Most doujinsoft doesn't work for me as I don't run Windows. I know a bunch of others here don't run Windows either, and this basically excludes us unless we want to dual-boot (which I don't).

I'd rather just stick with previously mentioned ideas, which let there be an almost equal chance for any game.

This sounds like fun and casual.

heres my suggestions, if it's not too late for that.

It'd be good to keep track of games already chosen at the front page of each STG of the month thread.

I'll try to contribute something but right now stage 4 is owning me hard. I think I need to practice it in Score Attack mode (Saturn version, y'see) because on the rare occasion I get to boss, it's with no lives left and I'm not prepared for most of the patterns.

Maybe you could make posting a replay for your final, definitive score mandatory? So we can avoid any (or most) complaints of people posting fake scores?

I've recently looped with the type A ship, I'll see if I can do another try with type C during the weekend.

lulz, This isn't a competition. If people get off on posting fake scores, then seriously just... whatever helps them sleep better at night. I know my goal for this was a 1-ALL and 10M+ and I just nailed it. Don't know if I'll keep going, though, because holyshitsuicidebulletsarescaryasfuck.

Could always request a replay from the top player or the top three or something. it's not like recording .inps is troublesome or anything for a mame player.. just have to use shift+f3 to reset.

Not so much because of forgery paranoia, but it would be really nice if top scorers could generate some more material, replays, video footage, written strategy, figurative dance performances, anything really. See, there's even a thread right here about the difficulty of finding good DP videos.
Of course nobody is gonna beat the japs scores in a month, but anything is helpful. If finding decent Type-A gameplay for a Cave game is being somewhat challenging, I can only wonder what when some more obscure titles get picked as STG of the Month.

I second this. I would look forward to reading and viewing more of that from the members of this board. Any of that would be greatly appreciated.

Thirded. It'd certainly help with those having trouble with the Stage 2 boss. I personally found it hard to believe that anyone could get confused about the discs but then again I'm like the only guy who actually listens to voice commentary. I've got no problems upping kusoplay .inps of all of my works.

Anyone fussy about the version of MAME used?

Leave it to nerds to talk about how to choose the next game and post scores rather than the game itself.
I played this game, (which I love) for the first time in awhile just last night, and saw the twitter about this thread today.
1. The chaining is hard
2. Is the voice the guy from C.H.I.P.S
3. I used to have the HK pcb, it was a great game! I liked the hard and short version.
4. I love the canon-- it's great to try donpachi after ddp dfk.
5. I like the blue laser bomb sound-- can't think of it done better in ANY game. Plus, the green laser has a very cool kind of "see through energy" quality to it. They really treated the lasers special in that one, barely trumping r-shark ha ha.
6. Great bosses, too. A lot of character.
7. Could have used more variety in the backgrounds. Land, sky, boats, sky sky sky. Beautiful, though.
8. Wow what a great game. Very slick. Love the CHIPS voice!

Well there's my personal best using the Type B. Goddamn the Japan version has way more bullets compared to the US. I can actually see how they got bullet hell out of this now.

Died at roughly the same spot though - two powerup ships appear BUT WAIT ITS A TRAP-*dead*

You know, I've been giving this some thought for a while now, but I think the SOTM idea would be more interesting if the games selected didn't last a month, or in DP's case 1 1/2 months. It's my belief that people will generally play over the course of two weeks until they get a score they are happy with and typically refrain from playing once they hit that point, especially with the idea that they will be preparing to play something else in the near future in line with SOTM.

How about a "STG of the half-month" then?

Got to the final boss with 2 spare lives, failed the safespot. Fuck this gay earth. This was after a great run that no-missed till mid-stage 5.

The safe spot does not always work. I know this from lots of experience :D

I am not sure why it works sometimes and other times it doesn't. The problem is the bulllets are too fast to adjust and when the boss is right next to you and you are in the upper right corner, you can just die. Keep at it RNGmaster!

Upper right? I mean the safespot right next to the center bottom of the screen that you use for the opening attack.

I mean to at least make it to 2-3 by the end of May. Thanks for your encouragement - I'll check out the other safespot too.

I feel like RNGmaser and zlk are talking about two different bosses. zlk is talking about the TLB, while RNGmaster is talking about the 1-5 boss.

Yeah, no way in hell I'm doing the TLB after 1.5 weeks.

OOPS! Yes we are talking about two separate bosses. And I also made a mistake of saying upper right instead of upper left.

The 1-5 safe spot should always work. Just line up using where your laser is hitting the boss. Use that to determine the safe spot, not your ships location as the screen can scroll left and right. I hope that makes sense.

Eh, bombspam and dodging are probably about as efficient.

Concerning the safespot on the 1-5 opener, use the background part pointed at as a point of reference, just line up your ship's cockpit to be touching the tip of the left or right side. This only works on the 1st rep of the pattern, once the boss repeats the pattern the safespot doesn't work.

Being in the middle of the same point of reference will dodge the blue tank bullets.
