Ibara Scanlation - Chapter 1 and 2

Post by rancor »

I did a translation of the first 16 pages (chapter 1) of the Ibara manga. Not sure how much interest there is in this, but I can continue on with the next chapter if there's any interest.

It's in .cbz format, so you'll need a reader. You can download the file here.

If you're willing to eventually translate every chapter, I would have great interest in the project.

I'd certainly be interested in reading more. Also, a quick Google inquiry told me that you can change the .ctz file extension to .zip after downloading it and use WinZip or whatever to get at it, so that made things a tad easier for me. :)

If possible, though, a translation of at least some of the sound effects might be nice too (not a huge deal, as it's generally pretty obvious what's going on there, but I always find the Japanese versions of various onomatopoeia interesting) - also, is that the maximum image size manageable? Some details can be a tad tough to make out.

Either way, thanks!

I wanted to interfere with the art as little as possible - thats why I didnt put in sound effects or words that had nothing to do with the text/dialog. As for the maximum image size, I thought about that for a long time. I suppose I could do bigger scans for the next chapter. I tried to keep each page at around 120k, and thought that would be plenty big enough - but I'll do larger next time.

It's awesome that you're translating this. If I may, some suggestions that might help improve future work:
  • It's better to erase text in word bubbles using the rubber stamp tool to duplicate whatever color and paper texture they're filled in with. Failing that, you could use the eyedrop tool to actually sample the color and use whatever technique you're using now with that color rather than plain white - though this technique would fail to pick up the little paper grains as you're probably not doing significant amounts of scan cleanup. The plain white erase marks are sort of distracting from the sample page here.
  • You may want to try a smaller font that only contains capital letters, and don't worry about trying to fill in every last bit of empty space in the word bubble (choose a consistent font size and don't alter unless the original does). A lot of people doing scanlations like to use a font called "Anime Ace". It helps the text look cleaner and makes the work in general flow better.

I don't think filesize should be much of a concern in this day and age though...

That makes sense, but would it be a possibility to include a small .txt file or something with a page-by-page listing of the sound effects inside the archive? I remember reading an English-language manga or two years ago that left the sound effects untouched but instead listed the Romanized sounds panel by panel inside the back cover.

That's a fair amount of extra work though, and not super-necessary, so just take the suggestion with a grain of salt. :)

Another bit of extra work, but you could do "low-res" and "high-res" variations and post both if you were worried that some people might have trouble with the larger files.

I haven't forgotten about this - I'm working on it almost daily, and will soon be finished with chapter 2.
I have taken some of the above suggestions into account. The scans are now larger, and I'm going to use that font that Starcreator suggested (he's always a big help with these projects I undertake). I'll also try using the "rubber stamp" tool rather than the technique I was using before. I may even go back and correct the previous pages.. I dunno.. It all depends on the time / sleepiness factor.. I went to bed at 9:00pm last night and got nothing done... :? That means tonight I'll be working on this, as well as packing items sold from the shop late into the night..

Finished translating and scanning chapter 2, but I just don't have the time lately to paste the English over the Japanese scans.. Anyone else interested in doing this? Otherwise it may be a few more weeks until I can get this out.

Thanks for yet another great translation effort rancor!

I was going through some cave stuff and found 4 Ibara SWF (FLASH) files. I can upload them if there is any interest.

Hey I have the Ibara comic/flyer with the "0th" story (similar to chp1), you can add it to your translation some time if you want. Scans here if anyone wants them:

Anybody want to take over this project? I have chapter 2 fully scanned and translated, but I really cant be working on scanlations while I'm at the office.. haha. All you would need to do is take my scans and paste the text into the word balloons. Easy enough for anyone to do, I just don't have the time. PM me or reply here if you're interested.

I could do it. I've done stuff like it in the past. I'd be willing to make a cleaner version of chapter 1, too.

Chapter two done.

Get it in high quality (and filesize) here, or in not massive picture size here. No cbz files because I have no idea how that file type works.

They work like regular zip-/rar-files. Just rename the ending from .rar to .cbr (or .cbz if its a .zip) and you're good.
