Air Grave and Geppy-X

Post by Moogs »

While scouring eBay (just scored a copy of Border Down), I decided to look at PS1 imports. I happened across two -- Air Grave and Geppy-X -- that I had never heard of before. I've been trying to find more detailed information about these games, but aside from screenshots and quick comments that don't help much, I can't find anything. So... has anyone here played either one of these? I appreciate any feedback you guys can give me.

air grave is terrbile, clunky controls and sub-par graphics.. feels like a homemade shmup.. definetly doesnt deserve such a high price..

I kinda had a feeling that was the case... probably explains why it was one of the least expensive PS1 imports that seller had. It was $40.

$40 is the most anyone should pay for Airgrave. Cool name, nice looking cover (except there's no anime scenes in-game), but IIRC, very bland lock-on gameplay. FYI, Airgrave's prequel Stahlfeder is also pretty ordinary although I haven't spent enough time playing either game.

Geppy-X has a lengthy anime scene before and after every stage, mimicking an anime episode for each stage (sort of like Eretzvaju/Evil Zone). There's even supposedly made-up advertisements in the game. Don't own the game so I never found out how the gameplay is like.

Eh, you never knew what Geppy-X is? Basically a parody of the giant robo anime of the 70s era in shmup form, comes with two (? sure it's 2) discs. I remember a guy dedicated some web page to the game, but it's been two years since I've seen it last and Google's not showing it up.

By all accounts, I've heard it's an enjoyable one.

Geppy-X is awesome. It's four discs packed with 10 levels, commercials and cutscenes, some animated really well, others suited for old PCE games. The graphics and design are killer and the soundtrack is one of the most hummable ever (the boss music especially, oh mercy).

The gameplay is at first not that hot; reminds one more of Cho Aniki than anything, but as you level up, the plethora of cool powerups shines through and there's some really enjoyable levels and boss battles. Never boring, but not really a shooter meant to be played for score (I could 1CC on my second or third play).

It goes for a lot online, but it's a really cool game. I'm not regretting my purchase, especially considering rare PS1 imports are only going to appreciate in value.

if youre just looking for some "bang for your bucks" then pick up the dazeamon (spelling?) collection for the PSX, it has hundreds of fan-made shmups on it and pretty much all of them are better than airgrave and stahlfeder..

I think the specific game is "Dezaemon Kids," right? There's another such game, "Dezaemon Plus," on the PS1, and I think that only the former has the load o' mini-shmups on it.

airgrave's clunky graphics might made a major hole in santos's profit but at least the soundtrack is one of my fav shmup OSTs out there tho

Ah yes, I saw a lone copy of Geppy-X for sale at a Japanese game shop with the usual MSRP 6,800 yen price tag -- bought it right away back in March of 2000. The background music with the groovy vocals on the very last disc (disc #4) was legendary when fighting the very last boss. It certainly is worth it's weight in gold indeed. I was hoping that Geppy-X would get the single DVD-Rom disc treatment as a re-release on the PS2 platform but it never was meant to be. The anime cut scenes are worth checking out, especially with the sexy 'n' busty gal with the glasses -- quite a hottie. Her upper attributes are definitely more than a handful easily -- fan service at it's best.
