Yeah, but Ikaruga is waaaaay too popular among shoot'em up beginners, so it clearly doesn't serve being a true "shmup" but a "puzzle" game.

Agreed. You just have to memorize which enemies are coming up next in order to score better. I don't see it as being any more of a puzzle game than any other memorizer. Is R-Type a puzzle game because you have to memorize the best route through environmental hazards?

Shmup fighter, Destrega for psx. A decent 3D fighter with an emphasis on fireball combat. Good for it's time, especially from Koei. Lots of charas, lots of long range attacks. The hand to hand sucked.

The Psychic Force series are similar to Destrega; they're more of projectile-combat fighters.

Tukai!! Slot Shooting for the Sega Saturn is a puzzle-shmup hybrid.

STG + full 3D sphere shooting action + mechs + kickass + cheesy live action acting = Press start, Omega Boost!

STG + Dungeon Crawler/Isometric game = Erst Kerf (and, what's better, it quite works!)

STG + Arkanoid = Touhou 1 ~ The Highly Responsive to Prayers (not sure this one was a good idea)

I wish there'd be more of these. There are few somewhat similar ones on PCE (Genji Tsushin Agedama and Veigues Tactical Gladiator) but I recall at least the former was kinda meh when I tried it way back when.

The NES version of Section Z added an exploration aspect to the game. There's branching paths at the end of each "section", which you needed to explore to find weapons, upgrade energy, and unlock certain paths. I always laughed about how touching a door without unlocking it first KILLS YOU.

Not really. Senko no Ronde (Wartech) on Arcade/Xbox360 is closer to SHMUPS + Fighting
he was talking about the Touhou games that actually are fighters: Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and the expansion pack for the latter; the Story Mode plays less like a fighting game arcade/story mode and more like a real shmup/fighting crossover

also Daemon Bride is a commercialized take on said Touhou games
What we need is a bullet hell game that generate itself automatically from any music file (MP3, OGG, name a few), a mechanism just like Audiosurf, but generates bullet pattern.

Latter stages of Nayukanoid get very very shooty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qEmI7q44Vk

Touhou fighters are a bit shooty in arcade single player. Also bosses for mystical chain.
Too many H-STGs to count.
All arena ones where you get melee weapons and some shooting stuff like PKA (pocket Kanon and Air), bosses especially.

weird genre crosses are fairly common in dojin soft, I await turn based STGs with utter amazement for anyone who could make that not suck.

the closest you're going to get to that is Knights in the Nightmare, or something like Archon but with shooting battles

I was just thinking of that last night. You could have to dodge bullets while waiting for your turn meter to refill so you could unleash your own danmaku spells. You could use the 4 face buttons as a d-pad for navving the menus and the triggers for select/cancel. The beauty part would be that unlike an RPG you don't get time to think about SHIT because you're having to multitask dodging and using spells. If you had to use heal spells and the like alongside offensive spells, man, you'd just be PRAYING for a long cutscene so you could rest your poor brain. I think it could work pretty well--if integrated competently.

It shares a few similarities with Puyo Puyo and the like. Not wholly superficial similarities either.

My pick: Dan Da Dan.

Not really any room for quibbling about this one, pretty straight genre mashup:

Fun game.
