I am glad they stepped in and saved this from the sewer.

Re: Sega bringing Taito Legends to US
Say, what "sewer" are you talking about there? And please realize that this one is a hodge podge of the two Japanese ones, totalling only half the games. No Elevator Action Returns, Crazy Balloon, Don Doko Don, Jigoku Meguri, Fairyland Story, Grid Seeker (which sucks, but this is shmups.com) or even Cameltry. But hey, at least you won't have to stoop to sewer level to play some classics.Brian wrote:http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09/13 ... 33138.html

I never played any other version of it, but I didn't notice any "major" problems, at least in the relatively small amount I've played so far...I'm sure others will probably note incorrect resolution or something though, which my eye's not trained enough to notice very much. It's basically supposed to be an emulated version of the arcade version, right? I'd guess that's pretty much what it is, at any rate...

As far as I can tell so far:CMoon wrote:For those who bought the japanese version, how did G-Darius turn out?
Fan-fucking-tastic!

I played the PSX version quite a bit, and the arcade version presented on the compilation is easily my favorite of the two. This version runs lightning fast, eliminating almost all of the slowdown present in the PSX rev. Also, a lot of the "jagged-ness" of the PSX version seems smoothed out, and the textures seem better as well. It might have taken a bit of a hit in the sound department, but I haven't compared the two enough to tell yet (I'm going by memory of the PSX version).
The Taito Memories version of Raystorm seems slightly superior to the PSX version too, in terms of graphics and slowdown. Also, Gekirindan is pretty spot on, save for no true low-res and lack of tate.

G.Darius in TMGekan turned out pretty good. There's no music pause at the zone branches, and (YMMV here) the slowdown is apparently gone.Ganelon wrote:They should've localized Taito Memories Vol. 1&2 instead. Maybe of the games exclusive to Legends, while perhaps popular in Europe, weren't popular at all in the US.
Thunderfox has a few extra vehicle scenes in the arcade game that the Genesis version doesn't. In the arcade version you're flying some sort of hovercraft to get to the large R-Type mothership sized plane in stage 2.
I'll still buy Legends for the exclusives. To name a few, I just can't ignore the gun games, Rainbow Islands (whose absence from the Japanese Memories packs I find rather odd), and Thunderfox in this one.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Hey, I didn't know.
But you figure, it costs about $25-35 shipped to get the Action Replay 4M Plus to play SS imports. Similarly, it costs about $30-35 shipped to get a fliptop and Swap Magic (or $20-30 for a slidecard and Swap Magic) to play PS2 imports. How could anybody be willing to shell out the money for one import device and not the other when both systems are excellent shooter machines?

I've got a modded Saturn already, and I fear modding of any kind because I know how I can mess up everything. Anyways, weren't slide cards bad for systems? I don't want to risk breaking my PS2 'cause it took me ages to save up for one. I'll think about it if it's relatively safe.

A fliptop can be easily installed in about 10 minutes (at least for the old type; dunno about the slim type) and has no real risks (you expose the laser when opening the fliptop but then again, that's the case for every top-loading system).
A slide card may cause damage to your tray ejection over time (or even immediately if you push too hard) so yeah, I wouldn't recommend going that route.

One more question. If I go with the flip top, what are the games that don't work right? I have heard something to the effect (about DDDOJ's black label not working and so on.) Thanks for the suggestions.

You'll need a fliptop with Swap Magic discs combo to play PS2 imports (unless you go the JP PS2 or a modded PS2 routes). The Swap Magic discs are what determine what games can be played or not. Anything v3.3 (v.3.6 is the latest version now, one step up from v3.3, the major difference being it works fine on slim PS2's) can play DOJ Death Label and any other shooters (dunno about Shienryu) just fine.
The only thing that won't work on Swap Magic are the few double layered games such as that Sakura Taisen adventure game.
