I need anime to watch!

Post by Illyrian »

Greetings gents!

So I'm currently looking for anime to watch for after I finish with Romeo x Juliet and Samurai 7. I was hoping that you guys could give me some recommendations!

So what I'm looking for is fairly simple (any combination of these is fine really):
1. No whiny pussy male protagonist who doesn't realise all of the female characters love him
2. None of that moeblob shit going on at the moment
3. People killing each other, giant mech suits a bonus but by no means a requirement
4. Mystical shit that's interesting
5. Goofy stuff is okay
6. Setting, in terms of historical, modern day or future doesn't matter

So basically that's it, I've watched:
Outlaw Star
FMA
Hellsing
Macademi Wasshoi

A bunch of random others I can't remember. I'd totally welcome any suggestions on this matter. I know there's a recommended anime thread but it's like 50 pages and seems to just be general discussion.

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.

With all respect, did you even read my post? I really don't mean to be disrespectful but I'm just asking about a specific type of series hence the different thread. I do know the general thread is there though.

Didn't catch that at the bottom, but my response probably would have been the same. Why not just ask for recommendations in the thread? Those 50+ pages may have a lot of discussion, but they also have a lot of good recommendations and synopsis' about.

  • Daitarn 3 offers oldschool robot combat with an adult male protagonist.
  • Assorted robot series by Go Nagai. You can't go wrong.
  • FMA Brotherhood if you liked FMA; basically a longer and better remake.
  • Last Exile rates high on criteria 1-4, but the angst level is a little high.

Spice and Wolf... one of the best anime i've seen so far.

-----------------

Based on a Light Novel. Set on the low middle ages. Lawrence Craft is a traveling merchant who goes from town to town selling and buying goods. After concluding some bussiness on a town and preparing his campment to sleep he founds a girl with ears and tails of a wolf in his wagon. She presents herself as Horo, though the people at the town has considered her a God for millenia. Sadly, she did't meant for it and she has been trapped on the town's wheat and retained on it by an ancient ritual (it's NOT an OMG ritual, just like the ussual religious practices pagans had). Luckily, a coincidence happens and she's freed by Lawrence from the ritual.

She tells Lawrence about her friends and her home, up in the far north where she was born. Touched by her story, Lawrence offers to guide her back to the north as he travels doing his bussiness. And so, it begins a great comercial partnership and friendship.

---------------------

The story and development are quite unique. It really revolves around trade and comercial transactions as the story explains with lots of details how that world worked on the low middle ages. NO MOEBLOB, though the series have a little of fanservice to spice things a little. In fact, Horo is one of the best characters I've seen so far, with character development through season 1 and 2.

About the setting, there are no explicit mention of it but the story develops on the XV century Baltic Area (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Prussia). There are hints on every chapter, so I consider this series "Historical".

PD: 2 halve seasons long (12 +1 * 1 OVA * 12 episodes * 2 specials). There should be a 3rd season to end the story but it has been more tha 2 years since the last season. Well, let's hope...

PPD: Off I go to rewatch it... so much Nostalgia...

Oh wow thanks for all the suggestions. I've also heard good things about Full Metal Panic as well, and Gurann Lagann. Are those worth watching?

If you're looking anything more than saturday morning villain of the week anime then watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes. In my opinion it's the best space opera I've seen, and not just anime. Even if it doesn't seem interesting to you at least watch 'My Conquest is the Sea of Stars' before you make an opinion of it (Not that I know anyone who ever hated LotGH). After that you should either move to the main OVA series (120 episodes) or watch 'Overtue to a New War' which is a movie that takes place around the first few episodes of the OVA series.

If you want crazy mecha with crazy characters I suggest New Getter Robo. Watch this before watching Gurren Lagann.

Full Metal Panic is great, I especially enjoyed FMP Fumoffu (Great comedy).

Great Teacher Onizuka is also a classic when it comes to comedy.

Wel... Gurren Lagann is like... all of the Cliches on the history of anime put together on a bombastic setting... I still don't get why so many people like it... i left it after chapter 8 out of pure boredom and hate. Also, if you don't want to watch an anime with a whiny protagonist then don't watch Gurren Lagann cause the main char certainly is.

@LtC
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is incredible but I know Illyrian and I do not think it's what he wants to watch.

New Getter Robo is fucking amazing and I endorse this recommendation, also there's Shin Mazinger Z Hen for another modern Go Nagai anime.

Welll, he could watch it but at least he knows now that everything on that series is prefabricated: characters, setting, plot... even the action escenes are prefabricated...

If you like Acid Westerns in Space than you can't go wrong with Cowboy Bebop. It's one of the best animated series of all time, not just within the realm of anime. Trigun, also an Acid Western, is probably worth a look as well, though it's not as good as Bebop.

Also giving a nod to Samurai Champloo which is basically Hip-Hop meets Edo.

To be fair I pretty much hate the genre of anime for all the reasons on the OP's list, but I loved Gurren Lagann specifically because I knew it was taking the piss out of every cliche it pulled.

The troll in me wants to say Boku No Pico, but the mecha fan in me wants to say Big O.

Roger Smith has two breakdowns in Big O, but it's actually just crazy shit going on so it's nothing like the usual whiny protagonist nonsense. I thought Panty & Stocking was really good for a silly anime. Quite a few good action sequences and an entire episode devoted to lovingly making fun of Transformers. Good times.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Full metal Panic is really good. I prefer the first series to the second but i would completely avoid Fumoffu as it's a complete waste of time and is everything you've mentioned you don't want.

The second series is shorter and much darker and violent but personally i think the longer series one has better character development and overall story; Plus, gauron is super badass. Easily one of my favourite bad guys.

I responded to your post before reading any further entries beyond so I don't know if Claymore has been mentioned; It starts out very good, the characters are nice and there's not really any moe, unfortunately I felt the series lost it's way towards the end but still a pretty gory, violent fantasy, medieval romp about killing monsters.

Also, if you can ignore the moe elements, Elfen Lied is awesome.
The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.

Even without my umbillical cable attached I still have over 12,000 plates of fortified armour AND I have my AT Field! There's NO WAY I can lose!!

One very important thing!!!!

When you start watching Gungrave, SKIP THE FIRST EPISODE! I'm no joking, this is something every Gungrave fan will tell you. The series starts at episode 2.

Also, alot of shows take a couple episodes to really get going, if the first episode of something doesn't completely pull you in, don't drop it quite yet.

I just decided to go on a Ghost in the Shell binge. Not generally an anime fan but goddamn it is good. Watch it (and Stand Alone Complex). A similarly trippy title is Serial Experiments Lain, which I also highly recommend.

If movies count you better fucking watch Paprika.

I hear Gauron from FMP is a total badass and almost unkillable. Probably gonna have enough to keep me going for ages thanks to you guys! :D

Oh man, these threads are really depressing, not because people recommending bad Anime but nobody ever recommend Kaiji or Akagi.

If you are reading this Illyrian, please make sure to check out one of those shows, Kaiji had recently even a second season. Both shows are based on Mangas from Nobuyuki Fukumoto and their main themes are Gambling. I know the character design is not everyones taste nor the premise of the shows sounds very interesting, but they are the BEST FUCKING ANIME SHOWS EVER CREATED!

No moe, there are not even women in those shows (aside from Kaiji 2). Very psychological and both shows have a fantastic ost, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meBzDGG7WeU

Also Tonegawa is such a great villain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq7ttau76_Y

Make sure to check them out. It's such a shame that both shows are so unknown.

Seconded, if you want an atmospheric and brutally violent samurai anime with truly dark themes. The lumbering pace and its abrupt stop (it only covers a third or so of the manga) keep me from recommending it unreservedly, but if you've got the time and patience it's a memorably intense slow burner.

edit: oh hell yes, just found the complete manga while looking up the anime to rewatch. :o Nice.

Hah, I was just about to post this, and then you beat me to it.

Akagi is a great show, though. Some of tracks on the soundtrack are actually remixes of Aphex Twin tracks. Haven't seen Kaiji yet, but I want to, I'm a big fun of the Fukumoto's work.

unfortunately in Europe you could do that list like this:

Gurren Lagann

Ghost In The Shell

pretty much the whole list

what anime do you get in America btw? - also I noticed Gurren Lagann is censored over here - the 'booby river' is just a pink neon strip :/
