info on Tate Broadcast Television ?

Post by Koa Zo »

I recall reading on this forum about a Swedish, iirc, television station from long ago which broadcast shows in a vertical format.

I also remember a web page or wiki article which provided more information.

After a half hour of searching terms and combinations of terms, I give up!

Does anyone here remember this and have any details to share?

But how would it have worked?

a) wouldn't the shows being broadcast need to have been shot in tate in the first place?

b) there would have been an expectation for viewers to actually rotate their sets, an action usually reserved for freaks like STG players like us who get a kick out of doing outrageous shit like that in the name of authenticity?

Still, if it did exist, I would have probably given it a go :)

Yes, shows were shot in a vertical format. From what I remember reading the format was experimented with very briefly in the 1960's when tv was reletively new. I have the impression that it was used for news and commentary programmes where more of the presenter's figure could be shown, rather than the "talking head" that was common with horizontal display. I do believe from what I read previously that there were only a few shows filmed and broadcast this way. And yes, certainly the viewers would have been required to stand their televisions on end.

I'm surprised no one else remembers this being mentioned or discussed. I remember it being mentioned in a thread about tate-ing tv's back in 2004 or 2005.

Wow. That is incredible, I had never heard of that until your post.

Shame it didn't take off, but I guess the reasons for that are obvious. Would love to see some archive footage from one of these shows, if it can ever be uncovered.

The closest we have to this these days is those advertisement reels on tated LCD screens in shopping centers.

Sure you're not confusing aspect ratio and CRT orientation?
