Isn't this what MUGEN is for?
Re: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
You know, the SSB gameplay and style worked because everything was cartooney and cute Nintendo kiddie shit. Watching grimdark Sony characters bounce around like just looks wrong, like a 32 year old man cosplaying as Sailor Moon while giggling like a schoolgirl >_>

I think this'll be pretty sweet if they get the fight mechanics and online right.
That's two coin tosses for sure.

I think the online can't be worse than Brawl (from what I heard about Brawl, didn't play it much and never online).DJ Incompetent wrote:I think this'll be pretty sweet if they get the fight mechanics and online right.

The mechanics just look worse period. Essentially just building up meter for instakill attacks seems like a pretty awful idea and not a patch on Smash Bros' weight-loss plan.

Sly cooper's lvl 3 = bad game design.
Much worse than I expected.

Re: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
I heard somebody say "what's wrong w/ a smash clone?" to which I thought "clones are perfectly acceptable from smaller studios, but something more is expected from a behemoth like Sony." I've done little research other than skimming over some announcements. Is this truly as weak as it seems (smash w/ Sony properties)?

Maybe because of poor results from Sony?

Re: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
There's pretty much two possible ways this could go: A cheap Smash Bros. knock-off or an expensive Smash Bros. knock-off. Either way, it's a knock-off. Nonetheless, expect plenty of fanboy wars when it comes out...
Re: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
I'm soo hyped for this... mainly because Smash Bros has disappointed me in the past with horrible online play. Looking to fill the empty party fighter void with this release this holiday.
The whole no life bar and super kills is a bit out of the ordinary to me but makes sense. Each player is racing to charge up their supers first to knock out the other players. In order to do so players will have to attack to gain attack points and avoid taking damage to reduce their attack points. It actually really interesting. The best thing to come out of this is eliminating the turtle and lame strategy.
I remember in Smash when playing stocked players will run away and avoid the fight while the other three players duke it out to their last stock. Then the dude who hid away on top of a ledge for the entire match decides to join the fight with full stock over the guy on his last one. Dude who chickened out the entire game wins. Can you call the dude who did nothing all match the champion? That can be argued but with the whole idea of whoever works the hardest to fill their bar first gets to decide on who gets knocked out seems to eliminate the whole turtle and lame strategy. It's an incentive to fight and race to the top instead of turtle your way to victory. I actually really like this idea and hope it turns out to be a good one.
I'm looking to hear more good news about this title as time gets closer to release date

Re: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
This is as bad or worse - attacks do zero damage as of right now. They just build meter. Specials are instant kills to any character - in fact, the only kill you can make are instant kills. These apply equally to all characters, no matter how well or badly they've been playing. So if you haven't been hit once in the game and somebody hits you with a super, it's the same as if you got whaled on the whole time. One player could build up their meter to level 3 just hitting one player, then turn around and wipe out everybody else except the player they were just hitting. Said punching bag has lost exactly nothing, as no damage has accrued.Shelcoof wrote:I'm soo hyped for this... mainly because Smash Bros has disappointed me in the past with horrible online play. You only lose attack points from getting hit by weapons and environmental obstacles right now. EDIT: Wait, no, a couple of characters at least have certain moves that knock those orbs out of other players. But it's not standard attacks. fyi.
My understanding is that this is just one mode and there will be others though. A damage meter of some description is going to be in one of the modes apparently.

But I disagree though about the current mode being just as bad or worse. People are so use to the idea of having health points deplete but instead of health points you gain attack points. Every successful attack you make gains you attack meter. Just think of the attack meter as health and think of every successful attack you make as gaining more life in the battle. So if a player is reaching the goal of getting a meter it's up to the players to stop him or her. The whole game is a race to the finish, which I think is a good. This pushes the action vs having players run away from the action to retain life.
If your saying it's not fair to the player who got knocked out on his first it, I'd argue he could have avoided it by being the first to get the first meter. If he gets the first meter, who is going to go after him now seeing how he has the advantage to knock anyone out who tries. There's a lot more things that come to play if you really look at it.
I honestly think though if they do this right it could be really enjoyable here. Think people should really give them a chance.
Added:
The point you raised about a player beating on one guy and gaining meter then taking out the rest of the other players. I'd argue the other players who see that happening should step in and gang up on the player who is doing it. It's all strategy which I think could be very fun and interesting.
Also would like to bring up my example of playing 4 players, having one guy run the whole time while the other three duke it out. Then that one guy who ran the whole time decides to come back to the battle when there is only one opponent left with very little life left while his life remains close to full. He then takes the win easily. That can be just as bad if you look at it that way.

Eh, just a personal opinion, really. I'm just a big fan of traditional 2D fighters. Don't really dig the arena thing/random health bar.Shelcoof wrote:What makes smash bros bad?drauch wrote:If Smash Bros. wasn't bad enough. This looks a thousand times awful.

Does SSMB have random Henry VIII decals in ITS stages? No, go sit down.
I think the only characters I could recognize were Sly (I GUESS) and tha rappa. Can't really read the silhouettes at a distance, which is bad if you're trying to play this type of game for real. Who is that fat dude with polka pants?

Fair enough, I can respect that. I'm a big fan of 2d Fighters as well but I also love 3D Fighters and other multilayer games. I see Battle Royale as a nice change from your traditional or non traditional 2D fighter.drauch wrote:Eh, just a personal opinion, really. I'm just a big fan of traditional 2D fighters. I mean look at all the upcoming 2D fighters that just came out and are coming out this year along with some upcoming 3D fighter releases. Then you get one party fighter and everyone is hating on it like the market is flooded with too many of them.
Not including handheld release, last I remembered the PS2 had Battle Stadium DON, Dream Carnival and Dream Mix TV World Fighters. Then you have Brawl most recent release of a party fighter from what I can recall. That's like 4 compared to the rest of the fighting games available.

Re: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
We need some Tekken characters in this mofo, as well as Time Crisis' Wild Dog and a Raptor from Razing Storm. Tekken? Yeah, it has been one of the PS family's big franchises historically, even if it's lately crossed the line onto Xbox 360. I'd bring over Jin, Nina, and Jack from T6.
It'd probably be fun to bulldoze a challenger with a Raptor ram attack, or take him with Wild Dog's twin 357s.
Just imagine Wild Dog grabbing one opponent with his TC4 gravity gun, spinning him around for a second, then hurling the victim at another target.

Re: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
...and now imagine Microsoft trying to make a game like this.

Re: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
I, for one, think Sony have enough good characters to pad out a roster for a fighting game. Patapons, Parappa, Tomba, Robbit, Vibri, that animu girl from Gravity Daze/Rush (who has kinda grown on me), Ape Escape monkeys etc. Not at all bad. If you can have a Cho Aniki fighter with a logo as a character, this can work.
Unfortunately, most of their currently marketable characters are the worst ones they have and are just crappy characters in general. Cole, Killzone guy, Kratos, Sweet Tooth ... bottom of the pile stuff here. Sweet Tooth belongs to a shittier, nineties-er era. I guess Drake is an ok character in his own environment, but he's just a caucasian with a gun here.
