What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
So I booted this up for the first time in a few months. I got a very interesting surprise, and not a good one. There's a scrambled rainbow pattern that just scrolls from left to right (in vert orientation). Anybody know what might be up? The board is running without a battery currently and I haven't touched the switch on the board.
Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
Has it been in it's metal case?
I've heard of people having weird problems with their Doj PCBs after removing the battery. Mine has a battery in it but I am about to go power it up

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
Yep, it's been in it's metal case since I got it last year. When I got it the battery was already removed. I don't see any visual evidence of corrosion damage and the board ran fine for a few months in my Windy cab. After going unused for a few months I plugged it back in and got this ugly mess.robivy64 wrote:Has it been in it's metal case?

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
Just tested mine (also hasn't been powered on in months) and all is well, although mine has a new battery. Can you post a photo of what it's doing?
Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
Yikes, hope this works out for you.
When I owned my DOJ PCB I was the one that actually removed the battery. Had it for months without a battery and if you had yours running for many months without the battery on it I doubt if there was any corrosive material left from a spent battery it would have taken this long to eat any valuable traces, but I'm not an expert.
Have you adjusted your +5v on your cab (or supergun) at any time in between when you last played your DOJ board and now?

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
Yes I have adjusted the +5v since it last ran in the cabinet. My Ketsui board runs fine where the PS is set now (between 4.99 and 5.08 depending on the pcb) so I don't see why my DOJ board would have problems.Vyxx wrote:Yikes, hope this works out for you.

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
I double checked my cabinet and the +5v apparently jumps up a bit with my PGM boards. When I adjusted my power supplies a few weeks ago I used a few boards to test. There was about a .09 separation on the +5v between the high and low so I set it at 4.99-5.08. Shoulda used a PGM board in there as that setting caused a 5.15v on that line.Vyxx wrote:Yikes, hope this works out for you.

I will say that I adjusted UP to that setting so DOJ was likely running at LESS than 5.10v at the previous setting. The lower setting that DOJ ran at before combined with the fact that my Ketsui board didn't fry at 5.15v makes me believe the power supply wasn't the cause of this. I tried lower voltages and DOJ still has the same problem.

I should add that there's some kind of high-pitched feedback from either the monitor or power supply, sounds more like it's coming from the monitor. I thought it was coming out of the speakers at first, but the sound is inside of the cabinet.

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
I'd double check the traces on the board anywhere closeish to the battery spot with a magnifying glass. If the battery died then was removed, the fluid may still have been on the PCB and eaten tracks.
I'd also try it in another cab/supergun just in case there is a difference. These boards are usually quite tollerant to 5v fluctuations in my experience though.
Otherwise I'd hit up channelmaniac with a PM about getting it looked at. There's not much else that often fails on these boards.

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
I did try it in other cabs and there was no success. Pretty positive that this wasn't PS related now. I will take a closer look at the traces with a magnifying glass, looks like the pcb itself has a very slight discoloration in the battery area so you might be on to something there. I certainly have intentions of contacting CM at some point.RetroRepair wrote:I'd double check the traces on the board anywhere closeish to the battery spot with a magnifying glass. Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
For Noah,
Did you try swapping out your modded DOJ BL eprom & replacing it with the original DOJ v100 eprom to see if that revives it?
I think that'd be a minor issue at best. Of course, I'm using a DDP-DOJ PCB with an original metal case setup + backup battery installed + the aforementioned DOJ BL conversion eprom (for the high score saving functionality perk).

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
Where do I get the code to burn to eprom for the high score saving? I have the DOJ BL conversion eprom but it doesn't save scores? I do have a new battery installed. Also does this mean high score saving is possible for Ketsui and Espgaluda?PC Engine Fan X! wrote:I'm using a DDP-DOJ PCB with an original metal case setup + backup battery installed + the aforementioned DOJ BL conversion eprom (for the high score saving functionality perk).

Thanks!
Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
If you have the conversion ROM with high score saving, it's very possible that your EEPROM for high score data got corrupted. If you run the original ROM without high score saving, it should clear it up. You can then put the conversion ROM back on, and everything should be all good.

Yep, the original v100 rom results in the same mess.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:For Noah,

That's not going to be anything simple or trivial - repair job. The 5.15 may well have been the cause too.

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread that I adjusted UP to the level that caused a 5.15 on PGM boards AFTER I pulled my DOJ board from the cab. DOJ was running at a voltage that was likely under 5.10.system11 wrote:That's not going to be anything simple or trivial - repair job. The 5.15 may well have been the cause too.
Channelmaniac will be looking at the board likely next month or so.
Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
Did you look at this blog post? It has a suggestion for a Ketsui fix when using no battery.
http://arcadefever.blogspot.com/2010/01 ... olved.html
I wonder if this would fix NVram corruption with the highscore save black label conversion.
Shouldn't there be highscore save roms for Ketsui and Espgaluda soon?

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
I know we have already developed Ketsui high-score-saving patches, but I don't think we bothered with espgal. I should release that patch sometime soon...

Why no love for Espgaluda? That is one of my favorite shmups.
Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
We were more interested in Ketsui and DOJ at the time (and still mostly are). And I haven't really been in the RE mood lately (hence the lack of Ketsui Arrange 1.5 release still).

Re: What the f*ck just happened to my DOJ pcb!!??
I've tested the Ketsui save on a PCB and it works fine.
As for the DOJ PCB. You could try the oldest revision ROM revision of DOJ, try to enter the test menu and factory reset. Hopefully it hasn't died like a few of the others.
edit, just noticed that it's the same thread as on AO. disregard the above, sorry.
