Flak Attack flyer; can anyone filter any of the plot out?

I realize that for a 1987 game, there's probably not going to be much in the way of plot. Mostly me being curious as to whether Zeta X is your typical out-of-control AI or not (maybe it just gives the Bad Guys superhuman tactical coordination and reinforcement timing?). At least I was able to look up the katakana to find the boss names (Hell Destroyer, Mega Base, Metal Forest, Dark Horizon, Zeta X; at least Dark Horizon is a rather neat name to give an aircraft carrier boss).

Although there's the question of whether there's much in the way of legibility at the resolution used. Suffice to say that for a while, I wasn't sure whether the final boss was Zeta X or Zed X. At least until I decided that Zed would probably be rendered as ze-do, rather than ze-da.

Plot? Dunno.
I used to 1CC it when it was in the arcade. Starts very awkwardly but when you finally power up the laser its actually very smooth and playable.

This is funny, I was just showing this to Dave_K the other week. DEL is right, the first stage is wonky, but if it gets better I'll have to try it out. And I personally like the TF2 style perspective switching!

The plot is really only given on the first flyer. Don't get too excited  , here's what it says:

An evil empire plotting to take over the world...
Their main target, the country Rafuania, has its bases completely destroyed.
Then, a single advanced fighter that had been hidden in an underground storage takes flight.
Go, Eagle! Take back world peace!

Haha. Progear ripped this off! I didn't bother trying to fancy up the language for how it should sound in an 80s cheese English flyer. Rafuania btw, is extremely cloes to the Japanese spelling for Lithuania. The second page mainly describes the stages... not really any plot information there. It doesn't tell you about Zeta X, it just says "Zeta X, who controls the evil empire, what is his true form...?"

So basically, Zeta X *is* a kind of malevolent AI. Just one that actually finds common cause with a particular group of humans, not a bearer of omnihatred like, say, Duo from Varth.

(Wait, Lithuania...? Was Zeta X put in charge of some sort of USSR Mk. II? And we know what Reagan called the Soviet Communists...Except I'd expect something with a name like that to be based in Greece, except it would be called Zeta Xi or Zeta Chi instead...{gives up])

The first stage, by the way, should be a lot easier to work with once you realize you CAN stop the energy plumes rising up from the streets--you have to bomb where they're coming from while the plume is active.
