In my case, being a newbie buyer, I didn't know what it was worth. A problem is that it might just have been trading hands cheaply but infrequently - some people tell me they've never seen one for sale before (and that's true of me, too). Hard to judge these things sometimes. In the way of justifying a higher price, it is one of the later crop of DE games, like Edward Randy. And hell, people are trying to charge $175 for Robocop, instead of $40 which I still think is closer to what it's worth.

I was thinking that it was this guy who bought it, but it can't be him, he already owns the full libraries of most of those systems and a ton of other stuff (arcade cabs, PCBs, RC cars, rare Star Wars goods, a Ferrari). Right now he's closing in on a complete JPN Neo-Geo AES collection.

I agree with the second part. $1.3 million is a little over the odds despite what's on offer.

Funny thing is, I knew this would sell. I expected it to. Some rich guy who no longer sees money as a finite commodity just thought 'why not' - more bang for your buck than a painting or something.

But I always figured half the enjoyment of amassing a collection was the finding and acquisition, then the chance to inspect and enjoy playing. There's too much choice all at once, he may as well have paid for a torrent of complete romsets.

Would I trade all those days scraping the best stuff from the game store I used to work in, those rainy outings in Akihabara and the warehouses on the outskirts of Fuji, or last minute auction wins to instead have everything delivered wholesale, one-fell-swoop into my lap?

Not for a million bucks.
