Watch the cool old-school three episodic OVA of Odeo 808 (circa 1990)...cyberpunk genre at it's best .

There's the "Gall Force: Fighting Spirits '89" movie worth checking out as well.

There's always Gantz Abridged.

It's like Reverse Ghostbusters, if the ghostbusters were weird creepy horrible aliens that slaughter the fuck out of everything.

"You just got Kuro'owned!"

"Pacifism head explosion!"

I wish I could use these and 1 person out there in the universe was able to appreciate the reference. Shit my luck.

The Pico trilogy is great. It might not be exactly what Illyrian is looking for here, but maybe he'd enjoy it. I'd recommend watching them in reverse order.

Mononoke
Bokurano
Katanagatari

I don't see the problem with Gurren Lagann. The concept isn't extraordinary, but the execution is pretty solid. The reason some shows are unwatchable is because they fucked up the latter.

It fails the #1 criteria very hard. 1. No whiny pussy male protagonist who doesn't realise all of the female characters love him

Well... if we bombard him with this much anime he will never finish watching then... how about we wait until he finishes this list?

There's a lot to be going on with here so I reckon there are more than enough really good suggestions already.

Many thanks everyone!

Gundam 00 (mecha) and Rorouni Kenshin (samurai). You may try the lovely, but a bit post-modern Eureka Seven (mecha). Another gem is Planetes (hard sci-fi). I don't know how much you're into weird/psychedelic stuff, but Arakawa under the bridge is really lovely.

I wonder if you watched Captain Harlock, Illyrian. If you haven't, do it now. The original series had that choppy '70s animation style, but it was a masterpiece. If you are still in retro mood, Ashita no Joe is another classic.

Man... I would so bang Tessa testarossa.

I love how the robots in FMP arent those unrealistic humanod robot shit like Mazinger has or most other Anime Sci-fi. Saying that, there's just not enough real robots in Anime, where's my fucking spiderbots? (ok fuchi/Tachikoma count but i need more!)

Plus, Gauron is the shit

Couldn't have said it better myself. That title represents all that is wrong with anime today. If you stick with stuff from the 80s and early 90s you can't go wrong.

I do enjoy it, but I can't deny the truth. Nothing beats stuff from the 70s to early 90s in my book. Especially the 80s.

yeah - I had originally included the 70s in my post, but edited it out. Honestly a lot of that stuff is really hit-or-miss. It's akin to the late 90s.. Sure there are some good titles, but there's a lot of shit as well.

If you hate that kind of character, Detroit Metal City is one of the funniest takes on it I've ever seen. Plus it has half-length episodes so if you're not ROFLing by the end of the first episode it's only 10 minutes of your time.

Akagi is a great show, though. Some of tracks on the soundtrack are actually remixes of Aphex Twin tracks. Haven't seen Kaiji yet, but I want to, I'm a big fun of the Fukumoto's work.
Brofist.jpg

Fukumoto is a manga god. If you haven't read Kurosawa yet, do it! If this manga don't touch you in some way you are clearly dead inside. It is his best work so far. Kaiji is really great but more human as a character and less intellectual but on the other hand you get different gambles and not only mahjong. So Kaiji as a show is more diverse and easier to get into. And thanks for the Aphex Twin heads up, I will check them out since I really enjoyed the OST of both shows.

I could use some recommendations for anything good from the last 5 or so years. See my list for referrence of what I typically like (the darker more serious stuff).

After watching stuff like Monster it has been nearly impossible to find a series that is watchable.

yeah in general I agree, but like you I do definitely enjoy NGE in fact I'm rewatching it atm, I'm even enjoying the filler 'recap' episode (14)...

Shinji is a whining git, but I think the english dub makes him seem MUCH more whiny than he is in the Jap, and the direction/cinematography (well if that is the term you use for anime), is just perfect I think.

Ningyo No Mori/"Mermaid's Forest": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHqtMDdtXgY

This one was subtitled and officially licensed in North America. I really loved the OAV, Ningyo No Kizu/"Mermaid's Scar," and this was done again for the series as the 13th episode.

Space Adventure Cobra (the 2000s OAV remake): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co_JJsl1qGs

It baffles me how this series has been ignored for so long. I have zero esteem for fellow anime fans who don't push for more series such as this one.

Blue Gender: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmvUAAe2 ... re=related

Chara designs and animation quality are average, but I remember liking this series when it aired on Adult Swim back in the early 2000s.

While we're being semi specific in this thread can anyone recommend me some anime with mecha that look along the lines of these:

And NOT shit robots like these that seem to be all the rage these days:

I've already seen FMP, NGE, RahXephon, Gunparade March, ZOE and Escaflowne and probably a few others too, but I can't find many with the type of robots I really want, as detailed above. I just can't wrap my head around why you would make a robot look like a personw hen you can strap huge ass guns to it's arms and rocket pods to it's back...
