Alright, just dropping by to claim that all shmups without visible hitboxes sucks. Heh.

I prefer for the hitbox to be visible, though i don't usually have problems with them being invisible provided that the hitboxes aren't weird. For a new game to come out without a visible hitbox would come off as weird to me since there is no reason not to have it visible unless some people somehow get's distracted by the thing or it breaks their immersion.

Ill rephase my last post. A non visable HB thats intuative is better than a visable HB that isnt. Skystage is the latter

Oh wow.

Do you actually think you're piloting a 2D ship dodging hordes of neon bullets, but then that awful glowing hitbox suddenly snaps you back into reality?

If the bullets coming right through you ship, doing no harm (my biggest issue with bullet hell games actually) don't break yours, why the visible hitbox would?
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

- The bullets doesn't hit anything on your plane, they pass over or under your wings! Really, i dunno. I don't get immersed when playing games. The closest I ever get is when I get in the mood to RP in an RPG game.

I'm sure I'm a retard for loads of other reasons like 'generally not playing for score', 'Only wanting to play bullethell games' and 'Liking Touhou'. Plenty to pick and choose from.

Then your hitbox would be a bullet magnet of sorts, changing the projectiles' altitude whenever they pass over or underneath it. Gotta wonder why your plane carries such a thing around.

in b4 someone mentions Akai Katana or Mars Matrix
Zengeku3 wrote:The bullets doesn't hit anything on your plane, they pass over or under your wings!
in b4 someone posts a Reimu drawing where she's heavily injured everywhere (not literally, though) except on her hitbox

about the topic, I don't like to have to memorize hitboxes for bullets and players, or more exactly, I'd like to have to memorize as least as possible, because whenever I depend on memorization, it fails me. Generally speaking, I'm not affected by absence of visible hitbox, but dislike when "simple" memorization of bullet/laser hitboxes seem to be more rewarding than your effort on calculating what movements to do (I call them "the danger of overestimating and underestimating bullet hitboxes", from my experience. Other people may have different experiences and opinions.).
Imagine a situation where, for example, you have a pattern with laser segments and bullets on the screen. Then, one day, you find it to be unexpectedly much easier than before. Did you really improve your execution for moving, dodging, your foresight ability and mental toughness? Or did you internalize the hitboxes well enough to have more precise data (through trial and error, most of the times) to work with? Most people would probably believe in the former.

about Raiden Fighters, I can't speak much, since I only use slaves, but you can notice how much the bullet is close to you by how much it sparkles while you scratch it, and if you want to graze it/them, you try to lead them as downwards as possible to not depend on precise horizontal movements.

about APB, I'd rather not try to graze for score on it, because the graze hitbox and the normal hitbox seem to not differ much (at least when I played a few times with Car-Pet against the first boss' slow shots)

From what I've read grazing isn't terribly important for scoring in Batrider compared to the other intricacies like destroying backgrounds stuff and milking bosses. The Slave in Raiden Fighters is IMO more difficult to graze with because the grazing hitbox shrinks just as much as the collision hitbox (obviously due to ship size). Ships with wide wings like the Ixion and Hell Diver are good for it but unless you're going for extremely high scoring it's not something I'd worry about.

Personally, I prefer it when the hitbox isn't marked with a golden ball or whatever, but is kinda suggested on the spirte.

For instance, in Espgaluda, the way the wings "frame" the hitbox. Or the way that Ketsui's ships have some detail that hints at the hitbox location. I find it more intuitive to dodge with setups like that than I do when there's some glowing orb saying "don't get hit here!".
i agree with this comment. i also feel that a fluid, intuitive movement makes for a more "immersed" experience as was suggested earlier. to me, that increases the level of enjoyment when navigating a section cleanly, unassisted so to speak. i think Guwange is a great example of an intuitive hotbox, made more difficult because the sprites are not really symmetrical as most ships are. good stuff

that said, i find nothing wrong with a visible hitbox. i think that they make for a more calculated, micromanaged dodge and games that have insane patterns are by nature designed to be as precisely technical as possible. making your way through a curtain sure as hell feels good too. although it isnt my prefered play style so to speak, these games find their way to the top of my list often because of aesthetic beauty and challenge.

whether you are sailing on the autobahn, dodging on instinct or running a rally race with pre-mapped precise path you still shit your pants when you make it out cleanly!!

thanks for reading a forum greenhorns post

Exactly. If your ship didn't carry it, it would be too easy. And no proper pilot would like that. :P

Alternatively, there's the theory that a friend has about Crimzon Clover, where the little glowing orb that marks the hitbox is the only functional part of the ship, and the rest of it was just added on by the pilot to look cool.

Whoosh. Was just doing a playful sikraikenism, didn't mean to be offensive.

Still, I have to say that your post was quite dumb, or at least poorly worded. Saying that a shooter needs hitboxes now to be worth playing is like saying that fighting games should have visible hitboxes by default to be worth playing. Just play the game for like 30 minutes tops and you'll get accustomed to the ship hitbox.

RebRank made their hitboxes easy to identify. More games should consider using the cockpit as the actual hitbox rather than the center of the ship.
