Cuz they're cheap and you can get them anywhere. A fresh logitech pad is fine for platformers and slower shmups (cleared Touhou 8 normal with one), although they do wear out quickly. Bestbuy has a 60 day return policy, open or unopened, so for awhile I would just exchange my pad for a new one every couple months, until I finally got a decent wired 360 pad.

I heard Bunny Must Die and Chelesea and the 7 Devils are good platformer games. FYI Rockin' Android is translating both games. Hopefully it won't be overprice.

So is the Classic Controller Pro, pair it with a USB adapter and you're good to go.

The upside is that it's a good, comfortable gamepad.

Yeah, that's what I ended up with too.

Hey, while we're talking and I don't want to make another thread, Recettear's dungeon crawling element is actually pretty good. Anyone know of other doujin diablo-esque games?

So what's up with this on the last page? It didn't sound like you tried it.
Moniker wrote:You guys have any luck getting a controller to work with TK? My 360 controller doesn't even register, and my logitech pad slows the game down to a crawl.

ISTR running into a similar problem with a gamemaker game. Damned if I can remember the fix, though.
If you're having trouble with the CCP+adapter combo, you can cycle through the modes on it with HOME + L/R. One of them will make the d-pad send inputs as the left stick, and it works in every doujin game I've tried.

This was before I realized gamepad adapters were affordable and available from mainstream (online) retailers. For the longest time I'd never buy any hardware unless I could check it out in person first. Just giving a reasonable account of why logitech pads get a lot of business. *shrug*

Anyway, thanks for that tip - will certainly cut down on the xpadder finagling.

Hopelessly naive question:

Are there any doujin platformers that play like Black Tiger or similar older titles?

I'd be interested in that as well. The only one I'm aware of is the bonus stage after beating Nezumiman, which is a Ghosts n Goblins tribute. I've played one or two old-school Castlevania clones, though I can't remember the names offhand. The vast majority are Megaman style games.

How "old school" are we talking about? Anything that's not a Metroid-vania game?

Yeah, they were like classic linear 8- & 16-bit castlevanias. One was Zangyura. I'll have to hunt down the other one. Pretty sure it was a touhou fangame.

Edit: quick google search yielded Houkaimura, a SGnG clone from the MiniShoterRS guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4imRIErMsw
Looks pretty lofi but might be worth checking out.

I previously mentioned Touhou Koumajou Densetsu II: Stranger's Requiem. It's rather well made, has a nice OST, is fully voiced, and various Touhou characters that pop up as stage bosses will end up functioning like sub items. It also features what is the most badass design for Marisa that I've ever seen:

EDIT: Forgot to mention, there's also an official English patch.

It's just one game. The game is named Chelsea must beat the 7 devils, Bunny Must Die and Chelsea and the 7 Devils are the names of Bunny's and Chelsea's respective storylines in the game. Indeed a great game.

Akuji the Demon is another little freeware Metroidvania well worth taking a look at.
