Galuda II does the same thing. Hitbox is only visible when pressing the laser.

The flying orb part reminds me off some shitty indie hipster game for some reason.

Oh, that one about the seven stages of grief or whatever? Hahaha, yeah that was funny.

I have nothing against large hitboxes or invisible ones - considering my playstyle, it's rare that I need to make tiny little dodges and really need to rely on that extra bit of precision. I can see how it would help an extreme danmaku game like Futari but mostly visible hitboxes are unnecessary IMO.

Hitbox tilt, though, that's some dumb shit and it's actually a real thing in Dragon Blaze. I want to punch all of Team Psikyo in the face for that sometime...

If you mean that the hitbox moves/changes size during ship rotation, most of Raizing's shmups do that too. I'd wager a bunch of others do too.

You spoiled crybabies. I played dozens of shmups (often with 1CC results) with invisible hitboxes growing up in the 80's. IMHO, the only game really needing one is Progear due to so many reasons I shouldn't ever have to justify them. Go play some Twin Cobra.

QFT (though I disagree with the Progear thing, I have no problem identifying my hitbox there)

I don't remember anyone crying about hitboxes, up until now we were just having a slightly heated discussion.

The "back in my day" thing was really funny though, 10/10.

Of course most shmups from the 80's had the full ship as the hitbox, so technically they all had visible hitboxes didn't they? But hey, nevermind!

I much prefer invisible hitboxes. Sure it might take a while to learn exactly where it is but it feels good when you figure it out. And aesthetics etc. etc.

The hardest game for me as far as hitbox awareness is Crimzon Clover. And it's visible in that game. I guess it's just the odd shape of the ship.

Im fine with ships having an invisable HB, but for flying people I like to have it visable.
I bought KoF SkyStage last week and that has really off-putting locations for the hitboxes, Instead of the chest / neck area like espgaluda and others, most are dead center of the sprite.

Ild say KoF SS has the worst HBs ive ever played, barre maybe a few older shmups that have hitboxes larger than the sprite

Loving the hilarious elitism.

You assume I have no idea what I'm doing, which I find absolutely hilarious. Would you like to tell everyone else in this thread who agreed with me to learn2play as well? Also, congratulations on using a phrase often used by 14 year olds playing World of Warcraft. Shows how mature you are.

I'm pretty sure the average age of this forum is far younger then 14, or atleast they don't give me any indication otherise.

Christ this thread is god-awful, why are you people giving Illyrian so much attention when he is just as big a shitposter as DTP and Gus? I'd like to keep them on my blacklist, but you guys just keep throwing their filthy quotes all over my screen!

No I didn't, I really enjoy Batrider, Raiden fighters 2, Garegga and Strikers 1999. I've also 1cc'd 2 of those 4 games (the first 2) and actually love me some dodonpachi/DOJ/Ketsui as well. I just said I much prefer shmups with a visible hitbox.
I'm actually not a scrub and I don't think you know what that word means.
"learn2play" is a phrase most commonly used by elitist pricks.

Try again. Or alternatively, just quote any part of my posts in this thread where I say shmups are unplayable with an invisible hitbox. I think the worst I've said is that it makes dodging less precise. It does.

Edit: Nice 4chan style of posting there btw

Go play some Twin Cobra.
And the Genesis version of that game has two hitboxes.

Enemy shots will take out the player's helicopter if the shot hits any of the square section of the helicopter which is actually kind of a visible hitbox; however, shots can pass through the tail section. Enemy helicopters, on the other hand, can ram any part of the player helicopter including the tail section.

You clearly said it was a challenge you shouldn't have to deal with which is far worse than an inaccurate statement about precision . To repeat again it only makes dodging less precise if you the player dont have the skillset to navigate so require the visible hitbox . Enough of this though im with chainsaw you are king shit poster id say worse than DTP .

You also appear to be putting words in my mouth. I never said I "require" a visible hitbox. I said games are better with them. What's with all the rage anyway? Some of you guys sure get angry over people with different opinions than you!

None of the best shooters have visible hitboxes, and you learn where they are pretty quickly anyway unless you're dumb.
They're kinda nice if you're new I guess, but they're not important or anything.

Personally, I like to be able to see clearly exactly where I'm vulnerable, if that makes me a scrub so be it *shrug*, some folk sure get angry over pretty much nothing around here it seems.

A hitbox display is a convenience, not a necessity. I'm sure you understand that perfectly fine. Hell, you don't even need one for danmaku games, among a drastically shrunken down one, since it's already been done before just fine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1c6uYgWrLDM

If I were designing a shoot-em-up, I would have invisible hitboxes, but they would be displayed on the ship select screen so people knew what they were dealing with. I'd also try to make the hitboxes seem natural on the sprite, like cockpit or airplane body, but not wings. Etc. Might also display them on a lower difficulty mode to ease in new players.

Regardless, invisible hitboxes are fine. You'll learn their locations if you play a game enough to be good at it.

Ya know, given all the shmups that get made starring flying anime loli girls-I'm amzed that none of the developers have made panties as your hitbox location yet. :P

As far as hitboxes go, as long as it doesn't extend outside of the ship sprite, it's fine by me.

My preferances:

Guwange, Blazing Lasers, Thunderforce III/V, Bari-Arm, Keiko Flying Squadron, Gunbird 2, Zen-Itchi, Crimson Clover.
