Front Mission 3 (one of the few tactical RPGs I still enjoy after becoming burned out on the sub-genre)
Zone of the Enders (worthy of greater recognition than just being "the game that came with the MGS2 demo")
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner (one of my favourite PS2 games)

Heard mixed reviews of the Enders games. If I see a copy cheap I'll try it out.

Is ZOE II much much better than the first one? I found the first one was neat for about 5 minutes.

I wasn't overly impressed with the first ZOE, it was ok but I would have been pissed if i'd paid full price for it.

The plot was rather hackneyed but I could forgive it because the fights looked cool. And while I was playing it I put up with revisiting the same areas over and over because I thought the game was going to be about 10 times longer than it actually was.

I was playing under the expectation of better things to come, but better things never came because the game ended just as it started to get going.

Yep, I've played both and I had the same feeling with the first one ending when things were getting interesting..

In ZOE2 it however does pick up the pace and has constant awesome battles going on and a much more "epic" storyline and cutscenes, I'd say its much better. ZOE had some good gameplay mechanic ideas and other things, ZOE 2 picks them up and uses them into making a great game. However, I haven't played either in a long time so I might be exaggerating or something.

I remember reading somewhere that ZOE 1 was a rushed project. Many things were cut off from the game because of the deadline. After ZOE 2 was released, Kojima said the sequel was "the game that the original was supposed to be".

The ZOE2 strategy guide was out there on the display rack and quite easy to see and grab. Since I already had a copy of the game, I thought that it would be cool get the guide to help me out if I ever got stumped in a certain stage. ^_~

There have been a few times where I'd get a free lunch at the high school cafeteria even when I insisted on paying for it, the cafeteria cashier lady waved me on through. Can't beat that either. ^_~

Rubble Saver (a.k.a. The Adventures of Star Saver) for the GB. Still not sure what to make of it, but got a cart cheap and sorta enjoyed the gameplay, despite the slowdown.
It's an oddball game first and foremost (renders Blaster Master/Metafight pretty conventional), so if you get serious about robots in your games, feel warned.
I'd say a cartridge in a good shape is worth owning for the artwork alone.

In other news, I just watched a gameplay video of the aforementioned Blood Gear for the PC Engine. Expected something slicker of the Wonder Boy/Monster World makers, but the explosions surely are among best on the platform. Looks like "Phantasy Star meets a sidescroller" from what I've seen.

Earthseige series by Serria on the PC is worth checking out. may be from the mid 90s(1994 for game 1?) but enjoyed it as a kid and still do today.

Nobody's mentioned Thexder yet? That one and Firehawk: Thexder 2 are pretty entertaining.

Cybernator's still the most fun I've had with a mech-themed game. Or at least it's tied with VO:OT. There's also that VOOTish series by Nintendo; I forgot what it's called (and it may have already been mentioned). It looked decent.

I agree on Hyper Duel's super awesomeness :D Don't forget the Aleste games, CyBattler, and Bari-Arm if we're considering trad. shmups!

Thexder seems to be more of a robot game, like Atomic Robo-Kid or Act-Fancer: Cybernetick Hyper Weapon. Makes difference for some.

This thread is so disappointing that it doesn't mention Omega Boost on the PS1.
I like it more than Zone of the Enders even.

Also, seconding Ranger X on the Genesis. Great fun, technically impressive, and actually uses the 6 button controller for something.

I'm with null1024. Omega Boost is THE shit, no matter how much Polyphony Digital wrote if off its history. Never forget.

Best use of live action awesomeness too. Dat opening was great. Also, the game ran at 60fps on the PSX, I mean, holy shit.

If the promises of Strike Suit Zero come true, it could well be its spiritual successor. (Homeworld composer+Appleseed designer for the mechs+loads of missiles and a transformable mecha sounds like an absolute winner for me, they better keep it at 60fps too...)

The Macross game for PS2 (DYRL), hell, yeah, that was pretty nice too indeed.

louisg, are you thinking of the Battle Clash games? They were one of the few games that used the Super Scope peripheral for the SNES, which I had as a kid and thought was the coolest fucking thing ever.

Surely, Custom Robo counts? Such a great little series. Noise really needs to make a new game for the Wii U, if they're even alive (seems they are).

Wolf Fang (otherwise known as Rohga Armor Force) is a good arcade semi-shmup. Honestly, I'd call it a shmup anyway, simply for the forced scrolling, even if that isn't really a qualifier.

FEAR 2 & FEAR 3 have mech sections that are totally badass.

My dream game would be like FEAR 2's mech section through out the whole game.

Assault Suit Leynos 2 is a favorite of mine.

- Very concise levels
- Amazing graphics; insane sprite rotation and scaling
- Almost as much customization and machine tweaking as an Armored Core game--practically unheard of in a 2D game
- Satisfying weapons and speed
- HUGE bosses
- One of the few Saturn games to make full use of every controller button

Shame about the sporadic difficulty curve though. First mission is hard, next two are easy, fourth is borderline impossible!

I wish NCS was still around. Don't they still exist as a comatose rights-holding group? Who owns Cho Aniki now?

Shoutout also goes to Girly Block, Compile's bizarrely titled MSX mech game my signature is taken from.

ASL2 really falls short of its potential. It's a shame. It's good, but yeah, you do have to be willing to overlook the difficulty curve issues.

Get's a neat, intricate controller (and I assume foot pedal?) a la Steel Battalion. If you loved that game, you'd be doing a disservice to it's developer not to buy the game within at least the first week, if possible. Stuff like this should be encouraged in the industry, not ignored. It's the only thing at E3 that got me excited like a kid again this year.

I always thought PS1 Carnage Heart was really cool. That's the one where you design mech A.I. to fight for you. You can be simple and just advance, face enemies, and shoot. Or get all fancy and detect incoming fire and dodge, check for friendly fire, toss in random events to prevent easy counters, etc.

Steel Battalion is most notable for its joypad.

The project lead wanted to make it out of actual steel, but the logistics of it made it a silly idea. ~80 lb. controller and all that.

Gamecenter CX has an episode where our hero plays the game. In a movie theater. Which is the sort of experience they try to create with it. Using the eject button seems like a good idea.
PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.
