Abit of landscaping and chopping wood in my back yard
Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
Had to abort a hike halfway in yesterday due to SUDDEN FIERCE RAIN and enough clouds rolling in to make waiting it out look like a bad idea. Ended up sitting out in my friend's carport drinking beer and eating chorizo-and-pepper-stuffed-potatoes, topped with sour cream, cheese and crumbled bacon. Hopefully the abbreviated activity still managed to cancel out the food & drink. But hey, at least everything took place outside.

Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
Just got back from the hike I planned yesterday. My feet are really really sore. :/
I'm kinda depressed now for some reason. I need to find someone to go with ne on these treks, but all my friends are lazy couch potatoes.
I'll talk more about it later I'm exhausted. Going to eat then sleep.

Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
Being a harrcore lazy couch potato myself, I'm thinkin' you wouldn't wanna bring someone who doesn't want to be there in the first place. You need to start a hiking group or some s***. Begin with that geologist chick: ask her if she can help you round up other people who are actually interested and aren't lazy couch potatoes. It's, like, the perfect pretext to show interest in her

Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
ha that's a good idea. I stopped by the office on the way home and asked her to pick me up from the main gate so I could get water and eat inside. I was pretty out of it, but did eat lunch with her and shared my pictures.
I ran out of water on the summit and didn't want to drink from the spring, due to the heavy cattle traffic in the area.
Here are some pictures from the hike.
The peak was covered in MILLIONS of lady bugs. (sorry, I don't know the correct name.) There was a Geo-Cache at the peak too. I left my cheap sunglasses at the peak with my initials and date. The geologist said there are also fossils there, something to do with the limestone. I'm ignorant of earth's history and geo-sciences, so I can't comment.
gah, I'm spamming this thread.

Took kids park for a few hours, then fucked my ankle up doing naked star jumps on the boy's trampoline. It's gone black and hurts like shit.

Well our transport arrangements fell through and now the whole camping trip is off. I was really looking forward to being on the highest point in England. I guess we'll go back to the peak district instead.

A crashed WWII bomber 10 miles northwest of Nevada/Oregon bordertown Denio
http://www.opb.org/programs/ofg/segments/view/1574
I've been to it once before when I was 14 or something, but rode a motorcycle to it. I crashed pretty hard and got stuck at the bottom of the hill so I never got to see the wreckage. I'm now considering hiking to it, which shouldn't be too bad. My friend's parents own a house in Denio that would make it easy to establish as a base camp. I probably won't do it this week, it's too cold out right now. (i'm going to end up being attacked by a mountain lion)
I'm heading south tomorrow anyways, after I get my fucking mountain bike fixed, again.
edit: mt. bike will have to wait. The mechanic is gone for a week. goddammit.

I've been flying RC out at the club field whenever possible, which has mostly been Sundays the past few weeks. I need to get a set of wheels for my skates.

Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
I went hiking at Mt. Diablo Wednesday... the falls trail, nicely flowing after all this rain, highly recommended to bay area folks. Might do Meridian Gap or Mt. Olympia this weekend before "Game of Thrones" night with friends.
I used to do a ton of cycling before my knee went bad. Bike touring was my favorite and one of the hardest things to give up. My poor, unused Surly LHT...

Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
I walked down the street to return a DVD at the redbox....
...decided to walk the bike path roundabout way home and ended up inspired to go on a 10K. Problem was since I didn't plan on it and was wearing hightops, ouch.
The highlight was just before the halfway point right before turning around. A dog was barking at me from a house I was passing, within a moment a Kindergarden age kid came biking down from the house to me screaming "Ticket, Ticket, Ticket!!!". I pretended to look for a ticket in my pockets and told him I must use forgot it somewhere. He corrected me, "Nooooo, I'm giving YOU a ticket!". I reached out and took the imaginary ticket and thanked him. By then his older brother arrived, both of them were really good at riding their bikes, they said they ride on the bike trail every day! They rode down the path in a hurry and stopped about fifty feet in front of me, when I got to them they started screaming, "Ticket please!". This was clearly something they do often. I took a short breather on a nearby bench while they were verifying my invisible ticket. Turns out the older boy attends the school I work at and recognized me which was pretty cool.

Damn 10k?
I average about 3.5 mi on my running days. I have a long ways to go to get that endurance. Or maybe I just need to pace myself.
I was supposed to go on a bike ride with the geologist, but got ditched, again. So I went on a ride up the mountain. I thought I would be able to get to the top, but I was a bit overconfident. The downhill was really fast. I missed a corner and banged my knee against the bars. Goddamn.

21 mile bike ride with a 1000'+ descent/climb
I went all the way to the airport for chocolate milk and a veggie quiche.
The trails still have too much snow to ride them

Do stuff outside? You mean when you take your handheld console outside and play on it? But there's so much glare...
Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
Snuck in a round of golf yesterday morning. Realized tonight that my neck is red. Ah, the joy of the sun.

Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
For the last few weekends I have been riding my mountain bike again, hoping to get back into shape a bit.
When I bought it in '99, it was set up as a cross-country bike for very short people (<13" seat tube). I put beefy parts on it and used it for trials - heavy parts include a DMR Sidekick rigid fork which weighs as much as some suspension forks, and a wide downhill rear wheel. In the last 2 or 3 years I have gone back to riding cross country and some road, so I was hoping to lighten up a bit for an easier ride.
I checked my local bike store but it seems like nobody carries rigid forks anymore, and lightening up the rear wheel probably isn't worth my money either. So my bike is going to stay a 33 lbs fully rigid pig, I guess I'll get more exercise this way.
Just to show how long I have been out of the loop, when the Hell did 29" wheels become popular? I hadn't heard of such a thing until last week when I went on eBay looking for a fork.

Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
The weather has been awesome this weekend so I got some overdue work done. Replaced a friend's busted gutter drain pipe and added an angled piece to the end to direct the flow into a rain barrel. Also spent a good chunk of time today trying to remove a birds nest from my laundry room's exhaust pipe. Failed to get it all out, but at least I have a piece of mesh across it now so the bird can't get back in.
Now to start grilling a nice steak dinner and drinking an 8% beer.

Haha, I don't run, I walk. 10k is only 6.2m, it takes me about 1.5 hours. I did it 4 times this week! Unfortunately I smoke and teach dance, so running is out of the question mainly because I can't risk long term knee issues.mesh control wrote:Damn 10k?![]()

I need to figure out how to burn calories more efficiently though, burning 3500 cal only equals 1pound loss, so I'd have to walk a SHIT TON to loose any weight. Or I could give up peanut butter

Re: Shmups SPRING/SUMMER thread: Do Stuff Outside
On Saturday I did 60 miles on my most inappropriate bike.
There were a couple of steep descents on the route which is entertaining on a fixed bike with quite a low gear, even more so with the ridiculous position I have on this one. I could only reach a little over a speed of 30mph/cadence of 150rpm before I couldn't keep up with the pedals but it felt insane. The climbs were shit and I had to walk the hardest while wishing I had different bars and/or clipless pedals but at least that meant I got to watch one of the guys on a proper road bike wheelie up the whole damn thing.

I did a mini-triathlon on Friday morning. 600m swim, then a 10.5 km bike ride and a 2km run. And that was after going on a 5.1 km run on Thursday night at 4am. I was kind of tired after. Sucked going to work.
