Do people use HDMI to DVI ports/adapters?
Do people use HDMI to DVI ports/adapters?
This seems to be a cheap way to deal with monitors that don't have HDMI ports

Yes, they do work. Obviously without audio.
You can also buy HDMI -> DVI cables if you don't want to fuss with adapters.

So if the HDMI to DVI doesn't bring the audio, what is the best way to get the audio from an Xbox? I want to make sure I buy a monitor I can use on my computer and PC.
Is buying a monitor with HDMI and DVI hookups the only way to get audio and video from Xbox and PC?

What good does HDMI on a monitor do, if you don't have speakers in the monitor ?
Re: Do people use HDMI to DVI ports/adapters?
Ok, how do I split the audio and video signal from the Xbox to a PC monitor then? Thanks.Fudoh wrote:What good does HDMI on a monitor do, if you don't have speakers in the monitor ?

You can use Toslink, analog audio or use a HDMI splitter and feed the second HDMI cable to your sound system somehow.

You're lucky it's just for the 360, because it has both the HDMI output and the regular multi-AV out port.
You can grab one of these:

Just to get the audio out. You might have to fiddle with settings in the dashboard to tell it not to use the HDMI for audio?

Mine has RCA for 2.1 out, but no onboard audio. I actually use it to record audio through my sound card since the Avermedia card I use for HDMI recording doesn't like different audio sample rates over HDMI.Fudoh wrote:What good does HDMI on a monitor do, if you don't have speakers in the monitor ?
Also be aware of HDCP. Not a big problem with the 360, but monitors may not support HDCP if they're older, which creates problems for the Playstation 3 and presumably the Wii U.
Re: Do people use HDMI to DVI ports/adapters?
a little clarity please, how do I branch this out? Xbox has one HDMI output. The Ebay item seems to plug into that one HDMI and the other end is just RCA audio (no video) http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Optical-RCA-Audi ... 4d0094f6b5

No that cable plugs into the multi-AV out port, right above the HDMI connector.schnoo wrote:a little clarity please, how do I branch this out? Xbox has one HDMI output. So the HDMI would go to your display for video, and the adapter would go into the xbox multi-av then either toslink optical or RCA to your audio amplifier.
Re: Do people use HDMI to DVI ports/adapters?
Didn't your 360 come with one of these? You just plug both the audio adapter and the HDMI cable into your 360 and you're done. No need to setup audio or anything (at least that's what I remember). On PS3 you'll have to setup audio over analog first if you use HDMI.
Re: Do people use HDMI to DVI ports/adapters?
Many didn't. One of the many ways Microsoft got money from those low cost 360s... Want to use HDMI and optical or analog audio at the same time? Buy an overpriced adapter.blizzz wrote:Didn't your 360 come with one of these?

I have a Jasper Xbox 360 and it only has one HDMI output and one A/V (component, not optical).

@shmuppylove the deice you showed me has an HDMI on one end, not the big ugly A/V tip.
Are you suggesting this:
From Xbox 360 HDMI to monitor for video (DVI adapter if needed), and simultaneously
From Xbox 360 A/V to speakers, etc. for audio?

The A/V tip isn't that big and ugly. It's just that on the default cable, to sell you the slimmer one that fits along with a HDMI cable. It's all just thick layers of plastic really.@shmuppylove the deice you showed me has an HDMI on one end, not the big ugly A/V tip.
The ebay auctions linked to do *NOT* have a HDMI end.

Re: Do people use HDMI to DVI ports/adapters?
On the newer 360 Slim consoles, on the backside is an HDMI output & a seperate dedicated Toslink/digital audio output located to the right of the HDMI port as well. And of course, there's the obligatory A/V port loacated just below the HDMI port also. However, you can use either HDMI or the A/V port but not both at the same time. Why? Because the default 360 A/V RCA composite video cable + L&R RCA phono audio jacks cable setup (that's included with a new 360 Slim console) will cover up access to the HDMI port, thus denying you access to it. Pretty crafty of MS to go with that redesigned HDMI & A/V port scheme. WTF?!
With the Official MS 360 VGA adapter cable, there's a handy Toslink output in addition to the handy analog RCA phono L&R audio jacks already present at your disposal.
As for the UK Official MS 360 Advance Scart adapter cable, it's got a 21-pinout along with the obligatory Toslink output option included.
MS never did release an official 360 Japanese RGB adapter cable.

This -- it is not an HDMI connector. It's the 360 A/V connector. I know it might not look like it from the picture, but they are totally different. Look at the back of your 360 and you will see both.ZellSF wrote:The A/V tip isn't that big and ugly.
