RGB NES power problem

Post by Zapf »

I bought some new ac adapters from retrogamecave for my systems, and was having problems with using the nes one with my RGB modded nes. Using the new ones, video ranged from very spotty, with video dropping constantly and never staying locked long enough for the audio to come through on my xrgb mini, and no video output at all. Going back to an old NES adapter or sega genesis one seemed to solve the problem. I tested the retrogamecave nes ac adapter on my other, unmodded NES, and it worked great.

The only difference between the new and old ones are the amperage - the retrogamecave NES ac adapter outputs 9v 2a, while the older one is 9v and 1.3a. Would that be something that could affect the video output? I'm not sure what amplifier is being used in mine - it was made by acem77 a while back.

Higher amperage should not be a problem, as long as the voltage is correct.
Even then, the NES has an internal voltage regulator that converts the incoming voltage anyway.

My guess would be that the higher amperage provides a stronger sync signal,
which the Mini is having trouble locking onto. Maybe try adding some resistance to the sync line
or feeding it thru a sync cleaner.

It actually is being fed through an lm1881, believe it or not. I figured it was sync related, though all my stuff goes through retro_access's xrgb mini sync booster adapter before entering the xrgb mini. Maybe its still boosted too much?
