Gunbird PCB behaving strangely. Any tips?

Post by burgerkingdiamond »

My Gunbird PCB won't play on one of my cabs, but it will on the other. On the working one the screen will look all fucked up for a second and then the game boots up and plays fine (don't know if that's normal).

On the other one I turn it on and there's a chime (I think it's the normal sound effect for turning on the game) but nothing happens from there and the monitor just says "no signal".

The weird thing is that I tested several other PCB's on that cab and they all work fine. I even tried my Strikers 1945 which looks pretty much like identical hardware to Gunbird.

Anybody know what could be going on?

Nothing really helpful, but I don't think the messed up graphics are normal.

When I boot Gunbird, the first thing I hear is "Marion Ha Chi", or something like that.

Hopefully someone else can be more helpful.

did you compare the voltmeter reading of the +5V pin for both cabs on the PCB itself to see if they are the same ? if the non working one is right on the edge then it could explain why it's not booting up. some PCBs requires more than others.

the working cab had 5.6V under load with Gunbird in.

I put the PCB in the non-working cab and adjusted the voltage to 5.6 (it was at about 5.37V) and nothing still...

That's way too high!!! 5.1 is good for most older games, but 5.6 is killing games, left and right.

can you compare the female jamma connector wiring between the two cabs and spot any differences ? i.e. pins that are wired in on the working cab that are not on the other cab.

yeah man, I knew 5.6V was high. All my boards always worked fine though so I never thought to even check it. I'm going to adjust it down to 5.1V

I still don't know what's up with Gunbird though. I don't see any obvious differences between the two harnesses.

Many PCBs do this, normal.

What kind of monitor is this? Is it a Wei ya tri-sync? If so, then there are some PCBs it just won't work with because of strange sync signal.

Have you tried MVS games on this cab with the digital monitor?

Dave K.
It's a Wells Gardner D9200 which is a tri-sync monitor.

I haven't tried any MVS games on it yet, but I'm actually planning on building a dedicated NEO GEO cab running a 4-slot using this monitor. The 4-slot is in the mail right now as a matter of fact..
Why do you ask?

In the end it won't really matter to me if I can get Gunbird running on this monitor because it'll be set up horizontal for NEO GEO stuff. I just thought it was odd.

I've had problems with some of my PCB's sync'ing on tri-sync monitors at 15khz before. Haven't tried a D9200 so not sure about that one.

well Goddamn. I'm going to be in some trouble if my NEO GEO board won't sync with this monitor... I'll have to wait and see though.
