Traitor - yet another Flash shmup

Post by Ixmucane2 »

Traitor is a flawed but interesting shmup.
Setting aside the well-developed story, the rather nice graphics and the moderate freedom to choose which level to play next, the game is rather easy.
In particular, most bosses are disappointingly trivial (some are among the most harmless popcorn in the level), many levels are repetitive and boring, and your only weapon is a weak pea-shooter that can be upgraded to be faster and inflict more damage.
However, the most important flaw, unavoidable hits and the functional equivalent of a generous lifebar, is so exaggerated that it maneges to become an interesting feature.
Collisions cause less damage accordingly to how much the enemy or asteroid has been damaged by your shot: as you accumulate hit point upgrades and quick health regeneration, enemy bullets become almost negligible and softening enemies with the basically inadequate shot before ramming them becomes a core mechanic: what should I ram for score and safety? Have I damaged this or that large enemy enough to survive ramming it? Am I really low on hit points, or able to ram once more?
It remains an excessively easy game, but it made me want to see more ramming in better games.

The only shmup i can think of that incorporates "ramming" into the gameplay is Hitogata Happa. Ramming into bosses to do big damage while sacrificing a life in the process, afaik you can rack up ALOT of extra lives to offset this though.

Also P47 Aces, although that's more humping than ramming. ;) Cybattler also lets you ram, although it doesn't do any damage to either party. Just makes melee safer.

Guessing it's a Jaleco thing.
