As a general framing for my setup, I'm looking to get the main bases covered initially, but I will most likely end up with multiple setups down the road, so if something doesn't cover the more advanced scenarios but will be long term useful, that's actually fine for me right now (and if it's easier to use to get up to speed with stuff that'd be cool too)
As a first step I'm trying to just capture video from my cabinets and either stream or record it. The video input will be anything from crazy refresh shmups to my PS3 for fighting games. Initially I care more about the "normal" cases (mainstream pcb and ps3). I'd prefer the hardware requirements for the computer to be somewhat low, so something like the hauppage with the hardware encoder seems like it might be ideal? I also already have a thin client with each cabinet, so if I can hook stuff up to that that'd be amazing (though I think they're going to be running linux, does anything support that? osx support would also be nice since I can get those computers from work more easily)
My longer term stretch goals are the following:
- "streaming" to monitors that are a ways away (i.e. too far away to run a monitor cable, but big monitors and easy bandwidth, probably with a mac mini, will normal streaming setups be able to stream something that doesn't look like crap on a 30" monitor?)
- video analysis on the attached computer (i'd like to do things like parse the score and see if I should save someone's replay. I'm mostly looking for some way to get a clean frame to the computer every five seconds or something for this? Seems like a hardware encoder would be pretty bad for trying to do this)
Again, apologies if this is already covered somewhere, I did try to do my homework but didn't find anyone with close enough constraints...
