Kickstarter: Leisure Suit Larry Remade/Remastered

Post by njiska »

It may not be as big as Double Fine, but I'm psyched to see this Kickstarter is happening. I've always loved the Larry games, but the latest ones have lost sight of what made the originals so good and so funny. These guys seem to be doing it right and have started by making the best decision ever; getting Al Lowe to come out of retirement. He's apparently fully involved with the project and for fans of Laffer this is just the best thing ever. If all goes well they plan on remaking 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 as well.

The only problem is they aren't getting the same kind of immediate love Double Fine did. Sure $186,000 is good money for a few days, but they're looking for $500,000 to make it happen. If you're a fan you should really check it out.

We really don't need another Larry 1 remake. Al Lowe being involved doesn't matter - no creative input is really required. Further, the Larry games were never really all that fantastic - though I have fond memories of small me and my dad and sister playing them together (he didn't give a fuck, yay dad).

As much as I like the old Leisure Suit Larry games I really can't see the necessity in having them remade. The games are steeped in late 80's/early 90's pop culture and it's a major part of their appeal. I don't really see them working in this day and age without sacrificing a lot of what made the originals so great. Not to mention those flash style graphics are awful. I'd rather just see the originals streamlined and released as a collection.

This.

Even the 1991 VGA remake of the first game with the dumbed-down interface had already sacrificed some of what made the blocky original great. As much as I like the original games (well, the first three at least), I can't see something worthwhile come out of the project except for hi-res boobs, which, frankly, are quite accessable outside a Larry game nowadays.

I want to see a remake of The Black Cauldron aka the best thing Al Lowe ever did. But of course that won't happen. Also, I'm lying and don't want to see a remake because it was fine the way it was.

The Double Fine kickstarter was crazy, they wanted $400,000 and got $3.3 Million.
That's not going to happen for Larry, obviously. I wonder if it'll even reach $500,000.
Maybe they should have set a slightly lower target and a longer timespan?
Well, 14 days to go and they are at $372,000, so it could still happen.

EDIT: It's at 390,000 now; ~18,000 in a single day. Chances rising!
I just noticed that amazingly, 3 people have actually pledged $5,000 USD, and one even $10,000...

You're a man after my own heart. I love the big guy and am happy to see him involved, even if it's only an advisory role.

And regardless of your opinon on the quality or need of a rerelease, by whole reason for supporting this is because it introduces a new generation of gamers to the real Larry and if it sells well we may finally get Lust in Space.

I think this video where Al answers several frequently asked questions (that came up here as well) is even more interesting:

This is good news. I can't wait to see what comes of it. Replay has already been working on the project, so hopefully it won't be too much longer until we start seeing some assets.
