Need suggestions for an arcade game!!

Post by kemical »

Ok, I'm likely going to be donating my old cab to a girl I know thats moving in with 2 other chicks, they like games and think the arcade would be badass, problem is I need to pick a game, and before I force a vert shooter upon them I'd like to hear any other suggestions for games that have good replayability etc..
Vert games are a plus too since I'm not sure how easily the monitor will rotate and mount horiz.

so far I'm thinking stuff like contra / super contra, or possibly TMNT, although the US version is only 4 players.. or some type of side scroller. Maybe bad dudes or two crude dudes haha... ninja gaiden, double dragon... etc

the more amusing and weird/80's the better...

Was also thinking of putting Terra Cresta back in the cab, although it's a bit too old school I think.. and I'd like to find something for 2 players.

Maybe they'd like a versus puzzle game, like Bust a Move or something? Just throwing stuff out there...

Well, Ms. Pacman and Galaga are always winners... same with a lot of other old games like Centipede, Burgertime, Tapper, Donkey Kong, etc. I don't think any of those are JAMMA though.

Hmmm.. Gauntlet 2 maybe? Not vertical, but classic, and fun. Great for 2 players as well.

well, i cant rotate the monitor, it wont fit in the cabinet horizontally unless I cut some wood off from the mounts and stuff.. kinda sucks, I'll take another look tonight though.

so its gotta be a vertical game!

not sure what to get now, definitely does not need to be girly as in cutesy stuff..
just trying to avoid shooters for now unless they are really easy or set on easy but with lots of levels (like varth maybe)..

but something like super dodgeball (the old one, not the neo) would be far more enjoyable since its 2 players.. that would be the best choice probably.

and if I go with some type of shooter its gotta have high score saving 8)

Is the monitor mounted directly to the wood without a frame? Most frames (even in the USA) use perfectly square mounting points. It may just look like it won't fit.

it's got a monitor frame around it, the holes for sitting vertically are a couple inches further than the horizontal ones, and the actual monitor tube won't fit in horizontally because of the original wooden parts on the cabinet (was a williams make trax), only enough room for it to fit vertically.
I could modify it a bit but I really don't want to go to all the trouble lol.

Dig Dug.

That's the first vertical non-shmup that comes to mind.
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

ah yes, varth, good choice. I think girl like this since once a girl joined after looking me play for a while. This has never happened with any other shooter. This must have something to do with the fact that this game is rather easy and colorful, but not to "silly cute" to turn normal females off.

Also if you play two player you can play the gentleman by shielding her with your smart pods.

Any dodge ball stuff is also good, but for that I recommend the NES (or NES emulation), there are many more kunio kun (the same line with the dodgeball game) games, offering much more variety.

Varth is realtively easy, but you must tell them to use smart pods! if you select fixed pods, the games' rank system activates. (the game assumes experts pick fixed pods and beginnerspick smart pods, so it deactivates the rank if someone with smart pods is playing. what this means is that experts pick smart pods too)

My vote indeed goes to: Ms. Pacman and Galaga

If they're a little more into games:
Super Puzzle Fighter 2X

If they're really young: Mr. driller

Forget about shoot 'em ups. They will not dig anything with shooting and violence except for Galaga.

thanks for the replies :D, but forget the "they are girls" thing, they are my age and not the stereotypical "girls hate violent/shooting etc" stuff, they'd be insulted if someone thought that of them.

Just trying to figure out a jamma vert game that will keep people interested.

Pretend I'm an arcade OP looking for a good money earner... lol, although I will be turning off continue if possible... so that there is some goal of trying to get through the game without free play credit feeding.

I've been going through mame and playing stuff, just wanted to see what other ideas people had instead of picking something that maybe only I would want to play. :)

may just be giving it too much thought..

Women, in my experience, girlfriends or otherwise, closest they come to liking a good game is a puzzle game or Samurai Shodown...thoe I guess I'm stereotyping, the same could be said for most men...

Yes, I was thinking lady friend or girlfriend too when recommending.

Another candidate is Rockman Power Battle (I might got this name wrong). There is two Rockman fighting games on the arcade, both are Mamerable so you can give them a try. They are both really fun and easy to play, but hard to 1CC.

Another shmup I would recommend is 19XX, easy at the beginning, very hard at the end, top-notch art style to keep the sophisticated happy.

Just don't give them any Psikyo or Cave stuff.

Jikyo Oshaberi Parodius and Sexy Parodius would be the best cute-em-up games since it's more silly "grown-up" fun than kiddy. Any other Parodius would do fine actually.

but of course, if you can find "House of the Death"... ah what am I thinking, if you have it keep it for yourself.

I must get back to work, hope the suggestions help.

moved the cab last night, they now have Sky Shark

they like it a lot, actually one of them used to play it on the c64 or something like that.
..then I just found out the other girl is an amazing tetris player (on nes), honestly have never seen somone play tetris so fast and perfect, she would get to level 20 each time with scores around 500,000 or something

Probably will swap out the game eventually, anyone know how to modify a coin slot to accept any coins? I can probably google it.. gonna use it as a piggy bank / house fund.
