Old Gamers book series in Japan

Post by greg »

I've recently discovered a great book series called Old Gamers at a local book store. Have any of you other guys found this book series?. They cover games for the Famicom, Super Famicom, Megadrive, and PC Engine! For everyone else, if you want to you can import them from Amazon Japan, and I've provided links below.

Volume 1 covers games like Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, Bonk, Ice Climber, etc.

Volume 2 covers role playing games! Dragon Quest, Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Torneko no Daibouken, you name it.

Volume 3 contains simulation adventure games, my favorite these days! This covers games like Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre, Nectaris (Military Madness), and even games like Graduation and Tokimeki Memorial.

Volume 4 is all about shooting games and puzzle games: shmups like Gradius and Gunhed (Blazing Lasers), chase-view shooters like Afterburner and Space Harrier, gun games like Duck Hunt (although I was disappointed to see very little attention paid to Wild Guns), and of course puzzle games like Tetris and Puyo Puyo.

Volume 5 features sports games and racing games. I may not bother picking this up, since I am not a big fan of either genre (though I do have my favorites).

So far I've bought volume 3 and 4. Maybe I'll make a video of these someday.

They're for sale on my site. Great series, and several people have ordered. Bested only by the "Arcade Gamers".

Yea I dig em too. I also really like the Old Gamers Saga series that covers console games from certain eras. I have all the mid to late 90s ones. Some good nostalgia, plus a few games I wasn't aware of that look pretty sharp.

I was under the impression these were kinda turdish. I've started to lose all hope even in the underground publications. Continue was the best magazine ever... and now it's shit. :(

I've heard people say these Old Gamers books were pretty much just glorified wikipedia entries with nothing really new for those in the know, but personally, pretty much any printed media about my favorite era of games is hard to pass up.

Speaking of, I've been mulling over recollecting old issues of Gamest. I got a ton of them when I did my study abroad and went through the nightmare of shipping them back to the States, but now that I'm settled in Tokyo again (and just a bike ride away from Mandarake), I'm feeling the urge to grab a few back issues.
