A suspicion concerning Gun.Smoke hardware revisions

Post by Ed Oscuro »

I notice, on eBay and elsewhere, two different general styles of Gun.Smoke board.

One has a big black custom chip at one of the wide edges (and diagonally across the board from that is a white Capcom sticker).

The other looks more like a regular PCB, as seen here, but still has Capcom silkscreened on the board, and the usual silvery style ROM window stickers.

Was this a Romstar release, or did the game undergo a revision at some point? Is the one with the big custom package Japanese, possibly?

It's double layered, the top layer has the black box, the bottom layer looks like your picture.

So the bottom layer has the parts facing outward? It doesn't look like the board connectors shown in the picture will attach to anything above, although I can see the PCB spacers sticking up now. Very strange. They're selling it as working (presumably), but it won't work if the top board isn't included...

Thanks for the help guys!

Well there's also no JAMMA connector on the bottom board either.

Caveat emptor.

That's not surprising since it's not a JAMMA board
