Just no miss cleared Raiden Fighters 2!

Post by Rastan78 »

Sorry for the superfluous thread, just had to share since a new 1cc for me is a rare thing.

I had gotten Red Eye down to within seconds of dying and blew it a couple times before finally pulling it off. I was using the fairy which is probably the most powerful ship, so it's not like I cleared it with the Eraser or one of the tougher ships to use, but hey still an arcade 1cc. Also, still got a long way to go score wise. I finished with about 58 mill. which is still under 50% of the world record (playing the JPN 1 loop revision).

Anybody else still into RF2?

I wish these games where emulated properly. I have Raiden Fighters 1,2, Jet, and Viper - Phase 1 in my extra roms folder. Sigh...

Viper Phase 1 is actually one of my favorite arcades of all time. The only problem i ever had with it is the whole start over back in time thing they pull on you after clearing the main game. Man, i used to pump some damn quarters into that machine.

I remember once i saved money for like a month just so i could go to Blazing Flippers after school and beat that game - then i got halfway through my money when i 'beat it' and had to start over at the beginning in an even harder version - dammit!

Anyway - still love the feel of that game though... and those green napalm explosions are so satisfying. :)

Good, i'd say.I know that anything abov 90M involves scratching, so good luck for future improvements

Thanks, guys.

Just finished it a second time but got 71 mill. I think I'll just try to work in the rest of the micluses, fairies, and destroyed at a time bonuses for now. By then I should be comfortable enough to start working in a bit more scratching.

It's actually pretty easy to scratch with the fairy because the hit box is essentially the sprite itself and the scratching box is a large imaginary box around the sprite.

Some of the ships' hit boxes look absolutely painful to do scratching with i.e. a very large hit box with only a small surrounding area that includes maybe just a wingtip or thin edge of the fuselage. I'd assume this explains part of the reason why the fairy has by far the highest world record.

Also the fairy's bomb doesn't cancel bullets and can be used to create invincibility. Basically, you can sit in an area of highly concentrated fire and let bullets graze off you while the bomb burns. One place on stage six you can leave a bunch of tanks and turrets on the screen at once and then burn off at least five bombs in a row while extra points rack up.

Nice progression too, congrats...i think that 90M are doable, no?

Well, looks like I've got to go for it. Actually, my long term goal for the game is to break 100M but don't expect me to pull it off any time soon.

Like with many shooters scoring opportunities will get exponentially smaller and more difficult to obtain until the point where you're doing the near impossible for smaller and smaller point gains, not to mention dying and ruining entire runs trying to squeeze more points. 90-100M seems reasonable (gulp) for me in the long run if I can stick with it.

A few years back, I managed to buy a SP1 cart of Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. off eBay for a mere $20 USD. I already had an USA Bios region SP1 motherboard and was looking for VP1 cart anyways.

IIRC, a long time ago, Alamone cleared RF2 with about 90mil+ using the Flying Ray, and for the most part it was just straight scoring. He did take some bulletscratching opportunities in early levels though.

The best thing to do is to keep an eye out for bonuses, because a lot of them are elusive (like the Destroyed At A Time x2 + Discovered The Fairy at the very beginning of Violet Head's stage, from the four large turrets that are spread across the screen). And use bombs to access some of these bonuses, as they are plentiful, and the extra points you get for surplus are not worth it in the long run.

Just edited the topic to reflect that I pulled off the no miss. Ended up having four bombs to spare as well. Having a no miss clear is definitely a first for me in the realm of arcade shooting. High score is now only up to just under 77 mill. but I just had to get the 1 life thing done just for the sake of doing it before focusing again on score.

@Icarus: I know about all the bonuses and stuff it's just that I'm still a little timid about chasing some of them because you really have to stick your neck out and play aggressively to get them all. The fairy's unique flame thrower bomb makes everything a bit different. Some things are easier, but some are a lot harder i.e. the 3 defended the tank bonuses on stage 1 and all of the destroyed at a times on violet head's stage.
