Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
Yeh indeed. I listen to those plays and other HPL audiobooks a fair bit. Will check out Whisperer in the Darkness, as I hadn't heard about that one. Thanks!

Re: Movies you've just watched
Reanimator turned out to be pretty good. I really liked the intro with the animated heads. It didn't have that cheesy B-movie feel like I was expecting. It was actually well made the dude who playes Herbert West was really good.
I'm a little confused though. All the reviews I read called it a horror/comedy. The tone is kind of campy, but there was only one time where my buddy and I lol'd (towards the end. I don't want to give it away for Rancor).
it's also funny to watch the tv spots on the special features. They're all like "WARNING do not see this movie if you're sqeamish or have heart problems etc....". Was it really that extreme for it's time (1985)?
And did anyone catch that West's professor in Switzerland was Hans Gruber?

I wouldn't call it a horror comedy. More a horror black comedy - the humour is mostly in its total irreverence about death and related taboos.
Combs is great on that front - I cracked up more than once at his flawlessly deapanned delivery of the totally wrong shit West gets up to. The guy who played his housemate did a good job as straight man, as well.
I noticed the Gruber thing too, haha. As someone on the IMDB board said, he sure got back on his feet between Re-Animator and Die Hard.

Watched "Nobody Knows" (dare mo shiranai) last night, about 4 Japanese kids who are abandoned by their mother and live for a year alone. Very good. I don't always enjoy Ozu-ish or verite-ish works, but I really liked this. There was artifice and beauty in the framing that was obviously consciously chosen, but it was never pretentious or unnecessary, I thought. Amazing acting from the child leads too.
I haven't been keeping up with modern Japanese film, and my only exposures have been schlocky dorama dreck like Departures or Miike + Miike-derivative stuff, which I also hate. Very refreshing to see a director who I can respect at this "late hour."
Have to check his other stuff out...

Watched an all-nighter at the IMAX on Saturday night / Sunday morning. The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
You really do think you've been to hell and back after seeing what Frodo and the fellowship have to put themselves through. At the same time, you kind of understand as to why Frodo has to take another "adventure" at the end of RotK - the guy's been so badly scarred and institutionalised from all the constant fighting. Like a Vietnam vet who just can't cope with reality after the war is over. Poor guy.

Akira without the budget, or the film-rights for that matter.1up wrote:Watched Chronicle yesterday. It was surprisingly good, but I had no expectations what so ever. Most of the movie where they explore their 'talent' it reminded me a lot of those ratchet and clank commercialsAnd the final battle was just over the top crazy. The story is basically the same as in Akira where Tetsuo gets drunk with power.
8/10
I wouldn't say that the guy becomes drunk with power. The film's no different to S King's Carrie. Would you exact revenge on those who continually slighted you if you had the chance? I think the film is less about an examination of how power can be wielded, and more about human nature and how respect and compliance is essentially earned through fear. Sometimes, you just have no other choice.

Were they theatrical or extended? I did the extended marathon last summer, but it was from morning until evening. Brutal, but fun.replayme wrote:Watched an all-nighter at the IMAX on Saturday night / Sunday morning. The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

Theatrical. The show started at 11:30pm Saturday night, and I walked out just after 10:00am on Sunday morning. It was brutal, yes. But the experience was so worth it. I walked out with a sense of accomplishment afterwards, and felt like I had really grown with the central characters, and walked in their footsteps.
I don't think my life will ever be the same afterwards...

Joint Security Area - 4/5.
Not at all what I was expecting, solid acting, (except the "Swede" ) sorta feel-good movie for guys.

Checked out "The Divide" with a nuclear blast that hits New York and a rag-tag crew of survivors huddled inside an underground basement. Interesting premise that leads to a predictable ending.

The Raid
Plot thin, developments ludicrous, script iffy... yet blindingly awesome.
Demonstrates everything Hollywood has been getting wrong for the last twenty years with regard to action movies.
It features:
- An all male cast
- No humor
- Ultra (ultra) violence
- Incredibly dynamic full contact fight sequences
- Tension
- Set-pieces that make you sit up out of your chair
It's full of cliche and its not particularly clever in anything except its execution. It's Die Hard meets Hard Boiled, done properly, and that's enough for me.

Melancholia.
The majority of it was filmed with a handheld camera and the entire first half has a yellow filter. From the second half all major plot elements are implied through conversation instead of shown. Me and my roomy predicted most of the stuff that was going to happen well before it did. With the exception of CG used in the final scene, all the space stuff is stock footage. It came off to me as cheap crud passed off as an art film.
Don't try to explain it to me, I got it. I get the movie. I just think it's a boring waste of time meant to appeal to pretentious people.

Beautifully shot, well acted, looks spectacular and have some quite exciting scenes. Why is it though, that spaceships always happen to land at the most perfect place (to find trouble) on an uncharted planet? I for one, would like to see them at least fly around the planet awhile while scanning it for structures and whatnot.

You have to admit, that last fight scene was breathtaking. Such an awe-inspiring visual feast, and so much to take in when tracking all the actors' moves and fight choreography...Skykid wrote:The Raid

Pretty odd movie, but very entertaining. The ending scene is awesome.
Goodbye, Dragon Inn
Absolutely terrible. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. This imdb review sums it up perfectly:

Goodbye, Dragon Inn
Absolutely terrible. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. This imdb review sums it up perfectly:
Unending static camera shots of nothing, empty halls, grimy back rooms. Extremely spare and absurdest dialog. Zero plot or point. About as much soul and warmth as a stone cold tile bathroom floor.
Lighting ranges from dim to dark and dank.
No character development, actually no characters, just zombie-like warm bodies occupying a few scenes.
A promising premise (the last day of an old Asian kung fu movie house) goes nowhere and elicits no emotion except extreme tedium.
Truly one of the worst theater experiences I have ever been subjected to.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Going to the movies to watch tis today. Was going to watch it yesterday but Got a call from the theatre saying that they accidentale broke the movie?? Got the refund and am going to a different theatre today. I was pretty mad. But then I thought about all the money they missed out on. 400 tickets x 2 showings at 85 crowns = 68.000 ~ $12.000 not including snacks. And that was just yesterdayemphatic wrote:P R O M E T H E U S - 4/5

For Tsai-Ming Liang films, Rebels of the Neon God would definitely suit you better.
Last night I watched Midnight Express which I enjoyed a lot, although I felt it was over sensationalised in a few aspects that took away some of its impact.
