Xbox 360 No Video - Need Help okplsthx

Post by shmuppyLove »

Just got a 360 Elite (with the built in HDMI) for free!! -- but since I don't have an HDTV, I'm trying to use a component video A/V cable I got some time ago that was bundled with the Farmer component to VGA adapter.

Image

My CRT has component video input, interlaced only. I generally only use it for my DVD player, but I have used it with the same Farmer cable on my PS2 and Wii and it does work perfectly with those, but for some reason I can't get a picture out of the 360.

I've tried both the "HD" and "YPbPr" positions on the cable, and also resetting the 360 display settings (by holding Y and RT on startup). There is a flicker on the TV briefly when the console starts, and I can hear the dashboard launching and selection sounds, but no picture.

I think I might actually try the Farmer adapter next with my LCD monitor, but it would be nice if I could get an interlaced component video signal out of the 360. Has anyone had any luck doing this?

I've also ordered an S-video and VGA cable from eBay, they were ~$5 each shipped, so nothing to lose really. But those will likely take weeks to arrive.

Not sure what the problem with your cable is, but I do know that on real Xbox 360 component cables, the switch being set to SD forces 480i.

Ok so I tested the cable with the Farmer VGA adapter and doesn't work for the 360, but does with PS2, so maybe just that setting on cable unfortunately.

Looks like no 360 for me until the S-video or VGA cables arrive, or my friend finds the original A/V cable.

The other alternative is an HDMI to DVI dongle, but I'm using the DVI input on my monitor for my PC, so that's a bit of a pain.

Of course I could just get an HDTV as well

Ok thanks for confirming that. I figured as much, but maybe that cable isn't wired properly for it or something.

At this point I'd settle for composite

So I was able to confirm today that it's not the cable. I tried the 360 with an HDMI cable on an HDTV and also an original component HD cable, and same result -- it powers on and seems to work fine (can hear the dashboard sounds), but there's no video.

So who's got a good guide for repairing 360s?

If this guy is Japanese, I'd try repairing it or I can sell you my spare.

If this guy is local, I'd just go buy a X360s. They run cooler, quieter, and are generally 100% better than the older generation.

well if it would be broken it would rrod.

does your tv support 1080p ? your xbox might be set to 1080p output by the previous owner.

there is some way of resetting the video settings with some sort of key combination. google it.

Yeah there are no red lights, except for the video it seems to work perfectly.

My TV does not support 1080p (it's an SD CRT), but it was also tested on two different HDTVs with both HDMI and component video and still nothing.

Yes I tried the video settings reset, it's Y and RT during boot. Didn't work.

Apparently this unit had RROD before, but it was repaired and I have played on it myself in the past, so I know was working previously. The previous repair I think was pretty basic, the clamps were removed, Arctic Silver was applied and the fan was 12V modded (which is really fucking loud, I'd love to revert that if I can but I know how temperamental the older units can be).

I got it in trade for some manual labour, so it didn't really cost me anything. If I can't get it working, it's just going to have to be a bit of a bummer.

I had one do this. It's fairly uncommon, but does happen.

K so it runs perfectly fine out of the chassis.

Going to put it back in the chassis, but not fasten the screws on the bottom.

Baby steps ...

Edit: Ok it's in the chassis now, didn't put any of the screws back into the bottom, and so far it's ok.

Edit edit: So everything fully assembled, and seems to be good now. Now for some games ...
