that I cannot even imagine how he mixed all of the sounds and instrument in such a great way.
Do any of you know where he got the inspiration for that soundtrack?

Shinji Hosoe's Drangon Spirit was Namiki main inspiration.
Now that Ge-On-Dan no longer exist (they were the reason why shmups soundtracks have been in the spotlight las year), and Cave is closing the online shop, i think this is going to be a hard year for all the shmup music fans.

The last shmup OST that really rocked my ears was Eschatos. Aside from the late Ryu Umemoto, everything else from the past five years or so has been painful, over-produced techno/trance/electropop garbage.
I blame ZUN and Hatsune Miku, a bad composer and a fake singer, for making this crap sound acceptable.

electropop garbage?
Give one example of that on a shmup? on a Shmup, not on a Touhou arranged CD.
You should hear Bullet Soul's OST

Pink Sweets.
I remember hearing years ago that the total number of Touhou-related albums had passed the 1000 mark. Dare I ask what it's at now?
I have. It sucks, but I'll admit it doesn't fall into those categories I listed. One of the tracks shamelessly rips off the DDP boss theme. You should hear Bullet Soul's OST

I though you were talking about songs with lyrics on a game, but i think Pinksweets' OST perfectly fits the game.
If you don't like that kind of music you should hear things like:
Under Defeat HD "NEW ORDER" Soundtrack
BROKEN THUNDER
Raiden IV original sound track -Ultimate of Raiden-
I think 99% of Touhou Related CDs suck, but Factory Noise & AG (Thunder Force) have produced some of the best Touhou Arrange album on earth, with Ryu Umemoto included.

I wouldn't call ZUN's music techno/trance/electropop but he has certainly lost a lot of the talent he had as a composer. most of his music has become as generic as every other and even worse considering the instruments he uses. At this rate, Touhou as a shmup will die quickly and then become a hole full of garbage.Op Intensify wrote:The last shmup OST that really rocked my ears was Eschatos. Maaaan, I want that ZUN retires quickly in order to let the little prestige the franchise still holds survive.

As long as it continues to have legions of fans that care more about the characters, fanart, and fan fiction than the actual gameplay, Touhou will never die.O. Belive it or not, the moment Touhou dies as a shmup it will become like every other fad in Japan. in 4 or 5 years, it will be forgotten not after going trhough every stage of the downfall of a fad in Japan.Keres wrote:As long as it continues to have legions of fans that care more about the characters, fanart, and fan fiction than the actual gameplay, Touhou will never die.O. But meh, I don't care about it anymore... IN and PCB, Fairy Wars and the "Shoot the Bullets" won't dissapear. I still hope that someday Cave buys Touhou though...

That day will come eventually, and Zun will die in poverty, and Redalice will be swimming in a pool filled with money.

You know who reminds me of ZUN?
Skrillex.
Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites sounds exactly like a rejected Touhou track (or a fan remix of one).
ZUN's had a million opportunities at this point to go full-on professional with Touhou and make a killing, why hasn't he jumped for any? Imagine what could be done with the series in the hands of G-Rev or Cave, or at least an anime studio.

In his own words: "Because I want to do what I want, I like making games, not pleasing others with then"
But everyone knows that is a façade... he has to mantain it though.

Personally, Zuntata soundtracks are my favorite shmup soundtracks.
Something about the weird, ethereal scores of Darius Gaiden and g-Darius, or the progressive dance beats of the Ray series, just really elevate the games to a new level. Games that are already excellent games (and in the case of G-Darius and Rayforce, amazing and praiseworthy games), but ZUNTATA - specifically here OGR, Tamayo, and .YACK - were masters at Taito of creating the perfect atmosphere with their scores. I regularly listen to their scores to get inspiration in my own music production and composition, because they are really sometimes out there. Especially OGR; he's easily the most experimental of the original ZUNTATA bunch. Tamayo was more controlled, and her music screamed Europhile (not a bad thing!), and .YACK excelled at jazzy improvisations. MAR gets bonus points for his kickin' Night Striker soundtrack but I don't know what any other members of ZUNTATA did aside from the big three.
It's refreshing to hear music so different in a STG.

Thanks for sharing EmperorIng. Your post has reminded me to check out Darius and other Zuntata games, which I haven't given much attention to (outside of Metal Black).

ZUN is a good composer; it's arrangement he isn't good at, hence the cheap and tinny sound, poor instrument choice and whatnot. If somebody else can arrange your composition so that it sounds great, it definitely means it's a good composition in the first place.
In my opinion, though, his composition was on its peak during TH7-TH8-TH9-TH9.5 and went on a continual decline afterwards; the arrangement has considerably improved somewhere around TH9 and the following games (they're definitely less tinny and more roomy), but it's still nowhere as interesting or complex as Umemoto, Namiki, etc.

hey, you try composing after 4 beers
Re: About Shmups soundtracks, mainstream, not so mainstream,Etc.
Zun's compositions are complex, but also repetitive and they sound alike, is the Sakuraba Syndrome.
I still can believe how many fans Umemoto has, and he only did a couple of Shmup Soundtracks. That guy had future, it's a shame.
