So often I'm not into anime, so here's my offbeat recommendation: Just discovered there's yet another Lupin the third series, and this time it seems like they really nailed it. Awesome animation, the CG is extremely well integrated and never feels intrusive. The style is done to look like the original comic. The new series is called Fujiko Mine (and she is basically the main character, but of course Lupin will show up), and the first three episodes are on Funimation. Makes me want to go back and watch Castle of Cagliostro, but while I love that movie, it isn't a very good representation of Lupin.

watched episode 26 of LOTGH (the end of the first 'season') - my god the importance of the character that get's killed off would make even early Tomino wince :p

I was waiting for when you finally got to that - you having watched the Gaiden series first I'm sure the impact was even greater. I watched the main series first (the Gaidens weren't fansubbed at that time yet) and it still made me  and

haha yeah the gaidens and films I watched before the main OVAs definitely made it a lot more shocking and indeed sad :/

I think I might take a break from all the intensity of LOTGH (you actually have to think when you watch it ffs!) and continue watching SDF Macross for a bit of light relief...

You must lead a fulfilled life to know it.

I wouldn't mind hearing the original Japanese line.

I can't stop rewatching this scene in SDF Macross, ridiculous and brilliant on so many levels, comparing this to what happened to Chief Tyrol in (modern) BSG when he was exposed for about 2 seconds makes it even more funny:

about 10 minutes into Venus Wars...

really, really like the art, animation/frames are so smooth and detailed - realy like the Metal Slug type feel to the military stuff too, I'm really bad at knowing names of anime directors/artists etc. - is there any other anime by the artists/team that did this I should check out (preferably sci-fi or space opera) ?

the painted backgrounds are incredible too

The manga artist has had at least two series translated by Viz and/or Dark Horse comics. One was for The Venus Wars and the other was about the Kurdish rebellion in northern Iraq and south east Turkey (I ferget the name of it at the moment). His designs look familiar because they were used for the video covers of Takachiho Haruka's Dirty Pair and Crusher Joe (sort of the same way Takada Akemi would do cover and chara illustrations for other famous series). I don't know diddly about the anime director. I thought The Venus Wars was a little too long, but it was one of the first anime movies I saw on teevee.

Finished Venus Wars - enjoyed it from start to finish, though it may have been a little long and they probably should have had them joining the army (and therefore more cool battles) early on.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but the original seventies Captain Harlock series is getting a complete DVD set for the first time in the US. Really looking forward to this as a fan of Matsumoto stuff.

It's going to be subtltled only, too. I'm glad they're not going to desecrate it with a dub, but that might not even be possible to do, with something so old.

Yeah, I don't know how I missed this. I thought I "liked" Discotek on Facebook, but I guess not. They do some pretty stellar releases, and the rest of their anime lineup is absolutely phenomenal.

Been waiting for this for a long time - I wil definitely be picking this up!
Also grabbed Armitage III, Dominion Tank Police, Bubblegum Crash and Kishin Corps yesterday - on VHS. :D I so dig early 1990's anime. Watched Armitage III last night and its a solid 8.5 out of 10 - cyberpunk setting, moody, fantastic. Reminds me of getting these tapes back when they came out, most were like $50-100 a pop and watching one felt like an event. Those were such good years for anime.

I live next to a shop that selling a LOT of old anime for 100 yen each per tape. I remember they have Venus Wars and the entire Gundam 0083 series.. Want me to pick up anything and throw it in your package? I can go there tomorrow morning and see whats left. Might be worth it just for the cover art.. haha.. throw the tapes away and save space/weight.

watching episode 16 of SDF Macross - 'Phantasm' really interesting approach to using old footage, where instead of it being a simple clips episode, it's a dream where the script and meaning has changed, man I can't help but love 'My Boyfriend Is A Pilot'...

finished SDF Macross really enjoyed it, though I really wish he had just ignored Minmai from WAY earlier on and gone with Lt. Hayase >:|

I got into the art more as it went along but I never started to like the design of the Zentradi ships - they looked like guerkins!

I loved the design of the VFX-1 (of course) but I kinda didn't like the inconsistency of how they were drawm, still overall I loved the series

I would deffo recommend Patlabor 3: WXIII, while not quite as brilliant as Patlabor II, still amazing and I think the tragic story of the monster's genus is actually better than the OVA it is (admittedly loosely) based on...

I avoided watching and buying this movie for a long time: 1) The DVD cover made it look like that horrible Appleseed CG crapfest, 2) it wasn't directed by Oshii Mamoru, and 3) it is the cheepest PatLabor DVD in the market (and that made me circumspect as to how people who bought it got rid of it right away) 8)

Changing the subject:

Does anyone know where I can buy anime and animu OSTs, whether official Japanese releases or bootlegs from Taiwan (e.g., SM)? I got a hankerin' for some Ranma and Maison Ikkoku OSTs 8)

yep I have to admit I held back from watching it for a while as I didn't want it to tarnish my love for Patlabor. Although it isn't directed by Oshii, it certainly feels like an Oshii film to me from my limited knowledge (even if this is just 'apeing', I still like it). It has lots of the ambient music and panning shots sorta feel, and it is FULL of mallet instruments and soothing dreamy pads...

finished Macross Zero I didn't find it unpleasant, but it didn't feel very 'Macrossy' to me, some of the art was incredible, but patchy in other parts imo (the textures on the 'birdman' for example) and although I know a kinda 'love conquers all' message is of course in the original SDF Macross the way it was done in this just seemed so vague and well, crap tbh. It even reminded me of Lagrange ffs in feel at times :/

Macross Zero seems to suffer from the same thing that OAVs and other animation from the time had: lacklustre CG and chara designs. I didn't even bother looking into the series once I saw all that s***** CG 8)

yeah for me it wasn't so much that I disliked the CG in and of itself, but it was the characters faces that I did'nt like - esp. Fokker he ended up looking like he had as much personality as a mop. Is the reason some of the character design gets so sterile because at the time they were starting to use more digital techniques and tweening etc., and also stuff like whereas you may have had to for example do different drawings as things moved away etc., these were all unecessay now? - if anyone can make any sense of what I'm trying to say I'm impressed :p

I obviously do like CG in general with this name, but from what I've checked out (and admittedly it isn't very much), there definitely does seem to be a lack of soul or feeling in a lot of the art post the advent of widescale digital techniques...

Anime has gotten better in terms of serving up smooth-as-f*** animation quality, but the chara designs are total s***. It makes me glad I gave up collecting in the mid-90s 'cause I managed to avoid all that trash at the time it was being brought over to the U.S. Man, I hate seeing some really fake-looking, stilted CG mecha pretty much pasted on top of hand-drawn stuff. It looks retarded

I blame that piece of s*** animu Neon Genesis Evangina. That one was a major change in quality of anime 8)
