Saturn USB controller

Image

This thing is really great, and especially when you consider that it was only like $12 (including shipping). It feels exactly like a real Jap Saturn controller. I can't believe the quality of this thing. I've bought other USB gamepads for about this price that were absolute shit.

My only complaint is that the shoulder buttons are strangely clicky. I mean they really take a lot of force to depress. It's really bizarre given the fact that the rest of the controller so good. I'm considering buying some replacement right angle tact switches to swap in. My only fear is that I'll get some that don't require any less actuation force. Data sheets will list that, but I don't have tool to measure the existing switches.

Well, partly bought and partly made. Though not even really bought since they were free. Anyways, I got a bunch of "Express Mail Box" boxes from USPS, and turned them into PCB boxes!

For the steps I took, and more images, go to http://dodonpachi.daifukkat.su/pcbcase/

Yeah, the first two (Demon Front, then Soul Edge) were the ones where I was sorta messing around to try to find the best method (I ended up ruining one box in-between Demon Front and Soul Edge, as I was trying to make it look a bit cleaner).

The instructions I wrote were what I ended up using on the last 3.

Definitely much better looking than the old "pile of PCBs" organization :D

You should really store your games vertically though as gravity is kinder to them then.

Yep. A lot of times games will now include flipside covers without the labels. Does Rayman have one?

Have them stacked upright. Gravity causes boards to sag and puts strains on the traces/chip sockets etc - but it's really more of an issue if you have PCB feet on them (you shouldn't have, get rid of them.)

If you use a supergun or PCBs go in your cab horizontally (Egret I, for example) you should definitely put feet on them.

I have a PCB holder affixed to the wooden board in my EII. I'm definitely not suggesting anyone lays them on a metal surface. :o

New Dream Pad arrived for hacking

Image

I'm going to test and make sure it works first this time

Also, the programming/remapping feature of this pad is intriguing. I want to see if there's some way I can maintain that functionality in the stick. Shouldn't be too hard to attach a spare button, maybe the back button since the Dreamcast only has a Start button anyway. Might be able to relocate the indicator LED somewhere as well.

The dream pads are nice. Ive got a couple hacked for my dc to jamma setup. not having the trigger lag makes them well worth hunting down.

@Necronopticous

where did you get that plastic slip case for super famicom boxes?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I actually discovered these from a post earlier in this thread:

Incredibly low prices, and the product itself is great.

Have you got some pics of your padhacks? I'd love to see some other examples.

Oh, cool... that looks authentic as hell! I wonder if there's anything similar for Jackal (also FDS-only in Japan), I'm considering just biting the bullet and getting a NES cart + convertor to play that one.

There are cart conversions of japanese FDS Jackal (inferior version imho) and famicom cart conversions of the US version Jackal, however I've never seen one with the custom box & instructions treatment. Probably just mass produced pirates, not hobbyist customs.

Interesting, thanks for the confirmation - guess I'll just get the NES one in that case, a conversion wouldn't be nearly as charming without the attention to detail on that Dracula II. I'd forgotten about the gameplay differences as well!
