Wouldn't really make a difference. Modern PCs are vastly more powerful than modern consoles, but it's not like people refuse to use PS3s or 360s. Or Wiis, and they're even worse. Power isn't the only thing people care about.
Companies like Cave wouldn't even be able to take advantage of it, anyway. They could get rid of slowdown, yeah, but that's it. They don't have the skills or the money to take advantage of all that extra power.

Every post-1999 Cave game looks tacky as hell (Futari is borderline) and has a boring soundtrack. Ugly games aren't anything new from them.

There are some weird design choices though, like the fonts, hud and the hyper bar to the side. Plus the usual NUMBER EVERYWHERE IN THIS BITCH flashiness. meh, i'm just nitpicking. The game looks fun and the only shmup I play for aesthetics anymore is RSG.

Let's see here.

Muchi Muchi Pork is very fun looking, very unique.

Deathsmiles is gorgeous.

Progear has a very different look to it, which works and looks fantastic.

Pink Sweets is quirky and fun looking.

Akai Katana has some of the best visuals in a shooter that I've ever seen.

ESPGaluda 2 - beautiful, ESPGaluda, looks fantastic.

DFK and DFK BL - amazing!

What are you even talking about?

Those aren't opinions either.

Maybe this is their new grim future; not gritty military dystopia but super clean graphic designer's iDystopia.

...probably they just thought it looked good though.

There's a lot I like the look of gameplay wise. Difficult is good in my book, and their were some individual sections I thought were cool, for example the battleship bit (and just before it) on stage 3. Also really like the nods to DOJ which are very recognisable but stop just short of being the exact same thing over again.

Not so keen on: very long last stage, although I expected it to be there, and the cut-ins and the operator that won't shut up. "It seems you're damaging the enemy" "The enemy is attacking you" yes I can fucking see that thank you. I think it's aimed at some new generation of gamers who, weaned on overlong tutorials, can only understand what's happening if a cute girl explains it for them.

I think the graphics look cool. It's the music though that I don't think fits very well. I prefer the guitar riffs from Dodonpachi.

I liked DOJ's graphic, but I would gladly take super clean over dirty, gritty grimdark any day

Yeah, the tone matters. But if the gameplay is great, then it will make up for it.

Pretty sure they are.
I agree Espgaluda 1 & 2, Akai Katana, DFK and Progear (although that's kind of cheating, since Capcom lent a hand) are the nicer batch, but Mesh has a valid point, many Cave games do look tacky. A lot the graphical detail in their modern shmups looks like it's made out of crinkly sweet wrappers. Some of Deathsmiles CG is fugly (dragons, cyclops, dogs... most popcorn enemies actually... and that cow) and the backgrounds vary between being pleasant (graveyard, forest, volcano) to paper cut-out pain (halloween town, train.)

Pixel art to CG is like movies going from hand built sets to CG, it's just never as nice. :(

Livestream is fucking terrible. Justin.tv would be ideal, there's a reason why all FPS tournaments and fighting game tournaments are hosted there.

Deathsmiles, MMP, PS, DFK and DFK BL are very nice looking games.

So is Ibara... It has a very nice feel to it.

You must be blind not to see the effort put into the Detahsmiles atmosphere. It's a wonderful experience and great eye candy with awesome music.

What's wrong with Pork?

Sweets?

It's definitely got atmosphere, no doubt about it: it's the graphical assets that leave a lot to be desired. The volcano stage is pretty lush top to bottom, including the boss, but then the background of the train stage is horribly flat, as is Halloween Town, which is just drawn at a low resolution and blown up to end up looking poor. The CG character modelling is really bad for the most part, and the color schemes of the enemies are nasty as it gets. Far too much reliance on low end CG artistry ends up clashing with the nicer bits, like the cathedral at the end. For me it just comes across rough looking, unlike EspII which has a much more polished overall design and finish.

PS, MMP and Ibara aren't so clashy, but they're heavy on the CG. Ibara has the most cohesive look of the three for me.

DFK, AK, EspI+II all look great tho, no arguments, the best since SH1.

I actually think everything was straight-up fine until Futari (barring Ibara's stage-end business, and Pink Sweets which is obviously supposed to be absurd although it's fine if you don't like that), and that's when the prerendered look and brightness started to get distracting. In Futari it's mostly just the bosses though that don't quite seem to match up with everything else. Deathsmiles has some cool underlying design but it was pretty much pixelated puke on arcade and looks like Donkey Kong Country in high-res on 360. DFK has a whole lotta neon but at least it has a nighttime stage and SDOJ is this close to being Pink Sweets 2 except that's giving it a compliment it doesn't deserve. Especially since there's not enough pink for that.

Oh, I like how YOS.K's video description says "Really, I wonder if this is even possible to clear?" Keep in mind this guy has no trouble with Pink Sweets.
