From the trailers, Red Tails looks very shmuppy. Even the poster could easily be from a game...

You could say that as well.

For me Gunbuster was good, but it marked the beginning of a steady decline. The fatality was delivered by a steaming pile of dog shit pooped out in 1994 called "Plastic Little". Starting with that film and continuing until the present day, all anime is dead to me. haha.. With that being said, I do enjoy the occasional episode of Conan on network TV.
Just like GP - I totally agree. There are some standouts story wise (I thought Gunslinger Girl was pretty good) but mostly, the artwork and fanservice just turn me off. CG sucks.

Also about 31:30, after Isamu regains control of his YF-19 DAT HITBOX lolololll

OAV Exper Zenon from 1991 has a Last Starfighter premise. It seems like it was a Laserdisc only release. Nice arcade sequence at the beginning, but sadly no subs (I found a torrent for another file with subs, but it's dead...anyone have a script lying around?)

Star wars and Battlestar Galactica have shmup-like scenes.

(Honestly I don't watch Battlestar Galactica, but I saw a commercial that was shmuppy)

When it comes to shmup scenes inserted into movies, it's hard to beat Ice Pirates.

This movie definitely has a shoot-'em-up thing going for it on some dogfight scenes. I also like the WWI setting 8)

The action scenes in Mamoru Oshii's The Sky Crawlers remind me of shmups like Under Defeat and Battle Garegga. The airplane designs are also very Gareggesque.

The best thing about Plastic Little is where she point blanks that guy at the end and shoots him right in the face. Several times. Cathartic.
