Not "Buying" Diablo III Because I Don't Like Getting Raped
Using the term buying loosely, as you don't really buy this game; all assests are on the server and you can't play it offline, even in single player mode. You can't resell it either (activation code). For me, the process of buying leads to owning, which obviously doesn't apply here. I am also appalled by the the fact that the game features a real-world currency auction system for in-game items. That's just wrong.
Re: Not "Buying" Diablo III Because I Don't Like Getting Raped
I don't give a damn about the game

1) How come people didn't cry about this when Starcraft II came out? Why not as much as now? Same shit, no wonder Blizz got away with it.
2) The auction house is entirely optional, like fries in mcdonalds. Let the people do whatever they fucking want, you can't change them. Even threads like this will not change them. Nothing can change humans, not even world wars could. So give up on preaching brother.
3) You are a complete moron if you buy such games at launch because they will be bug-ridden and will require months of fixes. Correction, YOU ARE A COMPLETE moron if you buy any new game above 40 bucks at launch.
Notice, this is not aimed at you, but at the people in general. That said I am not touching the game.

Re: Not "Buying" Diablo III Because I Don't Like Getting Raped
I have made a decision to never buy any Capcom games, nor any Ubisoft or EA games, due to their ridiculous price gouging and DRM bullshittery. I never was really that into any of Blizzard's games, but I was somewhat thinking about getting this. Now that I've heard about the horrible DRM bullshit going on with it, there's no chance of that in my future. There's a chance I'll pirate it if I really want to play it (if that's possible; I'm sure some dedicated Russian hackers will get it eventually), but there's literally 0 possibility of me "buying" this mess as-is.
I didn't know about this, I guess Blizzard is now also on my list of "companies to never buy anything from". Not like I ever had any of their games before anyways.Kaiser wrote: 1) How come people didn't cry about this when Starcraft II came out? Why not as much as now? I don't care if the auction system is optional, it shouldn't be there.
Didn't "buy" that one either.Kaiser wrote: 1) How come people didn't cry about this when Starcraft II came out? Why not as much as now? Same shit, no wonder Blizz got away with it.
Re: Not "Buying" Diablo III Because I Don't Like Getting Raped
In the interest of "sticking it to the man" I would definitely love to see this game get hacked and pirated

Re: Not "Buying" Diablo III Because I Don't Like Getting Raped
I don't care about the game.
I don't get it... at all??!? What's the appeal? I tried to play Diablo way back but fell asleep while doing so. Tried Diablo 2 in 2007. It was fun because I played it with 3 friends, but after completing the game and the expansion I just couldn't keep playing/grinding for weapons. I don't understand how people can keep playing the game after completing it? It's a grind fest, doing the same thing over and over and over forever to get better items to beat the enemies you've already killed so many times.

Bah, I was going to write something about how nobody really owns their games, only the right to use the software, and the license agreement includes details about transferring those rights to someone else etc etc but I just got up and I haven't finished my coffee yet.

I was interested in D3 but the DRM totally killed it for me. Watching people waiting in queue to play singleplayer, along with experiencing warping and lag, is reason enough to justify my decision.

The login issues were fucking rage inducing, but hopefully in a day or two it'll settle down.
For the record, I'm not putting that forward as a justification, there shouldn't be any problems at all.

The word rape does not apply to anything Blizzard could possibly be doing to you.
Re: Not "Buying" Diablo III Because I Don't Like Getting Raped
My two bits:
I'm going out later today to buy Diablo 3. I am doing so because while I don't like the constantly required internet connection, the fact is that I always intend to be playing the game online anyways. You can say what you want about rights and ownership, but at the end of the day I'm not paying $60 to buy a game, I'm spending $60 for hundreds of hours of fun with my good friends. Some of whom I've not hung out with or played a game with in sometime. To me that is far more important than whether or not I "own" the game.
Do I like that the publishers are making it harder to actually own a games these days? Absolutely not. I'm a die hard game collector and I want to be able to play my games forever, but the bottom line is that the experience you get from a game is always more important than having a hunk of plastic on a shelf. Cash comes and goes, but good times with friends are something worth cherishing.
Besides, when it comes time to archive the game for histories sake there will undoubtedly be a pirate copy that I can then backup and keep forever without any guilt.

The casual misuse of the word 'rape' to apply to something absolutely inconsequential is one of the most lamentable sociolinguistic developments of recent years.

I thought it would be really cool, but then the internets told me it's not. Now I'm like, "meh", and I move on to something better. Blizzard games haven't been my thing since the original Starcraft anyway.

Re: Not "Buying" Diablo III Because I Don't Like Getting Raped
They've been good about overshooting their development window and losing sales to "hype fatigue" lately.
My plan was to play the starter edition (also known as Diablo 2) until such time as they have a $20 battlechest with two or more expansions, or they make it completely free to play.
Considering the standard for RMT games is free to play, it'll happen someday, right? (This is me making an obtuse joke internets.)
While SC2 will never sale as much units as SC1, they'll probably eventually drain the lizard sufficiently to make it more profitable in the long tail..

Or the English language. Rape isn't just about violent sexual assault. The also means to pillage, plunder or abuse, which is the definition I believe the OP was after. Definitely dramatic, but for the argument he's trying to make it's not an unacceptable term.BryanM wrote:I see you're not a big Diablo fan.The casual misuse of the word 'rape' to apply to something absolutely inconsequential is one of the most lamentable sociolinguistic developments of recent years.

Their metacritic got a bombardment from frustrated fans who couldn't log in after they bought the game, even to play the single player campaign. Apparently even the single player game is played on Blizzard's servers .. what the hell kind of retarded design decision is that?

If you are always connected there is a better chance you will spend real world money on microtransactions. I imagine they would probably say it has something to do with piracy if you asked them though.

Rape is most commonly referred to non-consensual sex or to liken something to non-consensual sex. Regardless of any intention to use the word in an archaic, outmoded sense, the result is still the same: it cheapens a word and it reinforces already strong prejudices.njiska wrote:Or the English language. ANYWAY giving people the option of paying to play a game hardly equates to 'abuse'. Are you 'pillaged' when you shove a quid into an arcade cabinet only to not be allowed to take the PCB with you when you leave?
Re: Not "Buying" Diablo III Because I Don't Like Getting Raped
The rmt is sacrosanct. They can deign to allow you to puddle around in SC2 for a couple of days uncoupled from their machine. They absolutely can't allow you to have the D3 server, because, there's no win for their profit machine there. RMT security/maximizing the population, etc.
Why not make a real MMO mode, like with Mythos's overworld? Why only four players at a time? Same reason it's $60: fuck you is why.
Let's not get into the metaphor wars, please. By nature, they're designed to make us look stupid.

Most commonly does not mean solely. Criticizing someone for using a word correctly because it can also have a different meaning is just ludicrous. Next you'll be telling me I can't refer to something being strange, odd or unusual as being queer, because queer can also be a slur. This is ignoring the fact that the term rape is being used less to describe forced sexual intercourse in favour of the broader term sexual assault.MX7 wrote:Rape is most commonly referred to non-consensual sex or to liken something to non-consensual sex. Part of me was all like "Oh man, I could totally just play Diablo 3 and sell shit for money because these are the same retards who would pay $1000 for a WoW mount just because it's rare!"
Part of me wants to play because literally all my gamer-friends are playing.
Then I realized my computer can't even run it. I could get a new computer, but from watching my friend play, it doesn't really look like much fun/much challenge... and I'd honestly rather play PSO to get my mindless XP/rare loot grind fix because at least it's somewhat difficult on Ultimate in Episodes 2 and 4. >.>

You should assume you'll still need internet plus whatever console internet tax is floating around these days to play it.Cuilan wrote:I'm waiting for the console port. I'm also a very patient person.
Considering the amount of bottage and 3rd worldage and everyone else doing it, you'll probably have to play for many, many hundreds of hours to make your buck o' sixty back.CaptainRansom wrote:"Oh man, I could totally just play Diablo 3 and sell shit for money because these are the same retards who would pay $1000 for a WoW mount just because it's rare!"
I installed SC2 (which lets you play a demo via "starter edition") and can sort of play it with my computer:Then I realized my computer can't even run it. I could get a new computer, but from watching my friend play, it doesn't really look like much fun/much challenge...

I had a video card (which I bought specifically for SC2+D3, years before the internet DRM crap was announced), but it died on me last year. SC2 runs on something like 15fps with my mighty Intel 82915G integrated graphics chip. And everyone looks like they have down's syndrome.
Funwise, it's more of the same: pump out guys. Attack-move. Some things are much nicer (supply depots can be sunk in the ground, no caps on group size, pathing will make stationary guys MOVE OUT OF THE WAY), and there's some silliness (the lead dev's Mary Sue units, the "macro" mechanics).
I expect more of the same from D3: D2 without having Detroit as act 3 and meaningful mana regen in the early game, minus the whole being able to select your own skills as you level thing.
As of now, it's more or less a wash: maybe a modest improvement, but they take forever to install (this is my 2nd attempt to install D3 in safe mode ffs) and take forever to load.
By the time the battlechest is out, I'm sure the average crap heap you can get off discountpc.net will run them zippity doodah with integrated graphics that can handle actual shaders and the ansible will be invented to fix most of those internewt related woes. They'd be good value by then.
