I agree, the character specific threads are very welcoming to players of all skills. Re: I DID IT
It finally clicked with me and I was able to see the gaps in the bullet patterns instead of the bullets themselves...
I mean, in a rational way it was clear to me, that in order to get out of tricky patterns, I'd have to seek free spots in the barrages of bullets... But it somehow never sunk in. What happened now, is that my perception changed, I don't see the bullets anymore, but the free spots between them.
It's like those images where there are two things, like an old and a young woman, but you can only see one image...
It's quite a revelation to experience this not only on a rational, but on a perceptional level.
Hope this new "point of view" stays.

That's interesting that you just mentioned that as that's a feeling i got recently and even was thinking of posting about it yesterday. I've had these moments before, and especially recently, where I notice that my focus shifts to the patterns between bullets rather than the bullets themselves. Sort of like seeing lanes and roadmaps out of the dence bullet formations. I also notice that when I try extra hard to see in this way, it seems to have the opposite effect - I can't help but just see a swarm of bullets. In other words it's almost an intuition than something you can consciously impose on the experience.
This makes sense as anyone who has ever developed a skill, especially one that requires fast timing and decision making, notices that when you are performing your best, you find you are not really thinking at all, but rather it seems your muscles just know what to do independently of you. Of course, that's just how it seems because the brain is obviously sending those messages after a period of learning. I suppose there comes a time in which conscious processing is too slow and reflexes take over in order to "solve the problem" efficiently. Nonetheless, when you experience it, it feels like a breakthrough. It should be a sign that you are getting better, that your brain is starting to map out common patterns.

Might be a good idea not to involve yourself in things you don't know the history behind, Mr. Noob. Obscura is pretty much a guy who's made a name for himself coming here and bitching about how hard even some of the easiest games in the genre are all the while acting as if playing shmups is some sort of self torture method for him. That post in question wasn't made for the sake of putting him down for sucking; it was what I honestly believe would be the best decision for him to make. I also think it's worth pointing out that aside from being annoying and ignorant as hell he hasn't contributed a dime to this genre as he refuses to buy a 360 or any of the official ports and just plays everything on slowpoke MAME. So anybody care to explain why I'm such a bad guy for advising him to quit?Yeah, that's what's qulloquially known as "polishing a turd." There is plenty of space for constructive criticism, but this kind of behavior ultimately hurts the culture of a gaming community. I saw this with fighting games a few years ago where the top 5% scared off tons of potential newcomers (and, very often, all females) by acting like the one thing they don't completely suck at in life is completely untouchable except by the innately gifted few.
Imagine if you want to go ice skating and while you are stumbling everywhere but having a good time trying, some douche skates by every loop and blurts out passive-aggressive zingers like " look at me! I'm really bad at this but im at least twice as good as you!"..... WOOSH.. "I mean, really, try doing something that avoids using your lower torso!". ... WOOSH... "OH look, you didn't fall in the last 5 minutes, don't mistaken this for progress because you are either shit-for-life, or a natural by birthright.. Guess which one you are?"
In other words it's tiring and although I'm new here I did not expect half of the posts I'm interested in to devolve into this guy's attention-grabbing tactics (guilty for giving in!). I'm hoping a girl just left him or something but if he's always like this I'm reconsidering the value of starting a topic when I know it will just end like this one.
Bullshit. Plenty of times in the past and to an extent I still do offer insight and encouragement. The thing is most of the time it's gotten ignored whereas I can just come here, blow off some steam, and be guaranteed 4 or 5 replies next time I check back. It all just proves what I've said in the past. People would rather hide behind this "natural talent" bullshit than actually put forth the kind of time and effort required to get good. This board is all about teh drama. It's not about hurt feelings. It's about a guy who *might* have good advice, but by being a complete asshole he manages that nobody wants to listen to him.
This type of shit has no place here.
So fucking what if the dude *only* plays Mame? I didn't realize that playing shooters has prerequisites! At least the dude is playing. So what if he posted looking for attention? You fucking GAVE him attention.
I think that you, sir, are all about the drama.
I don't know you from anybody, and the "history" as you put it is irrelevant. Your comments are and were grade-a douchebag material.
This guy is the type who'd volunteer to work a suicide crisis hotline, then try his damndest to get people to fuckin' do it.
No offense meant, just exercising my freedom to state my opinion. I'll just leave this here:
Gus, you act like a mean fat kid in gradeschool who beats up on smaller kids because HIS life is shitty. Your outlook is pathetic at best, and while you sure seem to get people riled up with your douchebag attitude, in our hearts we know that maybe you had a tough childhood, or maybe your mom refused to breastfeed you, or maybe you had an unfortunate run-in with a Catholic priest - whatever chip you have on your shoulder is yours to carry. Just stop shitting in every thread you enter. I've seen THREE THREADS IN A ROW derailed (and in some cases locked) due to your comments and the backlash thereof.
To the OP:
Sorry about assface up there - it's great to hear you're making progress. Feel's GOOD doesn't it!!!
Congratulations on your 1-All...I'm still working on mine, (Should I just quit? I'm not sure if I'm worthy to even play STGs anymore, after reading this thread

Re: I DID IT

Finally passed the 100mil mile marker, wasn't even really focusing on score attack. I think it was actually my only run yesterday. Died in the beehive section of 1-5...that stage is really making a mess of me, I need to get on studying some replays.
EDIT:
Might switch to Type B...just got 122mil first time using it. Not sure if it was because of the ship or not. Got significantly further in 1-5 that time, could have had it if not for 2 unforced errors in 1-4 :/

10 mil mark in Raiden Fighters yaaaaaaaaay
I'm seriously reconsidering the difficulty position of the series overall though. JET feels heaps easier for me than the first does.

I need to get a 1-all out of the way, I've come too close too many times. Then I'll start working on a st3 chain and fixing the hole in my st2 route.

Re: I DID IT
Your advice on stage 2 and chaining the end of stage 1 helped a ton! I couldn't get your route for the start of stage 1 to work consistently, though; I tended to either drop the chain while misdirecting the shots from the power-up carrier or drop the chain because I went through the popcorn too fast and killed the large ship too early. However, while experimenting with it, I did find something that makes the route I was using a lot more consistent!
Quick question: do you have any tricks for dealing with the section in stage 4 after the large cannon, with the cannons-on-rails that slide back-and-forth and rain stars when killed? I've figured out that bottom of the screen in that section = dying (pretty common theme in general...), but I haven't found anything that consistently allows me to not bomb there. One problem I'm finding is that staying under those things when they move to keep lasering them causes the popcorn to shoot all over the damn place since I'm moving so much, which in turn creates giant screen-filling walls.

Re: I DID IT
Unfortunately I don't have a consistent method for that section yet. Most of the time it ends up being a lot closer than I'd like, but the times that it works out seem to be the times that I dodge more aggressively and try to stay closer to the turrets. Thinking about it now I have a feeling it has something to do with directing the shots of the popcorn by being higher up the screen and at a sharper angle relative to them. If you get close enough to the turrets you dump enough bullets into them that they'll still go down relatively quickly if you have to switch to shot to get some of the popcorn. But yeah I dunno, I'd be interested myself to hear ideas from someone more experienced on this section.
Don't worry too much about misdirecting the shots from that first carrier in st1, I just kind of hop left and the timing works out that he fires just then. I wish I could get replays sorted out because I'm sure it'd make a lot more sense if I could just show you. Either way if you found a path that's working for you that's all that matters in the end.

Nice! Is that Original or Special?
I loved that game until I started trying to milk Jupiter without any practice modes or anything. Shit drove me mad.

I'm sure this is at least partially because I just played the game for the first time last night, but, at least in the non-special version, Jupiter is a bitch even if you don't try to milk him.

Re: I DID IT
Yeah, its a pretty difficult fight, lots of parts to destroy.
Milking him is such a bitch though, all about moving into safespots and only shooting specific parts of him. I was really hooked on Batsugun Special until I tried to milk that boss for the 12m he can be worth in each loop.
Its not even hard, I just can't practice it efficiently enough to get consistant, and it takes so damn long to get to him.
I always thought the 2nd boss was the hardest in the game, moreso than the last boss even.

The second boss is a lot easier IMO if you use type A, since it means the popcorn dies faster, so the holes between his volleys are less likely to get plugged.

Ah, I always used the chick, I think she is Type B, just because she gets those little homing shots, which are really useful in milking the front propellers off of Jupiter.
Oddly, I can't even remember the 3rd boss, he must have been uneventful.
