Valve is very different from practically every company in terms of culture and policies. That doesn't mean anything with regards to simply using their service.spadgy wrote:Steam and Cave are very different companies in terms of company culture and such
Aside from any potential interest in the PC as a platform, there's the question of cost with regards to a PC port. I think a previous interview mentioned it being around $400,000 USD for either a Xbox 360 or iOS port with the artwork being re-done in a higher resolution. If they were already making a port to one of those platforms, I wonder about how much extra it would be to target the PC beyond that. They should have OpenGL ES and DirectX experience from their iOS and 360 ports, and I can't imagine there being a whole lot of additional work to be done for either OS X or Windows.
As for when I'd realistically expect Cave to port their games to the PC, I'd say 8 o'clock:

Re: How would you feel about PC releases of Cave games?
Cave are probably scared to enter the pc market (not too many japanese companies have: capcom, sega have to name a few). I think cave would be pleasently surprised with the end result, if their willing to try it in the first place.

Re: How would you feel about PC releases of Cave games?
What kind of DRM does Steam have? Depending on that, I may or may not ever buy a game on there. I don't agree with having to login online unless the game features online play. I can play all my other PC games whether I'm tethered to an internet connection, or stranded on a plane or train or bus or roach motel or even at home if I couldn't afford internet that month. I'd be much more likely to buy a download code off CAVE's own website or whatever. I don't give a shit about having a physical copy provided I can redownload it from the website or back it up myself. But that's just my personal opinion and if someone else wants to buy their games on any service or platform I don't use, that's great for them and I hope they enjoy the games and that Cave makes some cheddar. I have plenty of friends that use Steam. If that makes the games less available to me as a more finicky consumer, that's cool, it's not like I can't find another shmup to play. I've never even played a Cave game because I don't have or want a 360 or iPhone. Gundemonium Collection is available on PSN and Steam and is also available pirated online, and most good companies seem to stay afloat regardless of piracy, although it's obvious that if something comes out and it's easy to pirate plenty of people will play it for free. I pirated Minecraft, having no idea if I'd like the game or not, and then payed for a legit copy a month or so later because it was a good game and I wanted to support the company. It's nice to be able to do that, keeps me from wasting money on crap.
And anyone truly worried about the leaderboards being TAS-hacked should really get a life. Who gives a shit if your high score doesn't look as high because someone cheated? Nobody even plays shmups, it's not like your high score in a game nobody's ever heard of is gonna get you laid. You wouldn't even need TAS to cheat, you could just run the game on a really shitty computer so it plays in slow-mo the whole time. But there's more important things to worry about, for instance did you know there are starving kids in Africa who've never even PLAYED an STG?
Also to the OP, it's not really a big deal to send a PM to some people but I'm not surprised that out of the 400+ people you PM'd, some of them were pissed off, the odds dictate that it's bound to happen. Maybe you should just stick to forum posts if you don't want people to rage at you.

On PC there are always small stupid things that make it lag, miss inputs, drop frames (or have some too many
)... so purists would hate.
BUT, the more the merrier, this would be a fantastic opportunity for people with less access to imports (or not the money to invest in foreign hardware) to at least enjoy bullet hell in all it s... err... hell.
PC would be easier to mod, have a little games mix, MMP/PSW or Ketsupachi style. On arcade, in later games, everything is packed so tightly that injecting a boss code inside rom without the source project is an utmost chore.

MAME doesn't have region locking, allows the games to be played on any PC and with any controller, allows for backups, and it's not necessary to spend several hundred dollars on a Japanese system that many people don't consider to be a worthwhile investment.Ed Oscuro wrote:Systems with a chance of persisting > systems without a chance of persisting > MAME (sorry MAME guys, I love MAME)cools wrote:Let's get more ports so we can all bitch about bugs that never get fixed, screenmodes that don't fit our lowres CRTs, input lag and slowdown inaccuracies. Voted yes, but I wouldn't double dip on any PAL / RF 360 games I have unless they added something extra. Save state pratice with 3 second invunerabilty or MMP & PS with that bloody pre order dlc would be nice.

People will spend money for your product as long as it provides good quality and service. If it doesn't, then they won't.

Re: How would you feel about PC releases of Cave games?
Modding is probably a big issue with CAVE cos it makes selling their masuri / blue / black version PCBs even harder. I wonder if CAVE think of PC ports with steam sales and piracy as devaluing their games too much? Ok theres MAME but most mainstream gamers on steam dont use it or can be bothered getting it set up.BarfHappy wrote:PC would be easier to mod, have a little games mix, MMP/PSW or Ketsupachi style. I don't do any kind of on-line or computer gaming, nor have I ever played on-line or used a computer for gaming. I prefer hard copies of games with a printed manual and a box for a console, although it'd be awersome to have access to the arcade version

It should be easier for them to push out patches since they don't have to deal with the patch certification process that they have to do on Xbox with PC's being an open platform but yeah Japanese devs rarely get how to use PC's.emphatic wrote:

Re: How would you feel about PC releases of Cave games?
I did a quick calculation while back when I heard about deathsmiles cracking 100000 sales worldwide a while back. It should be around $3,000,000 in profits or so, not counting other related assets (arcade, iOS, memorabilia). That's pretty tidy for just a single release and a rather large catalogue supporting it on various platforms nowadays. I think ios and x360 has opened a lot up for Cave, but I tend to agree that they may want to focus on puting development costs towards the most likely sources of revenue, and it doesnt seem to me that Pc is it right now.BPzeBanshee wrote:I thought their 360 ports were reeling in quite the good amount of cash. Look at Mushihimesama HD's Limited Edition. With the amount of enthusiasts buying that there's no way in hell they'll go bankrupt.
I like this idea a fair bit though the issues of PC are indeed considerable. If the iOS ports are going strong though I don't see why they can't expand. I voted for the first option.
I'm not surownow I see cave being in financial trouble considering the avenues opening for them and successful recent ports. Yes, arcades are dwindling, but their fan base and revenues should be maturing and growing after a brief dip a few years ago with the said reduced arcade revenues. It's all about adapting. And that's why I, unlike some, believe getting into the iOS market is a very good sign for the company and how forward thinking they are willing to be. That's the most important part, going forward.

Well, yes and no. Unfortunately history has been witness to many failing despite having great products. So much goes into beyond the actual product, including financial management, marketing, etc.Nasirosuchus wrote:People will spend money for your product as long as it provides good quality and service. I would hope to think that Cave is as sharp and savvy as they seem to be. Certainly, their rate of recent activity is a good sign.
Re: How would you feel about PC releases of Cave games?
id definantly buy the PC ports depending on what they were priced at of course
